Time felt like it slowed as the bang of the falling door reached Anaya. The dry arid desert air does not do well for bone preservation. Dry bone tends to flake, and what flakes tend to turn to dust.
The dust bellow that followed the fall of the door immediately impaired her vision.
Startled, her first breath was heavy and with a slightly chalky taste. Her potential element of surprise lost, her coughs having alerted the enemy of her position.
Realizing she was giving away her position, she immediately fell behind the table, back facing the tabletop as she hid her body and simultaneously tried to control her breath. She brought her hands to her mouth.
She was hoping to reduce the dust she breathed in, but she soon understood it was not that easy.
Still coughing, Anaya saw movement fly above her previous location, followed by a loud clatter as the creature flew off and crashed into the far wall.
The creature’s beak was stuck in the wall as Anaya saw it try to fly backwards, with little success. It soon turned to erratic movements that were having better success. Understanding it might be only her chance, Anaya instantly ran to the creature, staff raised above her head.
With a courage filled scream, she planted the top of the staff on the base of the creature’s head, pushing it back into the wall.

Stunned 1 second
The creature fell still and Anaya clobbered it once more
-2 blunt damage
She missed the head as it fell lower.
The sudden dust stormed that picked up as the bird starting flying again spooked her and she took a step back.
About the size of a toddler, the bird turned and Anaya took another step, courage welling up as she steeled herself and pushed in for another hit.
-6 damage.
All she saw were the words, followed by a searing pain as the creature’s beak tried to puncture her thigh. The next moment, time slowed as she saw the beak’s tip turn red and hammer into her thigh, to be stopped by her trousers.

The sudden slowed time allowed her to witness the attacks. Her body could not react to the impacts, but she could at least see them.
The creature seemed irked as it tried again, but this time she stepped back and avoided the attack.

Before the notification finished, she dismissed it to focus on the battle. She put some well-needed distance between herself and her enemy. Taking another look at the creature, the unsteady movement of the creature suggested significant damage, and she realized the creature did not have a great constitution.
It mirrored the build of a bird, so it was a safe assumption to make. As she was thinking, the birds beak turned red once more and it initiated another attack. Knowing she was not fast enough to dodge it, she defended her vulnerable parts and let herself take the damage.

Two damage notifications followed.
She followed by an overhead swing to the left wing of the creature.
-7 blunt damage
A sharp snap sounded out as the wing broke and it fell to the ground. She fell onto it with renewed confidence as swing after swing fell onto the creature.

The fight was not pretty, her amateurish pummeling doing the job still.
She checked her inventory and took out a brown feather the size of her head. Curious, she channeled her observation skill.
Feather, crude loot.
She put it away and looked around. The dust was starting to settle down and the anode that had rolled to the table during the fight, was slowly growing dull as a carpet of dust had settled upon it. Calming her breath, she sat down and let herself relax.
She had won a fight.
