Chapter 8: Ecosystem

Chapter 8: Ecosystem

...I think I will hold on doing what I was just about to do, just for a few more years. This will increase the chance of the ecosystem not collapsing after I create the thing. An ecological collapse will take hundreds of CE and millions of years to re-stabilize, a time I don't want to waste.

Speaking of the ecosystem, there is something about this ecosystem that is extremely unique and interesting. And that is the division between the two sides of the planet.

The Great Divider mountain range acts as a natural wall separating the old Day and Night sides of the planet. Each side now has a completely unique ecosystem to each other. 99.7% of animal species that live on the Day side of the planet aren't on the Nightside, and vice versa. The .3% of animal species that are similar to each other either occurred by coincidence or when the wind carried a single-cell organism over the Great Divider mountain range.

Most of these animals bare similarities to those from Earth but are different in some way be it their surface appearance or genetics. Some similar animals were praying mantis with fists used for throwing bullet-fast punches, birds with four legs enabling them to run fast while on land, species of Pigs with feather wings that allow them to fly, bats with four pairs of wings, and two-headed snakes. There was even a strange species of large foxes made of stones. Mammals with scales and many more different animals.

Some animals had much more differences than just new sets of limbs or organs, like the animal I named Snaib'hemahl. Pronounced Snai-b-he-mahl.

They are massive dinosaur-sized snails with 19 pairs of legs and long, large, robust snail shells. Some of these snails only had four legs and had a structure similar to that of gigantic turtles. Some had only two legs, while others had no legs.

The Snaib'hemahl are unique to the old Night side of the planet, being one of the few omnivores there.

There is a species of massive electric eels that live in the dark depths of the ocean. They have eyes that glow bright blue, with the inside of their mouth and long, forked tongue also having this bluish glow. It's no surprise these fish are able to generate an electrical discharge, and they are the champions of this, producing up to 10,000 volts.

In water, that amount would kill any animal. These Electric Whales are native to saltwater in the old Day side and are carnivores.

Then some animals were completely unique, looking nothing like animals from Earth and some where impossible to describe with words. There was even an eldritch abomination living at the bottom of the sea.

The uniqueness doesn’t only stop at different species but also how they feed. On the day side, 79% of animals are carnivores, 18% are herbivores, and 3% are omnivores. On the night side, 89% are herbivores, 9 % are carnivores, and 2% are omnivores.

Because of this high amount of carnivores on the old Day side, most of the animals there have huge reproductive capabilities and short gestation periods. They also grow and reach adulthood fast, but most of them die to other carnivores. Herbivores are, on average, more intelligent than carnivores and omnivores. They had to evolve more intelligence to survive being eaten by their neighbors.

The most common landforms on this side of the planet are mountains, plains, valleys, and deserts. There were other landforms such as forests, but these four were the most prevalent. This is different from the old Nightside, which was mostly filled with trees and massive grasslands.

Due to the massive demand for trees on the night side, plants, grass, and fungi from this side of the planet grow at a remarkably fast pace. A maple tree can grow in only three years, but they also get eaten quickly because of the high amount of herbivores, keeping it balanced.

It was amazing to see a planet with two distinct ecosystems and landforms. It's like two different planets, one completely foreign to the other.

Well, I am not complaining. "I think I have waited long enough." It is time to do the thing I had put on hold, and that is bringing my two pets into the ecosystem.

Yep. Those two first creatures were still alive.

They are now 2.5 billion years old (rounded), with the worm having 2.2 billion more years and the dragon having 2 billion more years. "They are truly the ancient kings of this world."

At this time, they haven't changed much. Well, they have definitely changed, but they stayed in the same place. One is still in the planet's mantle, eating and shitting lava, with the other living at the top of the Great Divider mountain range, eating and shitting stones.

I appeared at the top of the Great Divider mountain range, staring at the scene before me. There was no light up here due to the massive ring blocking sunlight from touching it. However, if there were light, one would see that this place is made from multiple massive, dry interconnected mountains.

There is no ice or snow up here like at the top of normal mountains. This is because outer space on this planet began at 150 km, and the average peak of this mountain range was now 197 km, 47 km over. "No one's crossing the mountain." Until a race reaches the level of evolution to survive in space, it will never cross. "Of if a race developing technology that allows them to transverse over the mountain than that."

It is common for whole asteroids to crash into the mountain range because they haven't reached the part of the mountain where it starts to burn up. Just walking here would put you at a huge risk of being hit by huge or small asteroids from space. That is one of the main reasons the average height of the mountain range keeps increasing so quickly.

As I looked away from the mountain, I could see clouds covering the surface of the planet, one of the two continents of the old Day side of the planet, the stunning blue ocean, and the curving edge of the planet's surface. Due to the high elevation, I have a bird's eye view of half of my planet. Looking further away, one could see a bright ball of light known as my star.

It was a magnificent view that no one could enjoy, "and the one that was supposed to enjoy this spent most of its time eating and sleeping."

I turned to the 1.9-mile-long dragon, which I now decided to call Défteros, literally meaning second in Greek, lying on the ground, sleeping.

That’s right.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

This lizard that was once 4 meters long had become a massive, 1.9 miles long, 200 billion pounds traditional western dragon. This was after years of constant eating, sleeping, growing, and evolving. Défteros is so massive that if it had eyes its eyeball can seem like an island to a human-sized creature standing on it. Too bad it did have eyes, since it never once needed to see due to its strong echolocation.

It has massive, jet-black armored scales, which are harder than diamonds. Its underbelly was also black but a lighter shade. It has a narrow face with two long and twisted main horns that are surrounded by multiple smaller horns, and a long neck. Its massive, leathery, bat-like wings were black and have a wingspan of 3.1 miles wide when fully extended, with shiny silver scales scattered across the underside like the stars of a night sky, forming different patterns similar to constellations in the clear night sky. It has large spicks running down its spine and down its long muscular tail. Because of its color, it is impossible to be seen if up here without night vision.

Défteros is a handsome and majestic dragon.

Too bad this big space lizard was so stupid. Its brain's only function was to wake it up, tell it when to eat, and when it was full. This was followed by where to sleep comfortably, where to shit its rocks, and how to move. It has a really small, simple brain compared to its size.

It doesn’t even know how to run while on foot or how to fight. It never had competition since it was born, so it never had to fight for anything. Though, I doubt it would lose to any other creatures just because of its sheer size and weight. "Oh, and for comparison, this dragon would weigh 2.75 trillion pounds, or 1.375 billion tons, if it were on Earth."

Since this planet has 13.75 times more gravity than Earth, all you have to do to find out what something will weigh on Earth is multiply its weight by 13.75.

"Ok, back to the topic." I am planning on bringing it into the ecosystem. And no. I was not planning on sending Défteros down from the mountain range to destroy the ecosystem. Hell no. "That would be stupid."

I am planning to take some of their genes and make them a descendant. Yes, I have memories of their genetic makeup and could recreate an exact copy of them if I had enough CE. However, I wanted to take it from the source.

Using a small amount of CE, which is any CE less than 0.00001, I extracted some of its blood and put it in a glass flask. A glass flask now floated beside me containing a slick golden liquid. "Now, on to the firstborn, Próta."

I instantly appeared inside the planet's crust. There were bright orange magma flows of over 4,000°C all around me. In front of me was a massive behemoth floating motionless in the magma.

It was Próta, the first creature on this planet.

It has an elongated, tubelike body and is a whopping 3.1 miles long, 300 meters in diameter, and weighs 120 billion pounds. Its body is covered in large, shiny obsidian black scales that overlap and interlock to form armor, having lost the magma flowing through its scales. These scales are harder than diamond due to the constant pressure exserted on it while it is in the planet crust.

There is a circular wide openings on one end of it, which acts as its mouth. This opening is half as wide as its body and it never closes. This hole leads straight to its stomach and if one was to look inside its mouth, it will seem like they are staring into a deep hole dug in the ground that soon becomes a black void because it's too deep.

The positioning of its mouth and since it is always open allows magma to keep flowing in, even when it is sleeping. When it's full, the path that led to its stomach would close up. This path would open once more when it hungry, and its stomach would act like a vacuum and suck in all the magma around, so Próta never have to wake up to eat. Like Défteros, it has no eyes because it never needed to see. It also doesn't even have any nose or ears as it never needed to smell or hear. The other end of its body is flat.

Using a small amount of CE, I took some of its blood and placed it in a CE that could handle the blood's heat. Like the lava it lives in, its blood was a substance very similar to lava and was 3,500°C. With the two flasks at hand, I teleported to a forest in the old Night side to begin my new creation. I made six more flasks appear and split the blood of the two ancient creatures each into four flasks. This means I have four flasks containing Próta's blood and another four containing Défteros' blood.

I turned my attention to one of the flasks that contained Próta's blood, brought up the genetic template of the blood, and started adjusting it. First, the thing that is making the Ancient creatures so expensive to make is their maximum lifespan, which is in the billions.

So, I reduced the maximum age from 4.7 billion years to somewhere around 800. I say somewhere above 800 because I did not put a fixed limit on their age but just made it so that they become old at 800 years.

The next thing is length. 2.5 billion years ago, I made Próta grow 3.3 nanometers each day, even though it didn't eat. That is small, but over billions of years, that 3.3 nanometer adds up. But this creature wouldn't have that long, so I changed it so that they would grow an average of 0.5 meters every year till they die.

I then made the form of the animal be a centipede instead of the worm Próta is. I reduced the durability of its scales, changed its size, and changed other things like what it eats. I gave it multiple characteristics and reduced its intelligence to be simply controlled by instinct.

I did the same thing for one of the other flasks containing Próta's blood but changed its gender to female and made the change to differentiate it from males. I made the female gestation period long and limited their ability to lay eggs to a maximum of 4 in their lifetime. One must be male, one must be female, and the last two are determined by the father's sperm.

I did the same thing with the two remaining flasks. Rather than make them in the form of massive centipedes, I made them have the form of massive anacondas and implemented the changes to make them completely different from centipedes. I also made them carnivores. Unlike the centipedes which I made herbivores.

With the four flasks containing Próta's blood changed, two containing a male and a female of the Giga-Centipedes race and two others containing a male and female of the Giga-Snake race done, I moved on to one of the flasks containing Défteros' blood.

This one was easy because I wanted to make a dragon race. Yes, Défteros is a dragon, but it is like a dragon god, and I wanted to design mortal dragons. Like before, I changed the age, making them get old when they reach 800.

I then lowered the dragon's strength and size then made them keep growing in size and getting stronger as it grew older. Additionally, I made its scales weaker and changed their color to platinum. I also gave this dragon an organ that allows it to breathe fire and ice. Though for the platinum dragons, I made their fire breath attack naturally stronger than their ice.

Using another flask, I created a female version of the male platinum, changing some things to make males and females differ from each other. I made it so that the first female dragon would lay five eggs after her first mating. Of these five eggs, three will be girls, and two will be boys.

After the first female dragon, the other females can now lay up to six eggs during their lifetime, with the gender determined by the sperm.

Then I created another pair of male and female dragons and made their scales pure white like freshly fallen snow. They also had fire and ice breath attacks, but the ice breath attack was stronger.

Both types of dragons are similar, like exact copies of one another. "Because it is." The only difference between them is the color of their scales and which breath attack that is naturally stronger. Both dragons are omnivores, and I made them highly intelligent animals, the smartest on the planet and more than humans.

There was to be the first sentient race on this planet.

With these eight original races created, Giga-Centipedes, Giga-Snake, Platinum Dragons, and White Dragons, it was time to put them in their habitat.

The first two were simple. I made the Giga-Centipedes to be native to the old Day side since this side had few herbivores. To trim down the population on the old Night Side, I made the Giga-Snakes as they will be big-eating predators. Though there is ecological stability, I could see huge overpopulation coming, which needs to be stopped, or it will cause the ecosystem to collapse.

Using 287 CE, I created four eggs, two for the male and female Giga-Centipedes, and the other two for the Giga-Snake. I then dropped the two Giga-Centipedes eggs inside the largest forest on the old Day side in the area with the highest chance of them reaching adulthood and mating, a forest that spanned almost the entirety of one of the two continents.

This forest is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, with the highest level of biodiversity, and is crisscrossed by thousands of rivers and lakes. I needed to reduce its size because it was absorbing too many greenhouse gases and turning this planet cold.

I mean. The planet's surface temperature is now 300°C because of the forest. That's a big change.

I then dropped the two Giga-Snake eggs in the second-largest forest in the world. It is a temperate coniferous forest located on the old Cold Side, and it is the largest area with overpopulation. Even if there are so many animals, carnivores are finding it extremely difficult to hunt there because they get jumped.

Yeah. On this side of the planet, carnivores are getting jumped AND killed by herbivores.

I once saw a Giganotosaurus-like dinosaur mutilated by multiple Triceratops because it was trying to eat a Saltasaurus. It is not something new and unique. Once a carnivore is found in the forest, it will be jumped and killed by any and all herbivores in the area. Then, its body will be left to be used as fertilizer for the trees.

This is why carnivores are only 9% because they are killed to extinction by herbivores and omnivores. This is another reason carnivores are smatter on average in the old Nightside, as they need to be intelligent to know when to kill to eat.

With the first two done, I moved on to the dragons. I created dragons and made them omnivores so they could take care of the population on the planet, keeping them from getting too big. For some reason, most of the animals and plant on my planet are capable of rapid reproduction.

Additionally, they are designed to prevent Giga-Centipedes and Giga-Snake populations from growing out of control. I made the average adult dragon 40 meters in length and 17 meters when standing on four of their feet. While it is much smaller than those two Giga animals, their intelligence and breath attack would compensate for the difference.

I used 298 CE to turn those four flasks into four eggs and dropped the two eggs containing the Platinum Dragons somewhere on the old Day side of the planet with the highest chance of them reaching adulthood and mating, doing the same for the eggs containing White Dragons but on the old Nightside.

With this huge change to the ecosystem of the planet, I sat back and watched.
