Chapter 6: Flight of the delver

Jack and john quickly ran into the main area of the ship towards the tube. Soon Nelva could see strange black glass things slide out of the wall only to display moving pictures! She could see a small caravan racing through the open plains that had been around the dungeon. Around the caravan she could clearly see quite a few horses carrying men and women of various species aiming bows, spears, and spells at those on the carts.

“Alright. John, you stay with the ship just in case something else comes up.” Jack said as he got into one of the tubes. “I have been wanting to try out the high speed arial combat armor since it came out and this will be a perfect time. Keeps truck-kun away from them just in case. Besides, we need speed to catch up to them. Truck kun can co fast, but not as fast as the armor.”

John nodded and gave a thumbs up as the tube slammed shut. Inside he made his weapon selection as the armor was carefully lowered towards him. He slipped off his shirt and shuddered, feeling it slowly being pressed against his body and click into place. Piece after piece was lowered down being carefully latched into place due to this armor set needing to be more precisely put on compared to the other armor. Any mistakes could mean him spinning out of control or the armor coming lose during flight. He felt the thruster pack being latched onto his back and the extra thrusters being carefully placed to accommodate his body shape, all handled by the high-end computer.

Soon he felt the last of the armor click into place as his helmet was slowly lowered onto his head. Since this was a newer set, they had yet to give it a paint job, so it was still the sparling base white the armor came in. He didn’t mind though since he knew just how he wanted to “introduce” himself.

Once his armor was all cleared, he let the arms attach the scabbard for his “sword” onto his left hip and hang the sleek and angular “kriss” pattern SMG onto his right. Due to this armor being fully powered he opted for the extended mags as well and felt a few being attached to the back of his hip. He knew he would probably be losing some, but mags like these were fairly cheap these days.

The door slid open and he strolled out towards the side door. “Wait! The ship is still moving!” Nelva called out as he slid open the door and stepped onto the grate.

“It’s alright.” Jack calmly replied as he activated the thrusters on his suit. “I can fly faster.”

With that he lept off the side and did a small spin for dramatic flair before he let his thrusters roar to life. He felt his body be pushed towards his feet as the G forces slammed into him as he rocketed over the grassy plains towards the ongoing fight. He let out a whoop of joy as he watched the hills, few trees, and grass rush by him as he picked up more and more speed, racing both to get to the fight before any of the caravanners died. That, and he just wanted to go fast.

He watched as the caravanners’ skillfully blocked the arrows and spears of the bandits with metal shields as some of them let loose with crossbows slowly picking off the bandits. One of the caravanners was a massive gnoll woman with blackened metal armor with a crossbow that was as big as a small child! She calmly drew the massive string back before loading a bolt and launching the bolt that was closer to a spear at the attackers. One managed to get out a scream before they were impaled with enough force to fling them off their horse and pin them to the field.

Jack calmly dodged the impaled corpse clearly seeing almost stereotypical bandit markings. A bloody hand, fangs, and some text that even he could tell was probably misspelled. No style at all. He then focused back on the battle seeing them get closer and closer before deciding it was time to announce his intervention.

He drew his sword and gun before flicking the safety off of both of them. He knew he was going too fast for anyone to have noticed him yet, so he waited till he was right on top of them before holding down the trigger of his sword. He felt the chainsword rev to life in his hand as the high-end diamond nano-chain whirled in its housing right before he brought it back as he approached a bandit readying a molotov cocktail.

The bandit never knew what hit him.

The fighters heard a roar and what sounded like a beast from hell as they saw a white armored being roar past a bandit. Blood rained down onto the field from the bandit’s waist before his top half simply fell off the rest of his body. The bandit letting go of his weapon to desperately try to grab onto his own legs before he simply fell to the ground as his horse raced off in pure fear.

Everyone stopped to look at what looked to be a holy warrior from their legends of old as Jack turned and hovered in front of them. His armor was easily able to keep him just in front of the group even though their horses were going as fast as they could. Their eyes wandered over the mostly white armor now partially covered in blood on the right side from the bandit he had cut in half. His sword screaming as the teeth continued to spin and flinging out bits that remained inside of them from its prior deed.

Jack knew what he looked like right now and couldn’t help but laugh as he looked at the faces of those before him. Judging by their reactions they were thinking the same thing. He lifted up his SMG and aimed it as a cluster of bandits deciding to play into it a little. “GUILTY!” He declared through the speakers in his suit before he pulled the trigger of the SMG.

The bandits and caravanners flinched and took cover as the device clattered to life. Bursts of fire spitting out of the end of the strange device as bits of brass fell out of the side. The bandits that he had been aiming at flinched a few times before they started to fall off their horses with blood trailing behind them.

The bandits worked fast once they knew what side the newcomer was on. They turned their focus from the caravanners onto the “angel” quickly firing any spell, bow, spear, and anything else they could at it. They could tell just how lethal it was and wanted to put it down as fast as they could.

Jack, however, was faster. He used his thrusters to fling himself sideways to dodge the rain of death that flew where he had just been. He knew his armor could handle some of those arrows and spears, but the bolts and magical spells could still do some damage. Particularly the spells.

He then launched himself forward towards the right side of the caravan where the most bandits were lined up. His gun chattered as it flung its own rain of death towards the bandits. He watched as a few more jerked a little before falling off their horses onto the field. He fired until his mag ran dry before he swiped at an orc with his sword.

The orc grinned and raised its sword to block the attack only to quickly find its steel lacking. The orc’s sword sparked and hissed as it was slowly cut in half by the diamond tips. The orc could then do nothing as the sword snapped in half and the chainsword dug into its body. Jack winced a bit as he felt the body of the orc push back against his sword as it let out a scream of pain as his sword slid through the armor and body on the raider before it finally slid out the orc’s back cutting the raider in half.

Freed from the orc’s thick body he swung his blade through the air and easily slipped it through the throat of an elf who had nothing to block it with. That time the sword didn’t pause at all as it sliced through the bare throat and “freed” the elf’s head from his body.

Jack finally made it to the back of the caravan and quickly replaced the mag of his gun as he watched the bandits start to frantically break off of the caravan knowing fully well that they had no chance against both the caravan guards AND the flying dealer of death. The guards cheered watching their attackers ride away with a few taking a few parting shots at their backs in vengeance. The gnoll managed to get the last kill as her massive bolt slammed into the back of a fleeing elven raider with the bolt forcing the villain to fall off his horse.

Now that they were safe the caravan slowly came to a stop and hopped out to make sure their horses were okay and to tend to the wounded. Luckily none of them had died. Some, however, were still wounded. Once they were sure everything was okay they started to cheer and motion Jack over.

“All clear. Come in for landing. A few casualties we need to take… care…” His voice trailed off as he looked at the caravan. If a normal person looked at them there would be suspicion, but he could see a couple carts riding much lower than the others despite having less gear on them. Add on the fact there were no real markings anywhere to indicate who they were with let him know exactly what kind of people he had just saved.

He took a breath, then walked towards them putting away his weapons. He knew very well not to judge those like them. “Hello!” He called out stopping a bit of a distance from the cart. He knew not to just run up to them even as their savior. “Anything more I can do to help? Our flying ship is arriving soon that can help some of the wounded!” He called out. The caravanners looked at each other then nodded, quickly lowering a few men and women down and carrying them over followed by the gnoll. Once they were closer Jack could see the Gnoll had taken a few arrows and bolts herself!

“Alright, just line them up and we will work on them.” He called out before walking over to a tall lizard folk who was clearly in charge. “I know, I won’t tell.” He calmly whispered to the lizard who looked at the “holy knight” a few times before taking a deep breath and nodding before shouting out orders.

It was clear they were used to very strange things as few of them even flinched when Truck-kun came in and landed by the caravan. Both John and Nelva hopped out with Nelva quickly using her magic on some of the more seriously injured while John went around with a trauma kit patching up others. Soon John reached the gnoll and looked her over a couple of times before taking a deep breath and started to work with her to get the bolts out. One by one carefully removing them while making sure the heads came out with them. “Alright. Just take deep breaths and this will be over soon.” He calmly told the gnoll. “This is going to sting a good bit, so if you need something to bite down on let me know.” He warned before pouring some antiseptic onto the wound getting a deep hiss from the gnoll.

“Its alright bone saw. I have been injured in a battle before.” She growled out as she took the pain knowing well that magic would do little for her kind. John paused awhile then nodded slowly as he continued his work. It never really dawned on him, but this world would have soldiers too.

Would fantasy soldiers know how he felt? In a world without guns, would they be able to understand? For now, though he continued to tend to the gnoll, both remained quiet as he slowly started to stitch her wounds closed.
