Chapter 13: New World

Chapter 13: New World

That was... surprising. It truly amazes me how the Giga-Centipedes fight because I didn't force them to fight or ever think they would respond that way. I thought they would fight as normal centipedes do by catching a foe with their jaw and injecting a venomous bite.

But they had incorporated their innate digging ability into their fighting style, and a devastating fighting style it became. The Tyrannosaurus Rex they bullied was one of the most powerful carnivores on the planet. Well, on land. She would be like a herbivore in the sky and in the water, but that's beside the point.

Her speed, agility, strength, senses, endurance, regeneration, and intelligence were all at the peak of her race. Had she reached her prime at 30 and produced offspring with a strong male T. Rex, their descendants could have been a force to be reckoned with on the planet.

"Who knows?" They might have evolved to become earth-bound dragons. "Hmm..." I have enough CE remaining after doing that thing I wanted to do with the dragons, so why don't I give her a small push? Give her some of those dragon blood. I mean, I can't just let such a gold mine die. I would be stupid if I let that happen.

While that happens, let's return to the old night side. The sun has risen in the sky, signaling the start of a new day. The smallest continent in the world sits close to this planet's south pole, a place known for being one of the coldest places in the world.

On this continent live the white dragons. The bright sunlight beams down on the expanse of frozen tundra, the white snow shining brightly.

The male white dragon lay on the snowy ground at the taiga outskirt, camouflaging completely with the snow, as he silently watched as his companion chased an ermine sprinting with all its might. She could catch it at any time but wanted to play with it, so she slowly flew after it as it ran for its dear life.

She had kept the promise she made to herself, and in just one night, she had managed to make the once fearless ermines terrified of her. But they weren't scared of the male dragon at all.

"I think it is time." He finally spoke as the female dragon snatched the small ermine with her claw.

She held the little creature in her claws and lightly squished it, crushing the ermine. "Time for what?" she asked, turning to him.

"The food here is diminishing, and we are growing in size by the day. If we stay here any longer, we will have nothing to eat." He continued, sitting up from his lying position. "I think we should leave this place and build a new den in an area with more food."

"It is just fine here." She replied, tossing the dead body of the ermine away and wiping her now bloody talon, filled with the inside of the little creature, on the snow. "The trees are still plenty, and we still have the white beast. If they die out, then we move."

"You don't understand." He sighed, looking at the horizon. "It wouldn't be wise to kill them all. I know you can feel it too. The planet is telling us to leave this area before we cause more damage to the ecosystem..." He paused, "Whatever that word means." He finished his sentence, turning to her, squinting. "You do feel it, right?"

"I feel it, but I don't want to leave. This place is our den. Where we first appeared, and now we rule over this place." She chuckled, standing tall. "I mean, there is nothing here to bother us. What if we leave and go out there to see a beast bigger than us? Stronger? More..." She paused, looking at the dead ermine. "Intelligent?" She looked back at her male companion. "Just like when we were smaller. Anything could kill us. What if we leave this den and enter a place where we become the food?"

It was a deep question that caused the male dragon to think. After a while, he said, "Then we return." It was a short answer but straight to the point. Even he didn't want to return to the times when all the beasts here could kill and eat him.

"We can also find more of us." He added. "We can't be the only ones in this world. All the other beasts are numerous, so it is likely there are many of us as well. Wouldn't that be great?"

"Well, I am perfectly fine with just the two of us." She shrugs, staring at him. "Having more of us will make food more difficult to get, something that is already challenging."

The male dragon was silent for a while before speaking in an authoritative tone. "So you are planning on staying?"

"Yes." She replied. "If you really want to leave, you can. If you find something interesting out there, you can always return to tell me. Though I doubt I will be missing anything." She mumbled the last part.

"Well, you will have this entire den to yourself." He smiled, not planning on forcing her to come with him.

She didn't reply to his laugh and opened her wings, and with a big flap, she shot into the sky, heading towards the taiga. He watched her go, a light chuckle escaping his mouth.

'Well, time to venture into the white world.' He thought, staring at the horizon where the whiteness of snow expanded into.

Spreading his wings, he took off into the sky and shot forward with a sonic boom that parted the clouds, heading in the opposite direction of the taiga.

In the taiga, the female white dragon watched him disappear into the horizon, shrugging. "He will be back." She said, sure of herself, and flew into the forest to find something to eat.

As for the male dragon, he kept flying through the sky like a comet with sonic booms following behind him, having to squint his eyes almost shot. Unlike the Platinum dragons, the White dragons don't have nictitating membranes to protect their eyes while in flight from wind and debris.

Anywhere he looked, he saw white snow. There were no trees, sometimes one or two every few miles, and the further he flew from the taiga, the fewer beasts he saw. After two hours of non-stop flying at Mach 1.5, he reduced his travel speed to 650 km/h to conserve energy because he had the feeling he would be traveling for a long time, reducing

And he was right. He flew for almost an entire day, and yet he couldn't see an end to this vastness of whiteness. As if the entire world was like this. Now, there was no hint of beasts or even trees. He was starting to doubt there was anything out there, wondering if it was smart for him to leave his den.

He stopped flying for the first time and turned to look behind him. White. White. White. Everywhere he looked. No matter how hard he strained his eyes. How far he saw. All there was around him was white. He was in the middle of nowhere.

He was lost.

"Well, this is a problem." He looked at the orange sky and then at the horizon where the sun was sinking, disappearing. "I should keep moving forward. Who knows? I might find where the sun disappears into." Stealing his nerves, he flapped his wings and continued flying, chasing the sun.

The sun finally sank down and hid at the end of the world, with stars now littering the dark sky and the planet ring shining brightly. Yet, there was no end in sight to this endless white landscape.

But he kept flying towards the direction he remembered the sun being, trying his best not to turn left or right, or he might end up traveling in a circle. "Or even returning to my old den." He chuckled. That was the best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is that he would be lost in this landscape and die from hunger.

The thought made him shiver, and he immediately increased his speed to his maximum, not caring about conserving his energy any longer. The ground and sky became a blur for him, and his speed kept increasing by the second.

After a while of moving at this speed, he started to notice a difference. The temperature was increasing, becoming less cold, and he saw the landscape gradually changing. The white blanket on the ground gradually disappeared, with other substances he recognized from his inherited memory as stones and sand slowly taking their place. Then he saw it.

Soon, he saw something he had never seen before.

It was an expanse of brown grass stretching as far as his eyes could see. They were all as tall as 3 feet, hiding any small animals that were below. But for the dragon, the animals' presence was as clear as day due to their scent.

While flying, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, basking in the scent of the new world. It was the first time he smelled such a multitude of scents because back in the tundra, most of the scents in the tundra were masked by snow. There, it was impossible to smell something too far away, but now, he could detect the scent of a delicious beast that was many kilometers away.

"This is the land the world was telling us to come to..." He mumbled as he stopped flying, staring into the distance. "It is beautiful." First, the land of complete white. Now a land filled with grass. He couldn't imagine what he would discover next if he kept chasing the sun.

"If only she were here to see this." He mumbled a heavy sigh, turning to face the south, where his old den and companion were.

Even if he squinted to see as far as 10 km, he could only see the beginning of the white land. It was far behind him now, and a journey back to his old den would be dangerous, especially in the frozen tundra where one might get lost due to everything looking the same.

"I will go back to her someday." He mumbled, and with a heavy heart, he turned his back on where he came from and shot forward through the sky, following the scent of the animal he smelled. 'Time to taste the food of this new world.'

The scent kept getting stronger, meaning he was getting closer to his prey, so he bent sideways in the air, lowering his altitude. He landed softly on the ground and began walking towards the target, placing his rear foot where his front foot previously was, like a stalking feline predator, moving through the grass in almost complete silence.

Soon, he could see the source of the scent 500 meters away, which caused him to freeze. His eyes narrowed as he stared at the beast, blinking multiple times to see if he was dreaming. "Tree-horned beast?"

The animal he was looking at looked similar to the reindeer from the frozen tundra but almost two times larger, standing about 5 meters tall and 3 meters long. Their body was sturdy and filled with meat, with smaller antlers than the elk in the tundra and shorter fur, which was brown with a reddish hue.

"Why are they so... big?" He asked himself as he watched the reindeer graze on the grass. "And it smells good?" Those animals smelled as bad as they tasted, so he didn't understand what was happening.

He focused on its scent, filtering all the other scents in the surroundings to confirm he had followed the right one. "...It belongs to it...?" Proving himself right made him even more confused, but he decided to see how it tasted. The new world was already surprising, so maybe this would be different.

He flapped his wings and flew off the ground before shooting forward while remaining close to the grass. He flew through the air like an arrow shot from a bow, crossing the 500 meters between them in no time.

Sensing something, the reindeer raised its head and turned to him, but it was too late. He shot past the reindeer, using his blade-like talon to cut open its neck as he did. Changing his direction, he flew up into the air, flying in place and looking down at the grassland.

He watched the reindeer fall down, blood rushing from its neck like a fountain, but he didn't go down immediately. Raising his talon, he took a whiff of the reindeer's blood, his eyes narrowing.

The blood smelled nothing like the ones back in his old den. No, it smelled like a whole new animal with no similarity whatsoever. "Maybe it is a different beast?" Wanting to check, he leaked some of its blood with his forked tongue, mumbling. "This is not the same animal." It tasted completely different.

This one tastes good. Even better than his primary source of food back in the tundra.

Wanting more, he descended to the ground, landing softly beside the dead animal. Leaning forward, he began eating the reindeer. He didn't know how, but he soon finished eating the beast.

He raised his head, looking down at the empty spot where the reindeer once lived. Only blood and some pieces of flesh littered the ground, with everything else devoured. He couldn't believe it. Something that once tasted horrible had become the one of the best food he had ever eaten.

It even forced him to eat its head, a body part he never enjoyed eating.

"This new world is something else." He mumbled to himself, feeling a bit ashamed of himself for eating the head of the animal. Shaking his head, he pushed the thought away and decided to eat more since he was still hungry.

Taking flight, he began looking for more of these reindeer. In no time, he found two more reindeer walking through the grassland. Wasting no time, he swooped down, opening his mouth and biting down on the neck of one of the reindeer, the force of his bite snapping its neck and killing it instantly.

The other one tried to run, but he swung his tail at the reindeer, his tail slicing through the air with a crack and smashing the reindeer's skull, killing it. It dropped down, dead, and he released the one he held in his mouth, looking down at his two kills.

"She really is missing out..." He mumbled, sighing. "I hope she chases the sun like I do."

He pushed the thought away and quickly finished the two reindeer, finally filling his empty stomach from the long journey. With that done, he stretched his body, moaning in satisfaction.

He walked away from the tattered remains of the reindeer on the ground, cleaning his bloody snout and talons on the grass as he did. After walking for a few minutes, he found a suitable spot and lay down, preparing to sleep in the open like he always does. After all, there was nothing that could hurt him in this area. Letting out a yawn, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
