EERIE FATE
Chapter 2

Chapter 2

My name is Beth, and I'm twenty one years old. I'm a sorceress, I perform exorcism for a living, casting out demons, removing curses, the list goes on. I do all that for a fee. No matter the place I'll always be there for a fee. This has been my life for five years, made some friends and enemies here and there. I'm basically an outcast, got disowned by the organization that raised me. That's something I don't want to dwell on.

“Can you get off my bed?” Essie's voice brought me back to reality. She's my friend, the closest thing I have to a best friend, I'm not sure the same can be said for her about me. She's a welder of magic just like me.

“Ugh, the bed is so soft.” A blunt force knocked me out of the bed. My ribs ached, I just remembered, I haven't healed them but I don't have the energy.

“I have healed your injuries. You're just imagining those pains right now.” She spoke like someone who can read my thoughts. Yes Essie is able to read thoughts, that's one of her specialities.

“That's where you'll sleep today.” She said in a cold tone. Essie lives lavishly, she's a rich woman. We are currently in her apartment which houses five rooms, a rooftop swimming pool, and an underground swimming pool. tennis court, her kitchen alone is bigger than my entire room. She gets all the money from politicians, businessmen, partners who are suspicious of each other the list goes on. Essie reads the minds of the people who she's instructed to, her fee is not a laughing matter. She charges one million per minute for a thought read. Her reservation list can go for a year. She's one of the few prominent magicians who can read minds so demands for her are high.

“Give me your phone.” She ordered. I obeyed and gave it to her. She opened the phone. Essie knows all my passwords for everything. A few clicks here and there then she tossed the phone back to me. My notifications bar displays a message.

Transfer of three hundred thousand to Raymond Baldwin.

“That’s for picking you out of that dump, healing your injuries and staying the night under my roof.”

“Wait, since when can't I stay under your roof?” I said bewildered by the statement.

“Starting today.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Nothing in this life is fair”

Well the carpet here is softer than my bed, so I don't mind. I heard Essie clicked her tongue, I guess she read my mind.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

“So how's krothein?” Essie broke the silence, I could sense a little bit of teasing in her tone.

“I don't know, haven't heard from him in like a year”

“Oh,okay.” She replied and the conversation ended there. Maybe she read my mind. I don't know but she didn't sound interested. The lights dimmed and the room was left in complete darkness.

“Beth, get out my carpet.” The mind reader said from her bed.

“Why?”

“Does your nose not work? You fucking sink how can you even sleep with those smell” She's right I forgot to take a bath. I was so tired my brain didn't even alert me to that smell.

I hopped off the carpet and went straight to the bathroom.

“Don't use my soap.!” Essie's voice echoed from the other room. A sigh left my mouth. The bathroom is the same size as my room, which was quite humiliating. I stared at the mirror and the girl that stared back, had disheveled black short hair, black circle under her eyelids which housed her emerald eyes. How inhumane and ugly, I don't like staring at that face.

I freshened up, leaving my clothes in the washing machine. The robe I wore was so soft it felt like clouds wrapped around me.

I sat on the couch, staring at the ceiling. My thoughts went back to krothein. I wonder where he is…. My chest felt tight thinking about it. I don't know why I felt sad, this is my first one million commission. But it didn't give me any ouch of joy. I have been feeling the piercing sadness that felt like a stake to my heart the entire week. I just don't know why…

“Adbula, left a message for you. Didt you see it ?” Essie's voice pierced the silence that was flooding the room. Adbula leaving a message for me?

“Where?”

“It's literally on your phone, don't you use your phone?”

“It's a week old message and you haven't opened it.. Adbula was sick, he asked to see you.” I haven't even used my phone for up to a week because of those creeps, searching for them took a lot of time to handle.

“I'll go visit him tomorrow.”

“He's dead.” Her voice was cold with a hint of anger in it. She has the right to be angry… Adbula is dead, so that's why I have been feeling uneasy for the whole week. He was a mentor to me and a huge figure in our society. The last time I saw him was four years ago, that was when I left the coven. He didn't want me to leave, he was so bittered by it. I thought my relationship with him had gone beyond repair. After that I didn't bother to reach out to him for all these years.

But him calling for me and even leaving a personal message for me… he really wanted to see me that bad, I couldn't even fix our broken relationship. Even if it was down my list of things to do, it was still a priority.

“You’re still going to see them tomorrow right?” Essie's voice broke my train of thoughts.

“Huh?”

“Why would I go? He's already dead.”

“At least try to pay your respect.”

“You want me to go to that place that despises me and don't want to see my face.”

She didn't say anything. She knew there's nothing to say.

“ I will go”

“Okay.”

The conversation I had with him.. I tried hard to think of it but nothing came. My mind felt empty, nothing came, no reaction, was I that dead? An empty husk. My eyes felt heavy and my vision was swallowed by darkness.
