Ch 8: Failed Magic?

Ch 8: Failed Magic?

Alexis stretched in bed as she got up, she brushed her teeth, took a shower, and grabbed a pair of clothes.

"Hey Lucas, you sure do wake up early." She said as she sat at the table. A dish of fresh off-the-pan eggs and bacon in front of her.

"An early start gives me plenty of time to do things, unlike someone who barely has time to eat the food they just got served."

"Oh shit why didn't you tell me!" Quickly she grabbed a fork and ate as fast as she could.

"Maybe now you'll wake up sooner next time. You ready to finally go back to school?"

Alexis took a second to finish eating before responding.

"I don't have any choice but to be ready."

...

As they made it back to the school Alexis took a breath before going into her classroom. Just as she opened the door someone ran towards her grabbing her shoulders as she became slightly startled.

"Where have you been Alexis?!" A familiar voice yelled at her, it was Sarah.

Alexis let out a sigh of relief at the familiar kind voice.

"I just had something happen she said with a smile."

"Does it have something to do with this blindfold you're wearing?" She said looking closer curiously.

"Yeah, I can't really explain the reasons though."

"Oh, that's fine! I'm sure it's hard to see with that thing on, I'll lead you to our seats." Grabbing Alexis's hand she lead her to the seat she had sat at before the incidents.

"Here it is, I'm just to your right in case you need me." She said sitting down and looking ahead as the teacher walked in.

Alexis followed her lead and sat in her own chair.

The class went on as the teacher told about the weaknesses of a few monsters and Alexis wrote them all down.

1. The Trenick, a monster with 6 spider-like legs, and a blue flower on top of it, burrows itself waiting for prey to get near. Weakness, can't tell between human and object, lure it out and cut off its legs. Inconsequential Rank

2. The Derma, a large 4-headed snake, each snake head has its own conscience and each uses magic, from left to right, fire, ice, nature, and wind. if you use Magic Disperser curses it's nothing more than a big snake. Titan Rank.

3. Zantuar, similar to a Minotaur from mythology, but they are mages. Similar to the Derma it is needed that you use Magic Disperser, but as the Zantuar is not physically weak, you'll need at least 2 B Rank Warriors. No Physical Weakness. High Titan Rank

"Alright, everyone that's all for today's class!"

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Alexis stood up as she felt Lucas's mana approaching.

"Oh, Alexis, would you like to have lunch together?" Sarah said grabbing Alexis's arm.

Alexis was a bit taken aback at her sudden question but quickly came back to her senses.

"Oh um, sure, we can." She said with a smile.

"That's great to hear!" Sarah said in excitement. Sarah quickly got up and went to the door.

"I'll see you then!" She said waving just inside of Alexis mana bubble.

Alexis waved back as Sarah walked out and Lucas walked in to pick her up.

"I see you're already making friends," Lucas said with a smirk.

"Maybe you should try it sometime. So popular but I haven't seen you talk to anyone but me and the dean." She said with a returned smirk.

Lucas grew a bit flustered and stayed quiet as he walked with Alexis to the next classroom. Sitting down in their seats once again.

"Welcome back to Fundamentals of Mana everyone. Today we're finally gonna do circle practice. This is the Mana circle for fire." He said as he held his hand out, a small circle appeared, then appeared a small flame flickering in his hand.

Alexis could sense the circle, the mana that went from his mana circle to his palm sourcing its energy, the control needed to manage the flame, it was like she was being given the equation and the answer.

"The most important thing when it comes to magic is visualization and calculation. You must visualize the flame, how you want it to move, how you want it to feel, and how you want it to interact. Calculate each component that goes into the fire, and with good enough visualization and calculation." He said pausing and grabbing two pieces of paper.

"The flame with either be an inferno that consumes the paper." He said placing one piece in the fire as it caught a blaze and turned to ash.

"Or a warmth that gently wraps around you." This time the paper did not burn while in the flame. Instead, it was wrapped in a golden glow.

Many of the students looked in awe at the teacher who showed magic control they had never seen. But Alexis was truly amazed, she saw how precise the control of his mana had to be, one mistake and it could have burned everything that got close. The equation was amazing.

"Now I'd like everyone to give it a try. Be very careful. But in case anything goes wrong I'll be here to intervene."

Next to her Lucas created a small flame.

Alexis focused on her mana veins, drawing a portion of mana to her palm. As she drew the circle exactly as the teacher had done. As the channel opened at the completion of the circle, but it was completely back, unlike everyone else's, and it felt as if her mana was being pulled out forcefully, as a small crack appeared instead of a flame but she was not able to stop it.

"I-I can't stop it!" She yelled as the crack began to grow and lose control, everyone stepping back.

Lucas turned to her and grabbed her wrist pushing his mana into her.

"Use your Mana to push the channel shut I'll help you!"

Alexis listened, trying her best to close the gate, following Lucas's mana flow as a guide as the crack closed and repaired itself, closing the gate as the mana circle broke.

The class was silent as everyone looked wide-eyed at Alexis, as both Alexis and Lucas were trying to catch their breath.

"L-Lucas, why is everyone looking at us like that? Don't people usually fail on their first time?" She whispered his way.

"That...was not what a failed magic looks like..." He said with a concerned look on his face.

"Huh?"
