What's Left

The voice called for him, Adrith couldn’t shake the feeling, it was for him, so he turned his head. He could see the Revenant frantically moving around the Soulless. It was trying to get its attention, trying to fly into it, maybe even settle, Adrith couldn’t tell exactly, but he could feel the desperation, the pain it had. Adrith clenched his fist, ”Damn it”. Adrith then turned back to the monster, “We can’t leave it”

“What?” Evelyn twisted to Adrith.

“You’re right, it is strange”, Adrith said as he moved towards the Soulless, gesturing to Evelyn, “Hand me those metal pieces”

Evelyn’s face spelled confusion, showed concern, and twitched in such a way annoyance was very heavily implied. She outright said, “No”

“Then hand me the wand. I think we can free the Revenant”, Adrith dryly remarked.

Evelyn looked at the Soulless, it was a physical monster, she was nervous, yet, Adrith seemed confident and willing. Evelyn then to the hapless Revenant, she could see almost everything about the spirit. Its facial features were clear enough to see, it was frantic, it was scared, it was…human.

Evelyn took a breath in as she pulled out the metal shards they were able to retrieve from the Revenant remains, “Here, I’ll support you”

Adrith lightly turned and took the 2 shards of metal into his hands. He looked down at his chest, he could see multiple holes the size of a child's ball cut into his plate armor. The chest piece was mostly useless, the only real protection it gave was on the shoulders and some parts of the arms.

Adrith sighed as he took the pieces of metal into his hands like 2 daggers as he began to move towards the Soulless, “Come now, meet thine maker”.

The Soulless took one step forward and made such a powerful sound it rang the ears of Evelyn, but more so, shook Adrith as he had barely blocked a stab that would have pierced right through his head.

Adrith could instantly tell, that it was highly trained, it had countless amounts of experience, in life Adrith could probably guess this was someone incredibly talented, yet in this form, it lacked will. Adrith knew where it would aim, in a spot with no armor, yet it did not mean it did not nearly break him.

Adrith slid back as he kept up his guard, he could see the Soulless prepare to pounce on to him once more, yet he needed to block these attacks. He had a thought, and the moment the blade hit him, it confirmed it.

The Soulless took another step and blitzed Adrith once more, this time Adrith was much more prepared, he had slipped to the side, yet the moment he did, he witnessed the Soulless perform the same technique the Revenant did, it spun with such speed, even with a miss, the monster was able to spin with such grace and speed it allowed it to slash directly for Adrith’s throat.

Adrith didn’t have the time to react to the attack, it moved with such speed that no normal person could. Adrith didn’t react, he predicted, he knew what kind of attack that would come at him. The Revenant performed a much similar attack and both the Soulless and Revenant attacked in such a way that they would be impossible to distinguish.

Adrith took the metal piece and parried the Soulless’ blade away from his neck. With his other hand, he tightly took hold of his other makeshift weapon and quickly stabbed into the side of the Soulless. Yet the strange physicality of the monster made it very apparent that such simple attacks would not be enough, as the metal screeched across the strange flesh armor the monster had.

Adrith and the Soulless began to perform a deadly dance with each other. Evelyn watched in awe as she saw a maelstrom of death form in front of her. The speed at which Adrith and the Soulless moved was something akin to trying to catch only one raindrop or follow a single dandelion in the wind.

She took a breath in, she couldn’t keep up, that was fine, she couldn’t throw an attack without hurting Adrith, that was fine, all she needed to do was support him. Evelyn began to focus her energy, she focused her mind as she began to pick out the moves of Adrith. She could sense Adrith as he was the only one within that flurry of movements that had an actual energy signature. If Evelyn wasn’t in the same room as him and could see the Soulless, she would believe from sensing the energy in the area alone he was fighting by himself.

She could sense his movements, she could sense how he moved, the energy constantly fluxing and flowing within him. She could see his energy waxing and waning as he enhanced different areas of his body. She could sense his movements, they were clean, yet they felt all human. As she opened her eyes she could see that the fighting was intense, he was fighting something absolutely extraordinary.

Evelyn took a breath in as she began to focus on Adrith again, she began to recollect what magic could she give him. She never thought to create many physical empowerment spells. She focused on mental enhancements for studying, reading, and investigations, yet nothing to make her better at fighting. She could place a ward on Adrith, yet that would only buy him a single hit at most.

She winced as she thought about what she could do, ‘Maybe I could make an attack anyways and he might dodge?’

It was in that thought she realized she could do something, if Adrith could sense her magic, then she could send attacks and he could dodge them.

With a wirey smile, Evelyn took in the saliva that began to build in her mouth as she took in a deep breath and began to perform her plan.

“Hear me, oh northern star that illuminates the night, answer me”

“Hear my request, show to witless the truths beyond the veil, answer my wish”

“Hear my plea, give to he who has not seen tomorrow, answer my desire, Sight”

Adrith felt at that moment a strange new sensation. He could sense the energy within him with such clarity that it became like looking into a glass bottle. He could sense the energies around him, he could sense clearly how the Revenant moved even though he could not see it, how Evelyn stood even as she was behind him. It was the creature in front of him that alluded to his new sight, it felt as if it was completely invisible. Adrith was only set off for but a moment, it was, however, that moment that began to push him onto the back foot. He needed to get used to a new sense in the middle of a pitched battle, he gritted his teeth and damned the thought of Evelyn just messing around. If he was to fight it alone, he believed he could have found a way, but now? He wasn’t sure anymore after losing such tempo.

Evelyn nodded to herself pleased once her first spell was done, she had one more spell she wished to bestow Adrith before she began to join the fight. She took in another breath, she set her arms out wide as she began to chant again,

“Hear me, oh night warding souls, ye who live above in the darkest skies, answer me”

“Hear my request, change the sky, and give to he a new sign, answer my wish, Guidance”

Once the spell finished, above Adrith’s head formed a single white star, for Adrith it meant nothing. The fighting raged on as the light did not obscure Adrith’s vision, and the Soulless seemed not to care as its faceless mask had no eyes.

The light was never the answer Evelyn looked for, she cast that spell to give Adrith a second chance in case her spell failed. Evelyn cleared her throat as she took up the wand and began to aim towards the torrent of fighting as she prepared to truly join the fight.

“Hear me, oh falling star, cleave through the night and turn the night aglow, answer me, bolt”

When Evelyn began to cast her spell, a bead of silvery white and gold light focused at the very tip of her wand. As the chanting continued she began to move her wand trying to aim at the empty space within her mind that Adrith was fighting. She became nervous as the moment she finished her spell chant, the small bead of energy burst forth into a stream of energy. It ripped through the air with such speed, that no normal person could dodge such a spell, let alone while not looking.

Yet the moment the beam launched, Adrith’s head turned and saw the energy beam. The stream of light streaked straight towards him, ready to strike him as the Soulless moved to take the moment Adrith turned his head.
