When Jeff woke up he found himself facing the biggest bed he had ever been in butt naked. Seeing the light blue glow, he slowly reached over to it and tapped it to brighten the room up again, finding he slept on a set of clothing set out for him. Feeling a little embarrassed, but more shameless, he soon bolted toward the bathroom to relieve himself, and wash up again, just so he can wake up faster.
When he left, he dressed in the provided simple pants and a shirt and found a new note left on the kitchen table. This one had a list of breakfast items. Feeling less extravagant than the night before, he settles on some eggs and toast with ham strips and fresh milk. Giving the middle rope a tug, he got on a call to one of the staff to place his order. He was writing in his new journal when the bell over his door rang.
“ Come in.”
Jeff could only stare as what could be described as an eight-foot lizard person with wings and an equally long tail pushed a food cart into the room and started setting the table. When she was done she looked at him and bowed slightly.
“ Will that be all, sir?”
Jeff took a moment to pick up his jaw from the floor before stopping himself from dismissing her.
“ Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
“ I will not sleep you...”
Jeff’s mind goes blank for a moment contemplating the statement.
“ I... ah... meant your name, or... well more about this world...”
This time it was her turn to be slightly taken back.
“ Oh, apologies good sir. It just, the last three I attended to lead with...”
“ Fuck me?”
“ In the literal context, not the ironic one.”
Jeff takes a moment to think before standing from the desk and moving to the food. When he sat back down he looked at her and cleared his throat.
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
“ Sorry, I just never...”
She nods in a certain understanding.
“ I get the surprised look a lot in human lands. Not many of my people venture this far south.”
“ Ah, so... your name?”
“ Apologies, sir, my name is Xilna. I hail from the Everyburning Peek, which is in the Dragon Lands, on the northern reaches of the continent. Do you wish for a full geography lesson?”
Jeff thought about it as he took a bit of ham and egg on a fork and bit into it before leaning back again. After the bite, he had his answer.
“ I think a book about it, and about a bunch of stuff, if they are available would be nice. So why are you so far south?”
“ Well, there is a long version of the story, but you get the short one. I got drunk and gambled too much. Mom bought my debts and sent me here to work it off.”
After another bite, he looks at her.
“ And what were you before a maid?”
“ Oh, the maid is one of my secondary classes. This will be explained later by a tutor, but in short, my main class is swordsman and my first secondary is medic, so I can treat my own injuries. I got my maid class when I started working for the Duke. Since my mother is a close friend of his.”
“ That... um... neat. What else can you tell me about secondary classes?”
“ Secondary classes normally have rapid growth but are temporary. For example, my maid sub-class is determined by my having this job as a maid. By the way, I will only have it for another month. Then I get to go home.”
Jeff thought some more as he nibbled on some toast and decided he did not have more questions for her, but definitely had more questions.
“ Thanks for your time, if I could borrow a few books about common sense things I am sure were prepared, I would appreciate it... Also before you go, will I be seeing you again?”
Xilna nods.
“ Of course, we are assigned to you Champions for the duration of your stay, or in my case my employment. That is unless I do not like the attitude of the attendee. Which I think I will not change right away. You have been very courteous despite my uniqueness and stature.”
“ Thanks... I guess... Anyways, if you can get those books, I should be done when you come back. I do not imagine I will need you till dinner afterward.”
“ Of course, sir. If you need me beforehand just call with the middle rope.”
After that, she took her trolley and left. Only to return later with about a dozen books. Taking the emptied plates, then leaving again. Deciding the seat at the desk was far more comfortable, he moves the books over there and opens the one labeled ‘Recent History’.
In short, the demons appeared about eighty years ago from some kind of rift in space. Back then only one appeared every other day. Ultimately, it became an adventurer farm for the experience. Unfortunately, after a few years of easy farming, someone finally died. The others killed the demon and everything seemed to be fine... until the next day, the second demon wiped out the farming party in a surprise attack. Then ran rampant in a small village and the farmlands before they were ultimately stopped by a soldier patrol. From there the adventurers sent a more powerful team to contain the tear, unfortunately, they did not learn about the second one opening till days later. From there it just snowballed. Quickly turning from hundreds to tens of thousands within weeks.
Forty years ago, the reborn hero at the time, was raised from an infant. Left to seal the demon lands for good. He was initially successful until he was ambushed, cut off from his supply line, and eventually overcome by numbers and exhaustion.
Twenty years ago, a party of six heroes was summoned alive, very important to note that, and told their woes. Two of them became crafters, originally supporting the war effort.
About fifteen years ago when they started competing against each other for power and profit over the war effort. Leading to a lack of crucial supply failures during a critical operation to retake a strategic chokepoint. Leading to the swordsman, archer, and healer heroes to perish. Leaving the mage behind. Later she constructed a magical tower at that chokepoint and the swordsman hero, her brother, son live with her and a small army. Cursing the name of the two crafters for their egos and greed.
