Chris's body trembled and his mind went blank as he saw the woman's image on the screen.
'Ellie'
He couldn't believe the girl who would become one of his future girlfriends had died before the portals appeared in this world.
The news was covering the bizarre murder in which the corpses were discovered with their throats slit and no one knew who had done it.
Tears welled up in the corners of his eyes as a scene from his previous life flashed before his eyes.
He had shared many unforgettable moments with her, particularly the one in which she went so far as to sacrifice herself to save his life.
He believed that once everything began, he would never let her suffer in her life. But she died before he could meet her?
"Chris, what happened?" His body trembled as he heard his mother's voice rushing toward him.
He turned around to see his mother approaching him and looking at him with concern on her face.
But his mind was not responding properly; instead, it was recalling all of the memories he had with her.
His mother turned to look at the television, where a news report was being shown.
She fell silent for a while before sighing, "Poor Child" before she turned to look at him.
"You know her?" She asked as she stared at him.
Chris nodded dully and closed his eyes.
"She was my friend." He replied and slumped on the couch.
His mother shook her head and stared at him with pity in her eyes. "Don't think too much, Chris. What could you do? But you have to be careful. The cities are not safe nowadays."
His father also came and patted his shoulders, "Buck up, kid,"
Chris gave a weak smile and looked at his parents for a moment before nodding.
His parents eventually returned to their rooms, but Chris remained seated on the sofa, his gaze fixed on the television. But his mind was recalling something.
Ellie had previously told him about her life experiences. She also told him about the incident in which she was cornered by a group of hooligans, and one man died to save her.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
She was almost raped at the time, but luckily, patrolling police arrived on time and saved her.
Chris closed his eyes and frowned.
This time, instead of being saved, Ellie was murdered alongside the hooligans, but that man was nowhere to be found in the news.
'What has changed this time?' 'What was the name of the person who was killed?' He became suspicious of the man unknowingly.
He was struggling to recall the instances when Ellie mentioned the name of the man who was killed by hooligans.
Suddenly, a hazy memory surfaced in his mind. It was before the world changed. Yes, just like before, the news covered the murder of someone attempting to save the girl. And the girl's name was Ellie.
"Jake. It's Jake." He almost shouted and punched the sofa hard.
But he frowned once more. He could only recall the person's name, but he couldn't recall the man's face.
A long sigh escaped his lips, and he stood up, but many worries began to surface in his mind.
'How could the past change?'
His entire confidence stems from his belief that he has regressed to the past and knows a lot about the future, which will help him rise to the top.
But some factor has affected the timeline.
His mind was in a daze for a while before a determined look flashed across his face.
He has to get to the bottom of this. Not just for the sake of vengeance, but also for his future. What if the future would changed as a result of this single event?
He realized that the man named Jake would be the deciding factor in the future. And, for the sake of his future, he must eliminate this threat as soon as possible.
His fists clenched as he rushed into his room and sat in front of his computer.
.................
North Mark Hospital, Logan City.
Jake had only just opened his eyes when he turned to look to his side and noticed a middle-aged man dressed in a black uniform sitting on the chair. He had a square face and a thin, grey beard that covered his entire face. His grey hair was neatly combed back, he held a notebook in his hand, and his solemn eyes were fixed on him.
As he stared at the man sitting beside the bed, Jake's eyes were filled with confusion. But he was aware of what was going on.
His sudden appearance in the pathetic state would have alerted the police officials.
After noticing that Jake has opened his eyes, the middle-aged man sat straight and said.
"Mr. Jake Miller, my name is Aaron Fisher, and I am the Captain of the Logan City Police Department."
"I understand that now is not the time to ask any questions. However, the situation is somewhat urgent. Please cooperate with me."
"Just answer a few of my questions honestly."
Jake said nothing and just stared at Aaron without blinking.
Aaron felt somewhat uneasy with that stare. He cleared his throat and glanced at the notepad in his hands before looking at Jake.
"Jake Miller, 26, Marketing Consultant, Infinity Corp., Single Child Both parents died in an accident two years ago."
Jake didn't say anything, he just stared at Aaron.
But the Police officer continued.
"On the night of July 29th, you appeared in front of the Hospital with four stab wounds in your stomach, and your body was critically injured."
He took a breather before asking, "Could you tell me about what happened to you? Why were you so severely injured?"
Jake's eyes glinted briefly before he shook his head slowly and frowned.
"I...I am sorry, officer. I don't remember anything."
"When I opened my eyes, I found myself in this place. I don't remember what happened to me."
A bitter smile appeared on his face as he closed his eyes.
"Would you believe me, officer? If I say, I don't remember anything. My brain hurts every time I try to remember something."
He looked up and stared directly into the officer's eyes, saying in a slight, commanding tone.
"Would you believe me, officer?"
