Chapter 5

Confusion and chaos were clouding her mind as she tried to take stock of her surroundings.

The prompt to change jobs still hovered in front of her screen, but she realized she could dismiss it with a thought.

With clear vision, she was now able to observe her surroundings.

Prior to taking any action, a ring of notifications overwhelmed her vision.

Anaya stared at the screen floating in front of her face. All the loot slotted itself in one inventory slot, each slot occupied by one item. The soul essence gems and affinity gem each had exclamation points on them.

She ignored that and the rest of her rewards as she tried to get her bearings. She looked around and found herself in a dark corridor with dark gray walls. There was an opening at the far end of the room. She struggled to perceive a few things from the light that entered.

Behind her was a room without a door. Light came in from the room, but it was not enough to let her see in the corridor. Despite the low light, she could see that the corridor was filled with stuff.

The sole thing she could clearly perceive was a shadow outside the corridor moving towards the entrance.

The sudden movement forced her to scuttle to the lit room behind her and, while hidden, peaked out.

The shadow had now stopped moving and had reduced its pace.

“Master, we have a situation,” it spoke out loud.

Silence echoed in the corridor.

“May I come in, master?”

Caught off guard by the language she did not understand, she didn’t respond. Even if she wanted to, what was she supposed to say.

The silence lingered.

“Master?”

The shadow moved closer until it was right by the entrance.

Holding her breath, she moved backwards to stay full hidden when she bumped on a table. The loud shatter of a glass falling filled the room, echoing into the corridor.

A couple of seconds passed, eyes closed.

Realizing nothing was happening, she opened her eyes to peek. Slowly she edged to the door and peeked.

looking around she realized the shadow was no longer there.

Panic stricken she looked all around the corridor, focusing on dark corners, not that he could see much.

Annoyed at being startled by the notifications, Anaya immediately dismissed them and continued to look for the shadow.

After a few minutes of peeking, she realized the shadow was gone.

Anaya looked around the room she was in and the light from the crystal in the corner made it easier. Curious as to what the light was, she moved closer to inspect in.

[Light crystal anode] popped up above the crystal as she continued to inspect it.

The various and changing lights that were swimming in the were mesmerizing but somehow the light shone white in the room.

The little chipmunk at the back of her head nudged and she took the light. An soft impulse followed and she let it win. The anode disappeared from her arm, taking all the light with.

The sudden complete darkness startled her but for some reason she knew where the anode was.

Focusing on her hand, the light reappeared after a bit. Ascertain of her theory, she looked around and homed in on the book next to where the anode was.

She touched the book and after a second the book disappeared again. She was pretty sure the items were stored in the inventory and she had to touch and with intent pull the item in.

Looking around she saw a large picture on one of the walls.

She walked to the wall where there was a tapestry mounted bringing the light closer.

The tapestry told a story and she needed all the information she could get, maybe the tapestry had something to note.

She touched the tapestry to store it in her inventory but it refused. She tried again and the same thing happened.

It was almost her height both length and wide and she figured it was too big to put in her inventory.

She focused on it to try her new skill.

[insufficient skill]

Her curiosity peaked as she wondered what kind of object would not allow her to even get basic information about it.

She wanted it and she would take it after she was done in here.

Moving and looking around, she found what seemed like stairs towards a roof opening.

She made her way up the stairs. The staircase felt like no material she had seen houses built. It resembled bone to the touch and that was a thought she refused to acknowledge.

It sent shivers down her spine when she thought about it.

As she made her way up, she came to a door with a latch. A breeze was blowing from under the latch and she knew she was heading outside. She opened the door.

Frozen, she could not believe what she could see and immediately closed the door.

Anaya tried to calm down as she realized she was loosing control. Breathing getting heavier, she felt like the walls were closing in on her.

She fell to the ground and with her head between her legs a whimper that turned into silent sobs echoed into the silent staircase.
