An Answer for Tomorrow

An Answer for Tomorrow

Adrith senses the flash of magic within his mind, from directly behind him he could sense the energy within them swell, condense, and rush out. Adrith turned out of pure instinct to see what was attacking him from behind, there he saw Evelyn had made an attack.

Adrith’s face could not be seen, yet it would have been apt to say his jaw had slammed to the floor with the pure astonishment he had. He twisted his body as he leaned back, turning his head to face the Soulles again as he realized it might use this moment to attack him, and he was right.

The Soulless had pounced on the moment he had turned as it brought its blade up to cut him down. Yet, it seemed not to realize the situation it was in as well, as with Adrith dodging the magic spell, it was directly in the line of fire for the magic. The golden beam of light struck true and sent the Soulless staggering.

Adrith righted himself, and without hesitation, he lept into the fight again. The magic attack first set the Soulless off balance, and Adrith took full advantage. He sprung himself towards the monster, bringing his hand up and slamming the metal shard down onto its chest. A loud hissing sound began to be made as the metal had not broken through the armor, it dragged across and left a thin line on the body of the creature.

The Soulless was nearly impossible to damage. Adrith saw this first hand, not only here, but before. He knew magic was the only answer, yet he hoped the magic within the metal would have given him a chance.

The Soulless brought both of its hand blades back as it lunged forward to impale Adrith. Evelyn was staggered in that moment of her attempting another chant, she knew he had the Guidance, yet it wasn’t a warding spell against all attacks, only magic.

The two blades stabbed directly into Adrith’s stomach. Blood began to pour from the wounds, then blood spurt from his mouth and out of his helm, as it then poured onto the Soulless.

Evelyn watched in shock, she saw in just a moment, Adrith was overwhelmed and then killed. It took not even a moment. Her vision began to blur, she felt her heart rate increase, and she could feel the fear sinking into her bones.

She then gritted her teeth, “BOLT!”

A small yet brilliant beam of silver light struck the side of the Soulless. Its head turned as its arns began to turn outward, it was to completely bisect Adrith. Yet, its arms didn’t move, Adrith’s hands had taken hold of the arm blades. The Energy with Adrith’s arms swelled, he was breathing loud and violently, enough so to see mist billowing from his mouth. The Soulless tilted its head back as it brought it forward, in an attempt to cut through Adrith’s helm and end him.

Adrith had other plans, he shifted forward, impaling himself further onto the blades as another magic attack was cast by Evelyn. It struck the side of the Soulless’ head and staggered it, and Adrith used this moment to bring his legs up and slammed his knees into the arms of the Soulless. The attack hit with such force Evelyn thought a church bell was rung, she saw Adrith had somehow shattered the arm blades.

Evelyn then saw in his leg armor, that both of the pieces of metal had been embedded into his legs and blood was pouring out from the wounds. Adrith proceeded to pull the two blades from his body, blood began to pour from the wounds, and then it stopped. Evelyn looked in shock as she could sense his energy had begun to circulate in the areas of his wounds, the blood stopped pouring. She was astonished, yet was broken from her momentary shock.

“Keep attacking!”

Evelyn stiffened as she began to cast her magic. Evelyn began to yell the same word over and over again. Bolt. A simple spell most who could use magic would know. It was the most basic form of offensive magic. A concentrated bolt of energy compressed and launched. Bolt had many forms of ways of being used, because of its simplicity, mages would perform the spell without an incantation, most often used in performance with a catalyst. Others can even perform the spell without a Catalyst and only with the use of a spell-casting word. Yet in both of these forms, the spell can lose power, without the concentration and understanding for it, it makes gaining more power for the spell more difficult.

This is the reason why Evelyn had performed her bolt with a full incantation. Yet now, she attacked without care, performing multiple attack spells within the same time she would cast one of her empowered bolts. As each one fired, they streaked through the darkness towards the battle.

It was like beasts fighting, Adrith severely wounded, took up the bone white blades that once pierced him against the monster that he took them from. For the monster, the Soulless has resorted to attacking wildly, swinging its arms with great speed, trying to ram into Adrith with its head and shoulder protrusions. The monster fought wildly, and with the magic being cast from outside in, it made the fight more hectic.

Yet not a single spell touched Adrith. With the heightened magical senses he was given, he could tell where the magic was being cast, and where it was traveling. He shifted and moved constantly, anytime a spell flew near him, he shifted himself out of the way and hit the Soulless directly into the spells. Adrith constantly struck at the monster, he never gave it a moment to go onto the offensive. Every attack was layered with a defense, every strike followed a counterstrike, Adrith had fought this monster long enough.

Every strike Adrith performed did minor damage, small chips into the white armor of the monster. Yet it was much more than Evelyn saw him do before. For Adrith, he could see the countless times he hit the monster, the countless spots where he struck with the metal shards from the Revenant. Each point looked dull, stripped of some essence, and now he struck at those points.

It started with the weapons, Adrith struck them countless times, parrying, blocking, striking, he tore at them until he could give himself a moment to break them. Now Adrith took the twin blades and attacked mercilessly. Striking the arms, chest, and head, Adrith aimed with incredible precision.

More and more attacks from both Adrith and Evelyn poured down onto the Soulless, each one stripping the creature of its armor. As more and more of its protection fell, the creature began to become sluggish. Cracks began to form, as the line Adrith left on the chest of the Soulless began to deepen, and the moment Adrith struck it, it became a full break.

The Soulless at that moment seemed to shake and waver, the opening allowed Adrith and Evelyn to see within. No light came in, and nothing came out, it was an absolute abyss, and at that moment the creature then began to try and move. Adrith quickly ran at it to stab directly into the chest again, yet it shifted out of the way as it tried to turn and run. Yet Adrith was prepared, as amid the lunge, he lept and spun in the air as with the other blade in his hand he swung it and slammed it in the back of the head, forcing it to fall forward into another one of Evelyn’s spells. At this point exploded and sent the Soulless flying and slamming into the ground.

Adrith saw it fall, and lept back, he knew countless creatures that would perform post-mortem attacks that could even take out entire armies. Yet they seemed to be in the clear as the creature lay there, Adrith turned to Evelyn, checking to see how she was, he could sense she had run through quite a large portion of her energy. He let out a sigh as he turned back to the creature, as he could see the Revenant slowly moving towards the body.

The moment it reached the body, it slowly moved towards the chest where it began to move to the hole. The moment it neared it set its hand in, as the Revenant’s once red light began to lighten. The Revenant began to lose the many strange features it still had, as now all there was, was the translucent spirit of a girl, short hair, scars on her face, and a smile. She lightly gestured for Adrith and Evelyn to come near. She held a friendly energy that made it feel like seeing a friend.

The dup moved closer, curious of what was happening as the moment they did, she gestured for Adrith to set the blades into the chest. Once he did, a silvery white light began to pour out of the hole, covering the blades and the rest of the body in white light. It blinded both Adrith and Evelyn with both the power of magic and the pure white light. It took a few moments for the both of them to be able to see again as they looked back to see 2 blades, a single-handed curved blade, and a rapier.

Evelyn began to look around, and she saw no sign of the Revenant, the Soulless, or even a sign of life here. There was nothing but the blades. She looked to see Adrith had knelt and took up the blades into his hands. Lightly inspecting them before he stood up.

“I wonder who she was”, Evelyn remarked.

“Just like most others within here, just a lost soul was taken by this accursed place”, Adrith said solemnly as he then began to stumble.

Evelyn moved over to him, “You need to rest, you need to sleep to recover from those wounds”.

Adrith shook his head, “Not here”.

Evelyn pushed against Adrith, “Why not? If we go anymore you will die”.

“Because we haven’t made it out of the worst of it yet”, Adrith spoke as he nearly fell over from the push.

“You will not make it”, Evelyn then pushed him again, now aiming to make him fall over.

Adrith was many things, determined, knowledgeable, and strong. Yet what he wasn’t was unstoppable. The moment he was pushed with real force, he fell back. He had expended almost every ounce of his energy again and used the last bit of it just to ensure he did not bleed out.

“Ow-”, Adrith looked up to Evelyn as she looked down at him, he let out a sigh, “Alright, we’ll rest here”.

Evelyn nodded, “Good, then I’ll keep watch”.

Adrith nodded as he began to lay back, sighing as he began to manipulate his energy. He controlled the many points around his wounds and began to forcibly close them by twisting them with his energy.

He didn’t need to survive long, only 8 hours.

As Adrith began to sleep, Evelyn began to look around, and there she saw the multiple Revenant cores. She began to bring the cores over to her resting spot, looking at them as she wondered, what happens with these poor souls? When they use them, are they released? Or something worse?
