Chapter 4: Through the Lab Again

Chapter 4: Through the Lab Again

"How is she alive?! She needs the life elixir." Pulse was currently panicking and scrambling to pull a large bottle with red liquid out for the girl drenched in fractal guts bleeding out. The broken leg, arm, and visible ribs did little to help Pulse's anxiety.

Pulse couldn't see the girls skin or blood underneath the thick layer of fractal guts, but what she could see was the fractal blood absorbing her blood and bubbling.

"Honey, you'll kill her if you give her something for Saints. Give her angel's kiss that Echo gave you, It will stop the absorption and any internal bleeding." A tiny figure of a woman sitting Pulse's shoulder was just as worried for the girl but was keeping herself together.

She had long blonde hair and accompanying wolf ears, with a halo floating lazily above her head. Her eyes were glowing pink orbs, and a black suit and pants, and a metronome sat in her chest, ticking away.

"Met, what's angel's kiss?" Pulse dropped the large bottle and reached into Met, and pulled out a bulky mechanical mask and placed it on the girls mouth. She pressed the mask down, activating it. Loud hissing emanated from it as it wrapped a strap around the girls head, securing it to her mouth.

"Angel's kiss is something used to put critical patients into a loose stasis for a prolonged healing method or until better options arrive." Met let out a sigh of relief that they made it in time.

The mask started to hum and glow as the bubbling slowed down to nothing very quickly. The broken bones all over her body, on the other hand, did not get better. "Wow, her body is really receptive to it. I've never seen angel's kiss work this fast! Now, all that's left is putting the bones in place so they can heal."

Pulse cringed at the broken bones and forced her vomit down. "Do I need to?"

"If you don't want her to a cripple, then yes, Honey." Met felt bad for Pulse since she gets really squeamish when she sees people with broken limbs.

Pulse was about to try when Echo ran in and slid to a stop in front of the guillotine with a dead fractal in it and then looked to the pulse. "What happened here?"

Pulse turned around and gasped at the blade hound. "Um, I'm pretty sure she did it. Oh! Ec, can you set her bones?"

Echo was confused until she noticed the girl with a mutilated rib cage, broken leg, and arm. "Oh Rama, what happened happened to you?"

"When we found her, she was being crushed by a sluke." Met looked the girl over and realized she was in surprisingly good shape.

"She should be dead, Met. Those hold on with enough force to crush adult orcs even if you decapitate them." Echo set the girl's arm and leg with little effort. Her gaze landed on the mask firmly latched to her face.

"You gave her angel's kiss. Her life won't be in danger while she is wearing it, but we need to figure out what later..." Echo turned her attention to the girls chest that had a rib protruding out of it. The fractal guts covering her disappeared and reappeared across the room.

"W-what is this?" Echo and Pulse were shocked by her ash grey skin that was absolutely littered with bruises and cuts, and one of her legs almost didn't have any skin left.

Echo immediately shook her shock away and reached into her trench coat, pulled out a glowing thread and needle, and proceeded to stitch wounds closed. "I haven't seen this shade of grey skin before? Is she a vampire? Zombie? Ghoul?"

"But Ec, look, she has wolfen ears? But no tail?" The girls blood red bob cut hair and wolf ears with silver tufts of hair in them was spattered with what looked like white paint.

"Anyways, I always hated this part. You should look away, Pulse." Echo counted 11 broken ribs out of place and took a deep breath, and with a steady hand, she grabbed the rib and slipped her hand into the girls chest.

"Wha-Urp!" Pulse turned away and threw up at Echos sudden action.

Echo finished putting the ribs back in place quickly and pulled her hand as the girls white blood shimmered, trickled down her hand, and turned to Met with concern. "Um... Have you seen this before?"

"White? No race I'm aware of has that color blood. It's glowing, too..." Met and Echo shared a glance before she went back to comforting Pulse.

Echo stitched the hole she made closed, and a first aid kit hanging from her shoulder caught her attention due to the papers sticking out of it. She reached over to start reading through it. "Pulse, can you give her one of your hoodies?"

Pulse wiped her mouth clean and nodded. She reached into Met again and pulled a pink hoodie with a holographic design of herself, and slid it on the girl. *Cough* "Why was she naked, though?"

"I don't think it's for a good reason. Look at where we are, Hon." Met gestured to guillotine as Echo shoved the papers she read into her jacket.

Echo had a scowl on her face that only got deeper with each page she read. "I'm going to retrace her steps."

"W-wait, you have the long-range radio! aaaand she's gone." Pulse glanced between the girl and the door, conflicted.

Met could feel something was wrong. "You should follow Echo with the girl."

"Is that safe? What if a fractal-" Pulse grabbed the bottle she dropped. Met slapped her shoulder. "Then get going! Echo much stronger than you anyway."

Pulse picked her up in a princess carry and followed after Echo.

Echo was following a trail of white and red footprints as they in and out rooms. Rama, she walked for so long... with those injuries?

I should tell him. Echo pulled out her communicator and contacted GoldenWing.

"Echo? Why are you calling? You never call unless it's bad... Did they die?" GoldenWing's trepidation was evident. He never wanted to call someone's family to deliver that news again.

Echo stepped into a dark room and saw 2 canary fractals, one of which had large a bite taken out of its skull. "Night lord Rama... No, but she was in bad enough shape. we put angel's kiss on her, but that's not why I'm notifying you."

GoldenWing was relieved but remembered she wasn't done talking. "Then?"

Echo walked over to a box labeled FC3 and bit her lip in frustration as she stared at an even smaller boy with his eyes gouged out. "I think we found a sentient experiment laboratory, and the girl we found is probably tube grown."

GoldenWing went silent as Echo turned to a pool of the girl's blood and a discarded mag stim. She pocketed the stim and turned away. "She looks like a young girl, maybe 9 to 13, but we haven't been able to identify her race."

Echo left room and continued following the tracks as rage was building in her heart. "She grabbed some papers, and I looked through them. It's a demented experiment log, but nothing helpful in terms of why they did this... The little girl has killed a few fractals by herself."

"She wha-" GoldenWing voice cut off abruptly, causing Echo to tap her communicator annoyed.

"Damn thing always run out of mana." Echo glanced to their party link and saw that they were fine, so she wasn't concerned about them. She glanced back and saw Pulse following after her while avoiding jostling the girl she was carrying.

Pulse walked up to Echo and saw the communicator in her hand. "Did you find anything?"

Echo put the device away and ruffled the girl's hair. "This little monster can bite through a canarys skull and was smart enough to use a mag stim."

Met frowned at the word monster. "Why would you call her that?"

"I believe she's a person they made her here." Echo scratched the girls ears, and she let out muffled purr in response. Cute~ wait, how? She should be out cold.

Pulse held the girl closer. "You're not going to ask to abandon her, right?"

Echo gave Pulse a hurt look. "Why would I say that? What do you take me for, Poli? I might have to raise her."

Met and Pulse shared a shocked look before shutting up.

They saw another place where Echo assumed she did first aid on herself and nearby was a dead fractal with a microscope lodged in its head, so Met and Pulse agreed.

Pulse and Echo rounded a corner and took a step back when they saw a hallway coated in blood and corpses. "D-do, you think she did this?"

Met looked over them for a bit and shook her head. "No, these were done by piston spiders and blade hounds."

They walk past and into a room with two blade hound victims.

Pulse stepped on something and almost tripped. She looked down and saw the remains of a flask with a rubber stopper with a mark of a broken monocle on it. "Met, what is this? It has something strange on it."

"That's a mana sealed cork, I've never seen that seal..." Met memorized the symbol and looked over to Echo, who started digging through the notes.

Pulse walked around the room a bit more and stopped next to the box where the girl woke up. She noticed an inscription on the box. "Hey, this crate is labeled FC6. Is that important?"

"That what they call her in these notes, and I found a boy that looked similar to her in one labeled FC3." Echo talked

"Where's the boy?" Pulse voiced her concern but was met with silence.

"Hon, you didn't detect anyone else." Met could see Echo was angry, just not at Pulse.

"What do you... Oh." Pulse sat down with the girl and waited in silence.

The next half-hour passed with just the noise of rustling papers when Echo stopped on a blood-stained paper and read it aloud. "-Inducing ego death in FC6 has been difficult due to a strong emotional link to a memory prior to acquisition- -amnesia was suggested as- -should be ready by..."

Pulse flinched when Echo punched a table in half. "Ec, what does that mean?"

Echo turned to the girl as she clenched her teeth. "I was wrong... She's someone they abducted and changed her to an extent we don't even know what race she was. Hell, she could have been a he!"

Pulse felt the girl stir and saw that her eyes were fluttering open. "Oh! I think she's waking up."

The girl locked eyes with Echo. Her eyes were a swirling mess of gold and blood with a black slit in the center acting as the pupils.

She flipped out of Pulse's grip and backed up to a wall as she frantically looked around the room. She tried to tear the mask off, but it didn't budge. "Hmm rag yu?!"

Pulse could see she was about to panic, so she raised her hands and spoke as soft as she could. "It's alright, It's alright. I'm Pulse, and this is Echo. We're Saints, we found you hurt, so we put that you on so you didn't bleed out."

The girl was about to calm down when she stumbled forward, and Pulse instinctively went to catch her.

The girl caught herself and let out a loud muted hiss at the approaching Pulse before she bolted out of the room with shocking speed.

"...Did she just hiss at me?" Pulse and Echo were dumbfounded at the situation.

*Ding* The entire full moon party got a quest, which wasn't rare, but it was unusual to get one in fractures outside of extreme situations.

Echo rushed to finish skimming over and grabbing all of the documents and put them in her coat as she debated what to do, but she never considered rejecting as a choice. "Should we let her run for a bit? She would freak out more if we chased her immediately."

Pulse tilted her head. "Poison? Where did she get poisoned?!"

Met looked between Pulse and Echo. "That doesn't matter now! We need to get angel's kiss off her. She'll be in a constant state of delirium since It won't let her body fight that poison off and not mention if her body rejects it due to her having a panic attack she'll die!"

"Why wouldn't she take it off?" Pulse's got up and got ready to leave.

"She can't take that angel's kiss off. Only full moon has the bio key, and we'll need to have forced healing ready." Met was trying to think of something helpful.

Pulse turned to Met with shock. "What do you mean!? Why doesn't it have failsafe for something like this!?"

Met shifted on Pulse's shoulder anxiously as she read the quest details. "Angel's kiss has a strong enough sedative that even dragons would pass out, so we didn't even think someone could wake, let alone run away with it still on. And I fear this is more than just getting her medical attention."

"Yeah, why would it say get to safety?... Dammit!" Echo ran out and after the girl followed closely behind by Pulse. In her hand was a paper mentioning that their personnel would be sent to get rid of any evidence in the event of this place being breached.
