Chapter 24. Desaret.

Xania fills Anise in as Anise places all the scrolls on a table with no visible changes in her expression until Xania told her that she would be protecting the elves, making her annoyed.

My lord, do I really have to?

Yea, made a promise, I'm not backing out now.

Then you protect them instead.

I will be, but you're better at elf magic so you will be making sure nobody else tries to spy on us while I continue learning spells.

But I also need to learn spells too.

You were bragging about how your learning speed was faster than mine earlier, and I'm almost done learning all in the library so… you're probably all done already.

… I'll protest against this unfair treatment.

Sure, you can protest all you want once we get back.

I hate you.

I agree, this is also revenge.

Petty.

I know.

Anise points to the many scrolls on the table before crossing her arms.

Those are filtered out to contain only things about past demon lords, I haven't read them, I'm not helping either.

Anise teleports away, leaving Xania there.

Crap, forgot these were still here.

Xania grabs the scrolls, teleporting away with them back to the library before starting to read them.

As Xania reads through the scrolls, with most of the information being new to her like some demon lords in the past being able to use their demonic features as weapons along with how most demon lords are humanoids which provides an advantage in fighting.

As she keeps reading, she eventually finds the one she wants.

“All demons are theories to be connected to the demon lord through the soul, the place where one's mana is produced and stored, with the first demon lord's specialty as dark magic, causing most demons to have an innate talent for dark magic. It is also said that all demon lords have a stronger connection to each other by the soul than they do with demons which also causes there to only be a single demon lord at once at all times. Demon lords will be able to benefit from this connection by keeping talents and skills from their predecessors, making learning magic, speaking other languages or other skills that their predecessors have learned easy for they themselves to learn”

Huh? So the reason I'm not a complete genius in elf magic is because no demon lords in the past bothered to learn it?

What rubbish, learning nearly all the magic in the library within a day is still a genius. The queen suddenly appears, surprising Xania as she keeps the scrolls, putting them into her bracelet.

Why are you here?

Simple, Anise has detected the use of scouting magic to try spying on you but was able to cause the magic to recoil, injuring the intruder.

She did?

Indeed, it also felt a little personal.

Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

How so?

I believe you have to ask her for that.

Right.

The queen leads Xania back to the interrogation-looking room, the one she brought Xania to at first when they first entered with Anise standing in front of a random tied up and gagged woman.

Anise.

My lord? Why are you here?

I heard you captured someone and that it was personal?

Maybe just a bit.

Xania looks at the unfamiliar sight of the woman, tilting her head curiously making Anise sigh.

My lord, she's the one who cut my arm off.

What?

Yea, she's a paladin from the kingdom of Lucival.

Really? Do we need her alive?

Not me.

Xania turns to the queen who shakes her head too.

Xania walks up to the woman who is glaring at her despite being afraid and glares back at her, accidently letting out some mana leak out, causing the queen to purify the air quickly.

Anise here.

Xania passes Anise a bracelet with Anise looking curious.

Yes?

The bracelet has very strong healing magic along with very strong fire magic on the inside. I made it based on the human version of what they think the underworld is like.

My lord, why are you giving this to me?

She cut off your arm didn't she?

I guess?

So? If you want, you can place her in the bracelet.

This is a portable torture device.

Yea.

My lord, can I decide what to do with her?

Why not? You're the one who lost an arm, not me.

Could I have some privacy?

Sure.

Xania walks out with the queen following behind.

Demon lord.

Yes?

Do you have any spare of those… devices? I would like to buy or trade for one of those.

Why?

Not many elves know or are willing to torture their enemies for information due to not being able to stomach it, so this would be helpful.

Sure, I'll just give you one for free since you let me read all the books in the library.

Much appreciated.

Xania passes the queen a spare bracelet with the exact same magic circles on it.

If the bracelet runs out of mana, it stops working.

I'm aware.

The queen freezes for a moment confusing Xania.

I believe Anise would like to see you alone, so I'll just leave for now.

How do you know?

She used telepathy with some… not so friendly words.

The queen walks out, using the teleportation circle as Xania teleports back to Anise who is currently holding chains with the paladin woman's hands and legs chained to it and clearly angry but looking at the floor instead of glaring at her.

What is going on?

My lord, I can just spare her right? Like this?

Sure? But if you drop your guard can't she just…

Nope, the chains have dark mana in them, suppressing her holy magic.

So you aren't gonna put her into the bracelet?

My lord, you really can be cruel at times like this but no.

Sure I guess, it's your choice.

Xania walks up to the chained up ex-paladin, lifting her chin with one hand to look at her.

What's your name?

V-Vanice.

Very well, Anise, don't let her escape.

Of course my lord!

But… where will she be sleeping and staying? Since I don't believe we have a dungeon, not like a normal dungeon could hold her, not that we have one.

… I'll figure that part out later.

Anise, this isn't a fetish of yours, is it?

Shut up.

Guess not.

Xania sighs, not wanting to be part of that at all, and goes back to study some morning magic in the library.

I guess I should study some history? I always sleep when Anise is trying to teach me afterall.

Xania sighs, picking out a random book named “General history of the three realms”, there are three realms? Not two? I guess I should really concentrate more on Anise's lesson.

“At the start, there was only a single world named “Augeria”, but due to a great war amongst every species, the world was split into three realms, the middle realm where the the main intelligent species are the humans, ruled over by multiple kings, named “aurora”, named after the beautiful lights that can be found every couple years due to the aftereffects of the war which still last to this day. The second realm, named the “underworld” where the intelligent species who rule it are the demons, ruled over by a single ruler, the demon lord. The last realm, being one with a name lost to time, is a place where the gods reside, making sure that another war the calibre of the great war does not occur and not interfering further than that. Most of the underworld's history is unknown to the middle realm, and the third realm has no additional information. The history of our current realm has not changed much over the past hundreds of years, with constant fighting between the humans and demons along with the three main kingdoms not changing much.”

Wow, the only thing I learned was that the gods are real and not a figment of the humans imagination.

Xania puts the book back, preparing to teleport out as she hears a sudden voice coming from the bookshelf.

What is this? An elf who doesn't believe in the gods? No, this isn't an elf, a demon perhaps? Ah, a demon lord, the second blessed by a god!

Xania walks over to the voice, pulling a normal insignificant looking book out from the book shelf, using her magic to remove the illusion magic from the book, causing it to show it's true form.

Oh, what a surprise, one of the few things Anise taught me about that I listened to.

Let me think about what it was, ah right. “A book that of which has sight, speech intelligence and feelings of a living being, blood red in color with a texture similar to flesh”. You fit the description don't you? What's your name?

Desaret, the bringer of disasters.
