Planning For The Future (Again)

Planning For The Future (Again)

The recon team dared not get close enough to the meeting to hear what was being said. As far as Siobhan knew the outside world was still unaware of the sanctuary's existence. So, she ordered the recon team to do everything they could to avoid revealing themselves. This includes flying so high that they can barely make out movement on the ground. Unfortunately, Logan knows that there is a high probability that at least one soldier made it out of the slaughter. What version of events they reported back is unclear however. It all depends on exactly when they departed from their camp. From what the recon team can tell though it doesn't appear that the two sides are about to go to war although they aren't exactly on the best of terms.

Listening to the report Siobhan can only sigh, wondering if her people will ever truly be free. Even if humans did start it, how long must her people suffer for something that happened close to a thousand years ago? Even if she wanted to launch a preemptive attack the distance just won't allow it. Besides which according to Cid the sanctuary advises that she avoid provoking the enemy. Not exactly bad advice. If you aren't sure you can win. Normally she wouldn't question the sanctuaries advice, but she feels that with the sanctuaries help they can defend against any attack. She's tired of having the question of their continued survival hanging over her head. She doesn't dare go against the sanctuary though. Its advice has gotten them this far even if she feels it's a bit overprotective at times.

Logan for his part sees no benefit to directly drawing their attention. At least not yet. He is hoping to establish an understanding with the other races. Don't attack or settle near us and we won't attack you. Of course, he still wants to free any remaining human slaves. He has to find them first though. Attacking indiscriminately will only result in provoking a full-scale war. Giving them a common enemy to rally against is the last thing he wants to do. Ideally once the remaining slaves are found he'd like to do a series of small-scale surgical strikes. His hope is that once they realize only places with slaves are being attacked, they will give up their slaves voluntarily. He knows it's not likely, but he also believes that while planning for the worst you should never forget to hope for the best. Genocide of the other races was never his goal. He doesn't want to become the monster after all.

After watching them for about a week with no noticeable change the recon team reported back today that a group comprised of elves and kobolds has started out towards the sanctuary. After carefully observing their movements for another week or so, it doesn't appear as if they are coming to attack. If anything, it appears they are unaware of the sanctuary as they appear to be splitting up into several smaller groups. Each with elves and kobolds, perhaps they still don't entirely trust each other. As Logan hears the reports that they are moving towards where the old camps use to be he suddenly realizes they have no idea what happened. Based on the reports of their movement they are coming to investigate why they lost contact with their respective camps. This is better than he could have hoped, they should just wonder around for a while without finding anything and leave. After all, when they were defeated, Logan was very clear about the human army removing any trace that a camp had ever been there. Combine that with the fact that the battles were so long ago, and nature has surely reclaimed the areas by now.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

They are to spread out now for the recon team to keep an eye on everything. So, the other flying recon team is brought in to help. Watching them closely the recon teams report that they appeared to be in a bit of a panic. They seem to know that their camps are missing but are unsure how they could vanish so quickly without leaving a trace. No matter which group attacked them, be it dwarves, orcs, or goblins there should still be signs of a battle and a ruined camp. Suddenly one by one the groups start heading back the way they came. It would seem even kobold pride has its limits. In the face of an unknown threat. It appears they did exactly as Logan had hoped and decided to steer clear until the nature of the threat can be understood, or at least until a large enough force can be gathered. Either way this buys some much needed time for Logan and in turn the town to grow.

Counting the mana that he has already saved up Logan spends the next four months buying 20 southern expansions and a further 17 northern expansions. He is more determined than ever to find the edge of the town so that he can either build or repair the wall around the town. Even if they don't know what it is exactly the enemy now knows that there is something here and it is powerful. He isn't too worried at the moment. By his own calculations they shouldn't have much manpower left with which to build an army, but he is also aware that he could be very wrong about that. One possibility that does worry him a little is that they are trying to contact the goblins. With their rate of reproduction, they could easily put together a sizable force. He's not overly worried since as far as he can tell the last time goblins cooperated with anyone was nearly a thousand years ago, but he still can't ignore the possibility. He is still hopeful that an understanding can be reached that would put an end to the human persecution. However, he also understands that if it is possible such an understanding will take a while to form organically and that it cannot be rushed. The process could be speed up if they were willing to talk instead of letting the truce grow organically as an unspoken agreement but that seems unlikely.
