"So, do you think you can do it?" Damon asked Jose Rivera with a solemn expression.
The only answer he received was in the form of a light nod. Jose's eyes just flashed with numbers as he continued worldlessly staring at the terminal in front of him.
They were currently in Felicia's room, which was essentially the same as any of theirs, so there was no awkwardness. Felicia and Damon shared a look at Jose's calm response, and decided to bet on it.
Frankly, they didn't really have much of a choice. They might fail in the process, but taking this risk was better than not bothering to even try and change the fate humanity was currently heading towards. Only success would yield a positive ending for them.
"You can begin then. Use the ship's systems to invite the following to this room." Damon began listing names of those who had made it on his list of individuals possessing significant power.
Once more, the only response he received was a plain nod. Nevertheless, Damon noticed that the numbers reflected on the young man's eyes flashed even faster while the terminal in the room twitched slightly, its display looking like it was being bugged.
Jose began to sweat even as he remained stoic, his breath becoming heavy. Clearly, working on an advanced AI ship system with his Ability at the F-Stage was taking a toll on him.
However, if Damon understood the Interface Ability correctly, it wasn't one that allowed the owner to 'take over' systems, but rather one to 'commune' with them.
In other words, the Ability wasn't granting Jose a gun to threaten those systems with by putting it to their head, forcing them to submit to his will or suffer the consequences. Rather, it made the latino proficient in the language so he could try to sweet talk it into becoming his partner.
Eventually, Jose coughed and the flash disappearing, leaving behind two normal brown pupils that were slightly unfocused.
"Done."
Soon enough, the Scheming Duo heard a knock on the door, and it opened to reveal the various people they had called over. In the lead was young Xela who skipped over to Felicia and hugged her without prior warning.
"Wow, big sister Felicia, you're so pretty!" Xela exclaimed.
Felicia simply smiled gently and stroked the teenager's hair. Felicia was attractive, but her fashion sense was quite bizarre to say the least, that Damon could admit freely. However, right now was not the time to that, so he clapped his hands to garner the attention of the small group that had gathered.
"Everyone, thank you for coming here. My name is Damon Arnan, former GH politician. For the past week, I've dedicated my time to study up on the laws of this new intergalactic organization we'll be joining." Damon began as he introduced himself.
He then gestured to Felicia, who smiled slightly. "Here is Felicia, and in the same timespan she focused on researching the history and social norms of the intergalactic organization in question."
"We basically called you here because you're the strongest and most proactive among the first 100 awakened. Basically, what Felecia and I told you after the special tutorial was only the tip of the iceberg." Damon continued.
"We couldn't say too much out in the open, since we don't wish to alert Overseer Ambrose." Felicia added while stroking Xela's head.
"But thanks to Jose here, we have managed to acquire a bit of time to speak without us being spied on." Damon asserted as he clamped his palms together beneath his chin.
The fellows in the room shared looks and seemed to become more serious.
"Okay then, Mr. Politician, tell us the mojo." Henry Jasek prompted.
Damon nodded. "Basically, you all should have noticed it during the awakening process. They treated the first batch as a lucky fluke, but then they became alarmed, scared, and finally, extremely cold."
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
"At least that was the reaction of the grunts. As for the Overseer, his emotions changed from disinterested to bothered, angry, pleased, and finally excited. These attitudes contrast each other, but once you know the reason why, it all makes sense."
"Martial power from stats using the AR system doesn't really count for much, since everyone gets them. Rather, it seems powerful Abilities are the true deciding factor for everything. Essentially, this universe is ruled by the species who awaken with better Abilities than others."
Felicia took over. "The top 10 species in the universe and in the IUAS are special because they automatically awaken specific Abilities at various Grades depending on their racial quality or bloodline."
"For example, the #1 species Dragons nearly always awaken the following Abilities: SSS-Grade Element Manipulation (element in this case refers to the natal element of the Dragon itself. Blue dragon = liquid manipulation, fire dragon = heat manipulation, etc), SS-Grade Ability Immunity and S-Grade Organic Growth."
"Their Ability Immunity alone is enough to let them preside over other species, as Abilities at the S-Grade and below have zero effect on them. Abilities at the SS-Grade only deal 50% of their effect and above that is fair game."
"The #2 species are the Phoenixes, and they too awaken a set of racial Abilities by default. SS-Grade Element Manipulation (also dependent on the type of phoenix), SS-Grade Rebirth and S-Grade Mobility Superiority."
"They are second primarily because their Element Manipulation only works at 50% of its power against Dragons, and the fact that their cheat like Racial Ability, Rebirth, allows them to almost endlessly revive from death stronger than before."
Felicia paused as her smile became cold. "I am not telling you this to scare you. I am saying this so display a pattern. Species with super powerful Abilities in the majority take the top spots."
"So what do you think about humanity? While most of the 100 among us have only awakened a single Ability, not a single one of us came out with anything below the A-Grade."
"To put this into perspective, among the Top 50 species, while most have at least two Abilities, they're rarely above the B-Grade. Even the Vampires that Ambrose is part of are ranked 24th because of their Innate A-Grade Ability, Blood Control."
"Meanwhile, our Abilities ranged from A-Grade to EX-Grade, something that hardly appears in the universe. Only the leaders of special races have those kinds of Abilities, and they are few and far between."
"The current Dragon King Alexander possesses EX-Grade Heat Genesis. He doesn't control fire, he creates it. This is a step above the usual manipulation. Similarly, Dragon Queen Minerva has the EX-Grade Ability Deterrence, meaning that no Ability aside those at EX-Grade will work on her, and even EX Abilities are reduced by 50%."
"That's the Dragons at their prime, despite being the only species with almost 99% of their population awakened."
Felicia them smiled darkly and pointed to Damon and Xela then herself. "And yet, just among us 100, we already have three people with EX-Grade Abilities. And two of us have more than one."
The room became silent, as the pressure mounted. Even the calm Jose Rivera was sweating, while the jovial Henry Jasek was frowning darkly.
"Basically, what she's trying to say is that humanity has been caught in between a rock and a hard place. To summarize, we are basically the idiots who are smack dab in the center of the famous no man's land in the first world war."
"To the north is one options for us, which is to submit to a stronger species for protection, though we'll become legal slaves to our 'protectors'."
"To the south is to try and become independent, but we will eventually be crushed by the stronger forces of the universe legally, financially and spiritually."
Damon then smiled. "However, there is a chance to escape to the east and west, out of the battlefield. This option is what I've called you here to discuss with, a plan to not only become independent, but also not susceptible to pressure for a while."
The group went silent before Ektor smiled thinly. "Go ahead, we're listening."
"Basically, the plan itself is simple. I know the laws of most if not all of Earth's legal systems, so I know what legal actions we can take to protect ourselves. As most of you might know already, our own laws only seem trustworthy at first glance, but it's frighteningly easy to be twisted to serve the more powerful party most times." Damon began with a gleam in his eye.
"However, that is because the enforcer of the law is as flawed as the one the law meant to guide. A human cannot enforce laws on another human, it just won't work in the long run. The various levels of corruption throughout the world and various loopholes in the system have already prove that."
"Fortunately, we have the benefit of an impartial enforcer... the Universe Will. It is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, and completely impartial, the three perfect characteristics needed for an enforcer."
"In other words, any legal protections we take to prevent ourselves from being had will be perfectly viable." Damon finished.
"Likewise, the social protections we'll take can prevent us from slipping up and falling through the holes of the law in a way that the Universe Will cannot save us from. After all, human greed and selfishness could doom us all in these dangerous circumstances." Felicia added.
"So with that in mind, the first step of the plan to for us in this room to become united. We need to be of the same mind and of the same will to save our livelihood. Are you in agreement?"
