Joining the Camp (part 1)

With my senses now enhanced, I saw everyone's movements now slow as turtles. Feeling the wind and waiting for a gap through the sea of people being obstacles, I threw the spear, and it went through the general's head without any difficulty. He stopped his ongoing attack and fell off the horse immediately.

"AHHH!" the soldiers from my side yelled. "The enemy's general is dead! The enemy's general is dead!" They were really happy, weren't they? Then I heard another voice. It was feminine and soft, but somehow the whole battlefield was able to hear it clearly.

"Your general is dead! Give up and blood will not be spoiled anymore! go back to where you belong!"

When the enemies heard this, they panic and the battlefield became more chaotic than it already was. The enemies started to run back to where they came from, and most people on 'my side' stopped fighting and going back to their base as well. Notice that I said most? Because there are few that used this as an advantage to chase to kill more enemies.

After about half an hour later, all that is here where I am standing were corpses. Hundreds or even thousands of corpses on the battlefield who will be forgotten in history and all their effort will be rewarded to their superiors who just sit there and came up with theories or 'strategies' without lifting a finger. They never know what it is like on the battlefield. They believe that soldiers can be sacrificed for victory, but they themselves wouldn't put their loved ones at risk in the name of a bigger goal.

I don't know why I am ranting here. Probably because seeing those bodies made me mad at why nations keep fighting each other? in my world and here too. To be more specific, I am shaming the nations that kept trying to invade others because defending is not wrong, attack is.

Standing there, alone and having no idea where to go, I decided to go to the girl general's troop's camp since I am wearing their clothes anyway. The system probably wore that clothes for me to hint that I should follow them.

Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.

Talking about the system, isn't it common for congratulating players after a first kill? I know that it sounded wrong for congratulating killing people, but I am just thinking from a game developer's perspective. Why should I bother anyway? I guess it is not important anyway. I should stop nitpicking at stuff.

I was able to enter the camp without being questioned. Guess that they can't keep track of too many people. This made me think, "Isn't this basically inviting spies to your camp? Surely they must have a way to look after themselves. That means there must be someone in the dark watching to see anything suspicious." I became extremely cautious and observant after that thought.

I made myself walk as normally as possible to avoid suspicion. I was trying to find a place that I could hide, but there was none. The camp was designed so that there was no blind spot. I was panicking while trying to act normal because it was getting dark, and I was exhausted. I need a place to sleep and some food too. If you pay attention then you would have noticed too that I haven't eaten for days since coming here.

But then I saw the girl general from before walking towards me. "I need to avoid her. I am too tired to deal with whatever might come when she notices me," I thought.

So I acted as if trying to find something in my pocket to lower my head to avoid eye contact. Things went smoothly. She walked right past without paying any attention, and I was able to find a place to hide. I quickly fell asleep and woke up realizing what just happened was a dream,

"Hey! Turn around and let me look at you!" she said after walking past me.

I hesitated and didn't know what to do. So I didn't do anything. After a few seconds of that, I heard her pulling out her sword. Probably because I looked suspicious just standing there. Understandable, I would have done the same thing if I were her.

"Are you not listening? I said turn around!" she demanded.

Having no other choice, I slowly turned around after her command… with my head still down. I did follow her command, literally.

"Lift your head up!" she demanded again. I have no choice but to do so. "So you were the guy that told me to withdraw back then," she said when seeing my face. "Why are you here?" she asked.

"I am just going back to my station," I acted.

Suddenly, the girl rushed up and put her sword on my neck.

"Wait a second! What are you doing?" I was surprised.

"This is the general's area. Who are you?" She said it calmly which made me feel terrified.

"If I were you, I would have killed me and not questioned them like this. I could be a spy," I thought to myself.

"I saw you threw the spear and killed the enemies' general. At least I know you are not a spy," she said as if reading my mind. Who are you?" she asked again.

"Can we talk in private?" I tried to not show fear in my voice.

There was no response. At least she could have kicked me or something and I would understand. This silence was killing me cause I don't know what was going on in her head. A few seconds of silence felt like an eternity. Then suddenly she took the sword off my neck and put it away.

"Follow me," she said.
