Book 2: Chapter 75

The next thing he wanted to do was sit down and read through his new class. He figured there was a chance his soul harvesting abilities would be upgraded by the class. Until he was certain he was going to get as much out of it as possible, he didn’t want to even start looking at the remnants of Erolan’s soul.

[D - Legendary] Reaper

The Reaper class is the final form of the Soul Harvester. This class is designed to maximize the wielder’s abilities and allow them to reap the souls of the fallen. By succeeding with the Soul Harvester class you have demonstrated an affinity for harvesting souls and shown that you don’t need a class to succeed. This class is designed to augment and amplify the natural abilities of the wielder above all else. It’s goal is not to grant new abilities and make the wielder great at them but rather to accelerate and amplify what is already there.

Note: This class comes with some required class skills.

Warning: Consuming souls that are stronger than your own could have adverse side effects.

[D - Legendary] Reaper

General Skills:

Predator’s Stealth (Epic) => Reaper’s Movement (Legendary)

Soul Harvest (Epic) => Soul Reap (Legendary)

Note: Soul Reap modified to accommodate Soul Ring.

Mana Sight (Uncommon) => Reaper’s Sense (Legendary)

Bond Familiar (Uncommon) => Reaper’s Bond (Legendary)

Innate Skills:

+ Reaper’s Mantle (Legendary)

Holy shit. Everything? Really?

Dragon’s Dance wasn’t upgraded.

Oh yeah. Still… Almost everything upgraded to Legendary skills…

Class: [Reaper’s Movement (Legendary) This skill amplifies the user’s movements in every way. If the user is moving silently it will dampen any sounds produced. If the user is moving through the shadows, it will dampen any light reflected off of them. If they are traveling quickly, they will move faster. This skill is heavily dependent on and scales with both your perception and dexterity. This skill can make you undetectable, but scales heavily based on the user’s own abilities. If they are already very stealthy, this skill will make them undetectable. This skill will not make someone who is not stealthy suddenly great at it.]

Class: [Soul Reap (Legendary) Upon slaying an enemy with a soul, and storing it in the soul ring, you may automatically have souls be harvested. Souls in the ring will be processed for a period of time that varies based on your own soul’s strength. You may currently hold (5000 common) souls in the soul ring for processing, based on it’s size. Once processed, a portion of their soul is integrated into your own granting you a portion of their stats. The gained stats are dependent on the strength of the defeated soul and your processing efficiency.]

Class: [Reaper’s Senses (Legendary) This skill augments the wielder’s vision with the inclusion of their other senses. Mana, souls, heat, smells and anything else the user can sense will be amplified. This skill also amplifies your senses to be more attuned to the world around you. This skill heavily scales on the user’s perception. This skill will not reveal anything that the user cannot detect on their own.]

Class: [Reaper’s Bond (Legendary) Bond with a creature to gain effects dependent on the creature. The strength of your bond with the creature and the level of the creature affect the strength of the effects you gain. Large level differentials could result in a bond breaking entirely. You and the creature will affect each others advancements. The bonded creature will also benefit from the user’s reaper skills, if applicable.]

Innate: [Reaper’s Mantle (Legendary) This skill is innate to your class. The reaper’s mantle is a black cloak that is both an item and a part of the user. It can be equipped and stowed at will and it’s abilities and stats are dependent on the user. The mantle can also reap the effects of other cloaks to replicate them at will. The mantle may be manually modified to use a different material, be enchanted or even decorated based on what it has been fed. All modifications become a part of the cloak. Upon destruction, the cloak may be resummoned so long as the user remains alive. It’s durability scales with the user’s endurance and the other cloaks it has reaped. The Reaper’s Mantle covers both the user’s body and head by default but may be modified. This skill will not circumvent standard enchantment interference.]

Huh. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining… but other than the bond skill… these kind of suck, no?

Yeah, kind of.

They don’t actually let me do anything new or cool. They just… amplify things? If I suck at stealth, that skill isn’t going to do anything.

Yeah, guess you’re going to have to learn how to be stealthy then.

Why the hell are they Legendary the- don’t answer, I know. It’s cause of their cap.

That’s my guess at least.

So I just need to get there then. To the cap?

Isn’t that what you wanted to do anyways?

No. Sort of? Not everything. I had no plans on being the best at hand to hand combat or stealth. I’m never going to be the best with an axe. Stealth does sound useful though so I’m not opposed to that one. I just want to learn enough of everything to have options. I want the chance to react and respond and not be caught off guard by something I’ve never seen before.

Felix made sure the Soul Reap skill was deactivated so he could take a look at manual soul harvesting first then activated his Reaper’s Mantle skill. As soon as he did, a cloak that seemed to be made of either shadow or black smoke appeared on Felix’s shoulders. It took him a few seconds to realize it had appeared though because it weighed nothing so he didn’t feel it at all.

He tested it out and found that it was incredibly fragile and essentially provided nothing of value other than aesthetics at the moment. He assumed it would become incredibly useful once he upgraded it, but for now it was essentially a costume. He deactivated the skill because he didn’t want to walk around with a trail of shadows behind him.

Felix was about to start working on Soul Harvesting, or Reaping but was interrupted by a system screen.

World Event

The first ever Trenus World Event is now complete. All participants that survived have returned and the bonus rewards for the final vault and the battle with Erolan’s pet will now be distributed.

Stats:

Deaths: 376

Total Damage Dealt: 42.34 Billion

Total Damage Taken: 4.70 Million

Participants: 7,841

Final Vault Rewards:

100 Billion Credits x Participation (0.5%) = 500 Million Credits

I take it that was Nova’s participation?

Probably. Makes sense it’s so high… given its level compared to everyone else.

Auction

With the first ever Trenus World Event complete, there will be an auction held in 24 hours. This auction will be open for anyone who participated in the World Event along with one guest each. You will be allowed to post any items you found in the world event as well as anything else you wish to auction off, with some restrictions. There will also be other items available for purchase that have been tailored based on prominent participants, cities and their needs.

24 hours? That’s it?

As much as Felix wanted to get started on Soul Reaping and Erolan’s soul, now that everyone was back and there was an auction in 24 hours, he had other things he had to get sorted first.

The first thing Felix did was teleport back to Atalus. It hadn’t quite been a day since his last teleport but the reset time for it had passed so it worked without issue. He immediately found himself on the steps to the main building, as expected, and walked inside.

All around him and the building stood the crowd of people that had just participated in the event. They had all reappeared where they had left and though a lot of them had scurried off back into the city, a good number of them were loitering about and sharing stories with each-other. Felix paid them no mind and walked straight into the main building.

He wanted to make sure he caught everyone he needed to talk to and luckily, it seemed no one had left yet. Felix walked over to Noah who was standing next to Amelia and talking with Benjamin. He had no intention of interrupting them and was happy to wait until they finished but Noah noticed Felix as soon as he approached and turned to him.

“Felix. We were wondering if you had died in one of the vaults.”

“Really?”

“Nah, I can see your status through some city management stuff so I know you didn’t die.”

“Oh.”

“You did miss the big surprise.”

“What was that?”

“Remember Silas?”

“The leader of Lav’Gur? The guy who replaced Ashok and tried to make himself leader of the world?”

“Yeah, exactly. He tried to kill all of us… Was interesting.”

“Wait, what?”

“It’s not as big a deal as it sounds. Wasn’t really a very well thought out plan. He just tried to betray us during the big fight. Might have worked had Amani not seen right through it.”

“Oh, that’s good. What… did he do?”

“Tried to lay traps so we ‘tragically’ got caught in them and died to Erolan’s pet. Had some of his city’s residents helping him too. Amani noticed Silas acting weirdly then put everything together. She found and then quickly cleared out all most of the traps.”

“Oh, glad to hear it all worked out. What about Silas?”

“Oh he died. Accidentally got caught by Erolan’s pet as he tried to run away.”

“So what happens to Lav’Gur now?”

“Good question. Probably someone else claims power. Hopefully they aren’t as self righteous.”

“I see. What was Erolan’s pet anyways?”

“Some creature called a Ralmeran. Or… maybe that was it’s name? Not sure. Think massive monkey like thing with three heads, six legs and hundreds of hard, scaled tentacles. The tentacles burrowed through the ground like roots and caught people unaware.”

“I’m actually having a hard time imagining what that looks like.”

“Guess you would have had to see it. I take it you found something better to do than help with Erolan’s pet?”

“Yeah, sort of. Sorry, I know you probably wanted me there to help…”

Noah shrugged, “Don’t worry about it.”

“You’re not mad?”

Noah sighed then put his hand on Felix’s shoulder “Look I… I’ve come around on the issue, at least on a small part of it. I was mad for a while but… I told Amelia about it, more to rant than anything but much to my chagrin, she kind of agreed with you, not fully but, still. I get it now, I know I can’t shoulder the lives of everyone in the city. Especially now, in the multiverse, people die and I just need to accept that. I know you can’t just always be there and people need to be capable of handling themself.”

Noah looked into Felix’s eyes with intensity and his grip on Felix’s shoulder tightened, “What I will do though and what you should have done, is make sure the innocent and those who don’t want to fight, don’t have to. If they are willing to accept the danger, then so be it, but everyone else, they deserve to be protected. If we had lost the war, what would have happened to the innocents, the ones in the bunkers?”

Felix just nodded along solemnly, he knew this was an emotional issue for Noah, “You’re saying I didn’t have to participate in the war and baby the citizens, but if we had lost, I should have protected them? Helped them escape? Or even provided safe haven for anyone that didn’t want to fight?”

Noah shrugged, “Something like that. If you don’t want to stand and defend the city, I don’t agree with that decision, but we have a right to know that. Then if we decide to fight for it ourselves, that’s on us. You lied to the people of the city and pretended you were helping. What if some people only fought because they thought their fearless protector was there to lead the charge and… protect them?”

“That’s not unreasonable. I get my decision… what I did… not taking out their siege weapons and essentially forcing the war on the city, I know most people would think of me as a psychopath. The way I see it though, the city is battle hardened and capable. They’re as ready as they can be to defend themselves if the need arises.”

“That’s… I get what you’re saying but… A lot of people died that didn’t have to. You totally could have had people fight and train then swooped in and saved them if they were about to die.”

Felix sighed, “Yeah but without the threat of death… is it really proper training for…” Felix gestured around him, “everything else?”

“That’s… idiotic”

Felix shrugged, “Idiotic or psychopathic?”

Noah winced, “Maybe not idiotic… definitely… misanthropic?”

Felix slumped his shoulders, “Sure… As I said, I can’t always be there though, even more so now. Maybe we should think up more escape options.”

Noah frowned, “What do you mean ‘even more so now?’”

Felix looked at Noah with a very serious expression, “Look, some shit happened and we should probably talk about it before the auction.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
