Chapter 10- The Dao is Endless

Despite understanding fully the futility of such an action Cael nevertheless made sure to stand slightly further away than his two peers. As he stepped back he was able to better see that his friends were performing some sort of silent communication with their eyes the exact meaning however was lost on him.

Their hidden conversation most likely concluded as Alex smiled while Yuna sighed and stepped forward. From his perspective she seemed to be walking with a clear purpose in mind, all the while looking as though she would not hesitate to beat the first person who got in her way.

Stopping before the throne Yuna looked up at the Emperor and spoke disregarding anything he may have wanted to say as if he was nothing more than a particularly annoying bug.

『My name is Yuna Miyuki and I refuse this request, regardless of anything you say I will not change my mind.』

Such blunt rudeness was not something often seen from the rule obsessed class president and as such even Cael was somewhat taken aback by her unyielding attitude. Though he was not the only one who reacted strongly as the until now statuesque four-eyes turned to open his mouth in rebuke.

『Even if we have wronged you, such disrespect for His Majesty is unacceptable. If you apologise now we can overlook such a thing especially for a person as skilled as yourself. Out of all those summoned you are the only one already versed in the sword and we could use someone like that in the coming times ahead.』

Cael did not know Yuna could use a sword but he supposed it made a sort of sense what with her father being a yakuza and all.

『Versed in the sword, am I? I wonder how you came to that conclusion.』

After adjusting her specs Yuna’s natural born glare intensified three-fold as she faced off against her senpai in the dao of glasses.

Taking her words as a challenge four-eyes pushed up his own frames and formed a disgusting smirk that would make just about anyone want to strike their face and continued.

『Though I am the prime minister now, in my youth I was the captain of the royal guard. Things like callouses on your hands, the grace by which you step and most importantly; even though you are wearing a skirt there is a slight bulge over your right thigh. If I was a betting man I would guess you have a collapsible sword strapped to your leg.』

After hearing such a line as expected the heads of all her classmates turned to her direction so fast Cael thought they might have gotten whiplash. Alas at this time she appeared far more concerned with four-eye’s quick analysis of her.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

All her glares at the bespectacled man soon disappeared though, instead being replaced by the cat-like smile that only appears on her face so rarely it’s considered one of the seven wonders of their school.

『You sure have good eyes for someone wearing glasses.』

An equally predatory smile like that of an old tiger appeared on his face as he replied in turn.

『I could say the same to you.』

And so just like that the tension vanished from the room as if it was never there after such cryptic lines were spoken. The Emperor who realised that at this point even his own subordinate was treating him like air decided to clear his throat a little louder than necessary to return things to the original topic.

『So Yuna Miyuki, you adamantly refuse this calling?』

Turning to face the pitiful emperor once more Yuna returned to her normal expression and replied with a simple 『Yes』 to clarify her stance. Hearing her confirmation he nodded and motioned to another maid that was on standby near the wall.

『Very well, go with this one here and she will see to your needs as you depart. While it is a pity, before you go may I at least know why?』

『My reasons are my own.』

After such simple response she glanced back towards Alex and Cael one last time before silently following the maid.

Cael himself didn’t know what to think in particular but considering it may be their last meeting the sudden departure felt a little cold if he were to be honest. Though he didn’t dwell as his next problem cropped up soon after, that being finding a way to convince Alex to go first.

Life is funny like that sometimes though as when Cael was pondering on such a thing Alex without warning approached the throne.

Seeing him walk up the Emperor visibly brightened and stood up to greet him.

『Ahh, Alexander Heart the I have already heard much about you from high priest Veyron.』

Alex upon hearing he was being observed scratched his head while smiling wryly before trying his hand at humour.

『All good things I hope.』

『Yes indeed all good things you need not be concerned. Now then, by my right as Emperor I ask you this … 』

『Yes, I have the will to protect the peoples of Eden.』

Taken aback at being interrupted once more albeit for different reasons the Emperor could only dumbfoundedly complain.

『I didn’t get to finish.』

Cael knew how Selene’s father was feeling all too well as he himself had been interrupted by an enthusiastic Alex more times than he cares to remember. And now just like all those times Alex refused to budge an inch becoming the very embodiment of stubbornness.

『It doesn’t matter, it’s never wrong to help others. If you need my strength it’s yours, if you need my life you can take it. If I stood idly by watching disaster approach without working up the courage to do anything about it I would never be able to live with myself.』

Seeing that Alex was serious the Emperor sat back down and looked at him with scrutiny as if only now he was truly seeing him for the first time.

『Charisma indeed. I shall take this as your vow then Alexander Heart. Best try not to disappoint then I have high hopes for you boy, now stand to the side I have one final matter to attend to.』

Knowing this was his cue Cael stepped forward, all apprehensions carefully hidden behind the guise of a mischievous smile that if you looked hard enough didn’t quite reach his eyes.
