(Ch. 3) The City of Sparks.

(Ch. 3) The City of Sparks.

“This is the boy that Graham brought back, yes?”

Although it seemed like the man had barely raised his voice, the booming sound was enough to rumble my chest.

He must have used some kind of sound based nightmare

Alfred stepped forward

“Yes lord Greenfeather, i have brought him as you requested”

“You may leave now Alfred”

He exited through the main door that we had just walked in through.

“Boy, what is your name?”

I responded immediately

“Rebel Blackhorn”

“I will get straight to the point, my niece and nephew will be visiting tomorrow and i want you to go with them when they leave, you will be going to the Capital city Sempiterne and you will meet with my brother”

I was confused and slightly agitated but i tried to hide it.

“May i ask why sir?”

“My younger brother is the Head of House Greenfeather and he has shown interest in you, when i sent a letter to him with details on what Graham had told me he sent word back asking for you to meet with him at the Greenfeathers main manor”

I wanted to ask more questions but i could feel the moment slipping so i decided to just go along with it, i was planning on going to school eventually anyway and this could be my opportunity to go to a top school in the capital city.

After the meeting with the lord Alfred led me back to my room and told me that i could eat in the main dining hall at eight in the morning and five in the afternoon, when i asked him about the Lords younger brother he dodged the question with a simple explanation of the noble system.

The week went by in a flash, with nothing to do but eat sleep and drink thats all i did.

My mind always returned to the moment of my parents passing, the ice ball should have crushed my fragile body with no resistance but I’m still here, still alive despite the passage of time flying past me for a whole eight years.

Lord Greenfeathers Niece and Nephew arrived and i was again escorted by Alfred to the Grand Hall, When Alfred opened the door he bowed deeply and at first i thought he was bowing to Lord Greenfeather but when i looked closer, he was actually bowing towards the Niece and Nephew.

One of them, the niece, walked up to me.

“Uncle, Is this the boy that we are taking home with us?”

“Yes Lillian, i expect you and Lindon to get along with him”

Next the boy spoke, Lindon is his name according to what Lord Greenfeather just said.

“Yes uncle, and when we arrive in Sempiterne i will take him to meet with Father”

“Very good Lindon, you should be leaving immediately before the daylight slips away”

***

When we arrived at Sempiterne i was blown away by its beauty.

The city was glowing with a radiant yellow light, almost like sparks of lightning, in the centre of the city was a mountain, and on top of the mountain was a dazzling blue castle, made of some kind of unmelting ice

“Uncle never told us your name, what should we call you?”

I turned around, still awestruck.

“M- My name is Rebel”

“Okay, Rebel my name is Lillian and my Brothers name is Lindon, nice to meet you”

“Likewise”

“Can you two stop standing around, we need to get to the estate”

We walked along the paved path in silence, it didn’t take too long long.

The manor itself was just as beautiful as the rest of the city, and it was 5 times larger than the other Greenfeather manor that i had been staying at.

We stepped up to the door and the two heavily armoured guards clicked their heels and then opened the door, the inside of the manor was a cool white with red carpet and golden trimmings.

Rooms to the left and right, one had a large sofa and gleaming fireplace, and another was filled with cooks and i could smell whatever they were cooking, it was all a spectacle and i noticed that those same lightning-like lights were littered around, keeping the inside bright.

In the middle of the manor was a staircase, it led up to the second floor and it split in the middle, going right and left. On the left of the second floor was a few closed doors and on the right was one very large door.

Lindon walked towards the stairs and waited for me to follow, i started walking but a loud noise brought my attention to the large door on the second floor, it had been flung open and a young looking man stepped out, he had bright yellow hair which reminded me of Lindon and lillian, he was smiling down at Lindon.

“Hi father, we brought the boy who was staying at uncle’s manor”

“It’s good to see you two back so soon, but you don’t need to be in such a rush, i only wished to see the boy because my brother told me some rather interesting things”

I took this as my opportunity to jump into the conversation.

“Lord Greenfeather i am honoured that you wished to meet with me, but i’m afraid that i still don’t understand the intent that you had for this visit”

“Join me and my children for Dinner and we can discuss it then”

The man walked towards the banister and then in a motion so fast that i couldn’t even see it, he appeared next to Lillian and she hugged her father, i was stunned by the incredible speed and precision of the movement.

“Stop showing off Papa”

“I’m merely testing the boy Lillian”

“Father, you do know that neither of us can see that movement yet too, right?”

“Before we eat, i would like”

He looked at me expectantly, but i didn’t quite understand so in my stead Lindon spoke

“His name is Rebel”

“I would like Rebel to come with me, and i would like you two to wait in the dining hall”

Lillian tried to protest her father’s decision but Lindon dragged her into the dining hall.

I walked in silence with Lord Greenfeather as he lead me down a well lit spiral staircase.

At the bottom was a door that led into an empty room, with a small pedestal in the centre which had a crystalline ball resting on it.

“Rest your hand on the ball for 10 seconds”

I did as he said and when i removed my hand from the ball a series of numbers began to show on the ball.

“Interesting, poison conjuring and manipulation, so an Irregular nightmare”

“How did you-“

“That doesn’t matter now, lets head back upstairs”
