Pilot's Resolution

In hindsight, Pilot realized there wasn't much of a reason why he even bothered to go to sleep.

He laid there for what seemed like ages, just contemplating how he should go about life, when sleep finally claimed him.

Pilot woke up with a start when he heard someone shouting his name. He quickly scrambled up from the floor of the hollow tree and looked around frantically. There were trees everywhere, towering in front of him and behind him, while above him he noticed a faint greenish tint to the sky.

The trees blocked out any light that managed to shine through, making everything look pitch black. There was also a breeze. It made it so hard for Pilot to distinguish anything other than the sounds of nature. He strained his eyes and ears for the source of the voices but all he caught was the sound of rustling foliage. He turned in circles, trying to find whoever was calling him.

"Good morning, Pilot," Fawn smiled.

"You just left me in that stupid tree all night, and now you just call me good morning? What kind of greeting is that? That means you're done with our little experiment." He scowled.

"I am so sorry Pilot about this all, but you are needed," She said softly, looking apologetic.

She opened her arms wide, inviting him in with a warm and welcoming hug. Pilot hesitated and took several steps forward until he was standing right in front of Fawn who pulled him closer to her. She gently wrapped her arms around his waist.

'This isn't weird?' Pilot thought, still unsure of why she wanted to be close to him.

Pilot slowly put his arms around her shoulders as he rested his head on hers. He was surprised at how natural it felt to be in such a warm embrace.

"Do you know what I need from you?" She whispered.

"What?" He asked.

"I need you to take on our burden of this world as we made a problem so please do not be one for us too," She explained.

"Burden…?"

"You were being tested to check infinity of your ability and if you could really survive," She explained.

"Y-You were gonna really kill me?!" He shouted.

"There was no way to ensure your survival otherwise; therefore the test was successful. Now please listen and do what I say without question because I know the consequences may be harsh,"

She looked deeply into his eyes and stared long and hard before she broke eye contact and moved away slightly.

"Please follow me..."

He lagged behind to the opening of the woods that surrounded the clearing. Fawn walked through with Pilot following closely behind. Suddenly they both heard someone else calling their names.

"Oh," Pilot muttered.

"From here out I can not help you Pilot,"

She ushered him inside for gnarled branches intertwined building a wall so he could not leave. . He could hear a distant rumble and the sounds of fighting and screaming in the distance, and soon after that a dark figure flew in to the clearing.

Pilot became scared realizing how scared he was in his new reality and how fragile his situation was. It was difficult for him to understand how he could possibly survive, let along think of what he should do next.

His hair looked greasy, his eyebrows stuck together, and his skin was pale and sickly looking. He seemed very frail and fragile. Like any second, he might collapse on top of Pilot. The stranger reached out for Pilot's forehead, causing Pilot to flinch.

He grabbed Pilot's wrist and looked back into his eyes intensely. Pilot froze.

"Why are you afraid of me Pilot? Why do you run so far away? Who are you?"

The stranger asked Pilot with complete confusion in his eyes.

"Who are you?" He asked again.

"How do you know my name?" Pilot asked.

The person grinned widely revealing rows of teeth filled with sharp points. Pilot shivered at the man's grin, thinking what it would mean if that man snapped those teeth together and bit his neck. He didn't want to know, so he kept quiet. The stranger raised an eyebrow and looked at Pilot's face.

"I could feel your vibrations now that you have awakened…"

Pilot jumped at the sudden revelation. The stranger paused for a moment before shaking his head and laughing at how dumb he must seem.

"Don't be scared Pilot… This whole forest has been searching for new fresh blood… To find you they used your power to track you down…" Pilot gulped and backed away as the stranger continued speaking.

"We will save you from this place and bring you home,"

Pilot stared intently into his eyes, listening carefully to what he was saying. The stranger continued talking, but Pilot's mind drifted somewhere else. He thought of his family, his friends, and the girl he loved.

"I am not going anywhere if that is the case!" Pilot yelled.

He spread his legs placing his index fingers to his temples angrily as he tried to push his thoughts aside.

"What? You aren't going with us?" The man asked puzzled.

He stared at Pilot with pure surprise written on his features as he placed his hands on his hips.

"Of course I'm not coming with you! Where are you taking me? How is this safe?" He shouted.

"Death awaits a gifted human from another world! Your flesh will be wonderful roasted on a fire!" He exclaimed excitedly.

"Minds Arrow!" Pilot yelled.

Nothing happened as he shouted the name, not even a single spark appeared. Pilot lowered his hand and shook his head angrily, "No use, the only thing Minds Arrow does is give my body horrible headaches."

The man frowned in disappointment as if it were disappointing news to him. He looked around and sighed before lunging at Pilot as he pulled out a concealed weapon. He raised the knife above his head with an evil grin on his face. Before Pilot could react the blade pierced him between his ribs and a stream of blood shot out. It dripped off the edge of the knife leaving a trail of red as it fell on the floor below. Pilot gasped as he stumbled backwards.

"Help!" He cried out pathetically "Help!" He cried out pathetically, holding onto his bleeding wound.

The stranger stared at him with shock before he laughed maniacally and pointed a finger at him.

"That is all you got?!"

He lunged at Pilot who was unable to dodge as his legs gave out beneath him. The stranger gripped his throat tightly, squeezing the wind out of Pilot.

"I will show you what happens to those who defy death. Prepare yourself Pilot," He chuckled.

The stranger squeezed harder until he heard nothing except for his loud breathing, then suddenly released him from his grip. Pilot collapsed on the floor

The swing of a large weapon could be heard and felt separating Pilot and his killer. Pilot could barely see the item sweep through the air as the person was so fast As the person drew closer to him, Pilot realized it was a massive ax. The blade was glowing with white electricity sparking every time its edge passed over his body.

"Hey! Misfit, you need to get the hell out of here!" The man shouted.

Pilot was horrified as he noticed the man's skin like it had been sewn together with some sort of black string while his face was covered in cuts and bruises as well.

Pilot watched in shock as the man lifted his ax high in the air, preparing to strike Pilot's attacker. The other creature stood ready to fight, but instead of striking the ax, it dove sideways toward him and knocked him to the ground.

The boy saw the other man punch the first man repeatedly in his stomach repeatedly, knocking the wind out of him. Pilot watched as the other assailant crawled backward as his partner attacked him again and again.

"I said run you idiot!" He yelled.

Sandy haired boy turn and ran to notice in front of them was a million eyes staring back at them blocking them from moving or escaping. They began circling around him in a circle, blocking all escape routes. The boy could not move as the group advanced towards him. Suddenly, Pilot saw two figures running toward them, and he recognized them immediately: it was Fawn and another man flying toward them.

"I thought you said you couldn't help me anymore!" Pilot argued.

"I am slightly lying, but also I know what's going on with your powers!" She smiled.

A giant explosion could be seen in the distance and the group watched as the earth shook from the force of the blast. It was close enough for them to see the flames engulfing everything in sight; it burned bright and quickly engulfed everything.

"The tree protected your scent and now you are out and about! We need to patch you up before you leave here or you will die before you get a chance to go after dark Caym!" Fawn's friend explained.

"Dark Caym?" Pilot responded.

"He was a human just like you, but his heart was offered to lurking beings hence why we was checking your ability…" He said.

Fawn placed her hand over his injury and blood as she healed him. The the pain was immense, especially considering it was an organ that could never regenerate, however the blood that was flowing from his wounds stopped before she finished healing his injury. He could still feel the burning sensation where the knife made contact with his side.

Fawn glanced up at him.

"It isn't too late. We could go back to the city, there's no reason for us to stay in these woods," she reassured him.

He shook his head, "I have always been a coward…if I leave now then it's no better than the times I turn my back on my folks…"

Pilot recalled why he left to New York in the first place;he secretly wanted this adventure, but he found himself lost without direction, without purpose, and without friends. Now that he knew he didn't belong there, being separated from everyone he cared about, he knew it was pointless for him to return.

"I am staying Fawn!"
