The Mercurian Legacy - 56.03.27

NEW MARTIAN REPUBLIC SPACEFLIGHT ACADEMY - CADET NO. 49793

LAST UPDATED 56.03.27

NAME: Sam Jovian

AGE: 17

SEX: M

STATUS: Assigned to Apprenticeship with the Martian Mining Corporation

OFFICER’S NOTES:

Sam has proved himself to be a highly alert and quick thinking cadet. Should his first years of apprenticeship go smoothly, I would recommend that upon conscription he is transferred to Scouts Fleet as soon as possible.

It is here that I would also like to note some reservations I have about this cadet, however they in no way invalidate the claims made in my opening statement.

Sam has been noted to lack a particular level of rationality when it comes to executing his spontaneously conceived plans. Whether this is due to bravery or stupidity, I cannot discern. I think the most prominent example of this trait of his, would be his (now infamous within the academy) encounter with a Wraith construct during a patrol exercise on 56.01.16.

Having narrowly survived a shot to his training vessel from the construct’s particle beam, Sam almost immediately began working on his counter. While, the Wraith fought with the other cadets present on the mission, Sam was tearing away at various maintenance panels in his ship, attempting to route power directly from the ship’s reactor to its primary coilgun.

Of course, according to the specifications of the training vessels — such a modification should have made little difference to the output of the cannon. Despite this, Cadet Jovian remained undeterred, and upon the firing of the weapon (which was done with impressive accuracy) was able to pierce the enemy’s armour and temporarily immobilise it.

Sam’s actions during this attack allowed for himself and the remaining cadets to retreat safely while N.M.R forces moved in to neutralise the enemy, and for this he has been commended greatly. Even so, it should be noted that this shining example of the Cadet’s intuition has not proved itself to be the norm, and several times during past missions such plans of his have failed.

During a mock-up retreat mission, Sam attempted to eject his supplies and shoot at them using his vessel’s guns to create a dust field that would force the enemy pursuers to adjust their trajectories and subsequently slow down. This did not have the intended effect, and instead the few particles that were created by Sam’s impromptu dust bomb were too small to make any deterrence against the pursuers ship’s, but large enough to disrupt Sam’s own sensor arrays and hindered his situational awareness during the rest of the mission.

In another instance, Sam thought it a clever idea to use his ship’s torch drive to make an “emergency rapid approach” to a space station during a combat docking exercise. The stupidity of this need not be elaborated upon, and the drive’s plume had already eviscerated several docking clamps before Sam too realised this and promptly aborted the manoeuvre.

All in all, despite his unusual flaws, Cadet Jovian presents great potential as a spacefarer of the N.M.R. I would consider him for assignments on the more volatile side (such as deep-belt mining or helium-sifting) where those with traits like his own tend to thrive.
