Ch 7: Despair Turned Hope

Ch 7: Despair Turned Hope

"W-What do you mean I should be dead?!" Alexis said in a panic.

"Your mana paths, when you were forming them, how did you lay it out..."

"U-um, well I pathed it out using my veins to spread it throughout my body, then I made it converge at the heart..."

"Your Mana, it's replaced your veins and heart, your body has become run by your Mana."

"W-What?" Alexis closed her eyes sensing the Mana inside her, she hadn't paid attention to it before, but now she saw it. Her body was solely being run by Mana, her blood was Mana, the veins were Mana, her heart was Mana, and every organ had some amount of Mana controlling it.

"H-How is this even possible..." Alexis said shaking.

"We...don't know, you're the only person to have done this," Lucas spoke up.

"We'll think of something to do, for now, I'll give you a small house, it's a little from the main campus, but we can't have people finding this out."

"Y-Yes ma'am..." Alexis couldn't think straight, was she gonna die? Is this why she was in so much pain?

"Lucas, here's the address, please take her there."

Lucas nodded as he gently helped Alexis up, in far contrast from the anger he had shown not long ago. Alexis followed as her mind kept blank. She wouldn't answer Lucas when he spoke, or react to anything around her, her body was going through the motions but no one was really there.

"Here's your new house..." He said opening the door and heading inside with her, taking her to the room.

He stood for a second, a face that showed his worry, before walking out. Alexis laid down staring at the ceiling, She couldn't tell how much time was passing after a while as her mind faded, a sleepy feeling grabbing at her until she wasn't able to keep her eyes open any longer.

"W-Where am I?" She said looking around.

A pitch-black world, nothing could be seen as she floated without a destination.

[The Great one Peers into your mind]

"W-what?"

In front of her, she saw what it meant, an eyeball slowly opened. As an eye of incomprehensible size stared at her, its eye pitch black and a slit pupil that leaked a bright light. Her mind felt as if it was being torn in half her existence shook as her mind filled with voices who screamed at her. Her entire being couldn't handle the being that showed itself to her.

"You who meddle with the constraints of space and time, your efforts are futile, you whose only family remaining died as you ran. Those you know will die just as painfully. Until you are alone, in which case I will force you to an eternal life of pain!" A hand tore through the darkness grabbing her and pulling her through, her mind snapping back to her body, as she found herself sitting on her knees, staring at the ceiling as blood flowed from her eyes.

"I-I can't see, I can't see, m-my eyes, t-they hurt. W-WHAT HAPPENED TO MY EYES!!"

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"SMASH" The sound of all the glass in the house, breaking violently into small pieces.

Her mana was going rogue, smashing the building she was into pieces a rumble being created under her. She held her head in her hands as she began to scream, the rumble beneath her growing worse. items falling off the walls, glass shatters, and objects getting destroyed amid the Chaos.

The sound of quick steps up the stairs could be heard as the door busted open.

"ALEXIA!" Lucas yelled as he ran over to her. His mana shielded him from the raging mana around her. Cracking more and more at every moment as it slammed into the shield.

As Lucas got close enough to see her he paused for a moment shocked at what he saw. The holes in her head were where her eyes used to be, as blood rained down the sides. Lucas snapped out of it before hitting the back of her neck, making her pass out.

The mana settled after leaving the entire house in tatters.

"What happened here..." He said as he took her back to campus and to his dorm room.

Lucas looked over at Alexis. her skin paler than ever.

"BAM" The door flew open as Ashala walked into the room.

"Lucas what the hell happened at the house!" She yelled.

Alexis shocked awake at the sound of her yelling quickly sat up.

"W-What happened, where am I?"

Ashala went quiet at the sight. and slowly stepped over to Alexia.

"What happened to you, Alexia?" she said softly.

"I-I had fallen asleep, t-then I was in a void with an eyeball that stared me down, saying everyone would die..it felt like my head was splitting and before I knew I was back to myself, but I couldn't see, my eyes..what happened to my eyes..."

"First just breathe, I want you to use your Mana to see, so expand a bubble to see around you," Ashala said softly.

Alexis nodded as she concentrated. It was easier to control her mana after losing her sight, She formed a bubble the size of the room, and she was able to sense everything as if she was seeing it.

"I-I did it."

"Good job, this will be your method of seeing. Your eyes...they were vaporized, I'm assuming it has something to do with the eyeball you saw."

"T-they were vaporized!?" Alexis sat in silence for a little, trying to process the information.

"C-Couldnt a spell be used to heal them?"

"Healing spells are unable to restore something which is no longer there...Alexis, for the near future I want you to stay with Lucas, a lot of stuff is happening, and it seems to be around you."

Alexis nodded at her. a pain in her chest she couldn't be rid of.

...

Time went on for a few days. Ashala gave her a blindfold to help with the phantom pain that remained. Alexis kept more to herself than usual, leaving her room only to eat.

She couldn't understand, she thought she might have been able to do something, why be brought here if she couldn't, there must be a reason..right? But as the days continued by she felt herself sink deeper and deeper into doubt and self torment. Until she crumbled in front of Lucas.

"What have I done to deserve this...why must everything around me constantly crumble." She said as she looked at Lucas. Her hands clenching, her nails digging into her skin.

Lucas sat, he had no strong feelings related to Alexis until recently, she was just a girl who was an outlier, unlike anyone he had seen, from an era long past, if anything he was curious about her, and found her to be an interesting character. But he realized he now had a pain in his chest at the sight of her, pity for the girl ripped away from her family, a stranger to the world he was born in.

Lucas walked over to her loosening her grip so she wouldn't hurt herself more.

"You have done nothing wrong, do you feel that resentment and sorrow you hold Alexis, don't let it pull you deeper into the void. Use it as fuel, go back to school, and keep training. Your eyesight may be gone, but your magic is not, it may feel hopeless, but as long as you have that magic inside of you, there will always be hope left, you are the first to be able to use this form of magic refinement, you were able to form a bubble of mana just by being asked with no instruction, I have a feeling there is a reason you were brought here, and that's to use that power inside of you to give us a fighting chance again." Lucas said with a kind smile.

Alexis felt the weight on her chest finally lift slightly. He was right, the pain she was feeling would lead to the future that being spoke of. One where everyone she knew was dead, the death of her brother for nothing, and her eternal pain. Alexis finally found a slight spark that could reignite her hope in his words. Looking up towards Lucas she now had a smile on her face.

"Thank you."
