Chapter 2: Predecessor

Chapter 2: Predecessor

The sudden and intense hunger caught Arthur off guard. His stomach felt like a bottomless pit, and it made his mouth water uncontrollably. Droplets of saliva fell to the ground, emitting a strange corrosive blue smoke. Although this bizarre sight puzzled him, hunger was his immediate concern.

His attention fixated on the eggshell that had hatched him. Despite its previous unappealing appearance, it now exuded an oddly enticing aroma, signaling its edibility. Could he eat it? Many oviparous creatures consumed their eggshells after hatching, right?

Looking around, Arthur couldn't spot any other food options to satisfy his hunger. Without further contemplation, he impulsively grabbed a piece of eggshell and stuffed it into his mouth.

Crunch, crunch. To his surprise, the eggshell didn't taste as bad as he had expected. It had a crispy texture, as if it had been baked, possibly due to the nearby lava beach. Strangely, it was rather delicious.

His hunger was finally appeased by consuming the eggshell. However, just as he began to feel some relief, a sudden and inexplicable memory flooded his mind, leaving him stunned.

This memory was an inheritance conveyed by the eggshell—a brief glimpse into his identity and a name.

Arthur froze upon realizing that, through this inherited memory, he had discovered his true nature he was a demon!

This revelation was hard to accept. When he first found himself in this bizarre state, Arthur hadn't even considered the possibility of being a demon. While it was disheartening, it was also intriguing.

However, now, the situation appeared even more dire than he had imagined.

"Curses, is this some kind of mistake? I saved someone! Even if i didn't earn me a place in heaven, at least I should've had a chance to be reborn as a new person. But becoming a little devil? Is this a failed journey to heaven and an entry ticket to hell?" Arthur vented his frustration internally, but he felt utterly helpless. There was no undoing this transformation.

With the consumption of the eggshell, Arthur had absorbed his real demon name. However, he knew he couldn't reveal it to anyone. Knowing a demon's true name could lead to significant harm through various means. It was a common vulnerability shared by all demons.

This revelation was akin to a computer automatically generating a file with a unique name. Knowing the full name allowed for precise and potentially destructive manipulation of the demon's soul.

Now aware of this, Arthur decided to stick to his old name rather than using his demon name. He had to be cautious in this unknown world and avoid identifying as a human, or he might face dire consequences.

In this moment of reflection, Arthur realized that his primary concern was survival and adapting to this transformation. He couldn't afford to misjudge this new world. After all, he had already been given a second chance at life, and he couldn't take it for granted.

The eggshell was not large, and after some time, Arthur had devoured it entirely. Just as he swallowed the last piece, a voice echoed in his mind.

"Origin"

Arthur was taken aback. What was happening now?

Before he could react, an unusual scene unfolded before him. A panel appeared, featuring a peculiar eye that blinked at him, accompanied by a clicking sound reminiscent of a camera shutter.

The eye vanished, replaced by an image of a little demon with dark red skin, pointed ears, a pair of emerging horns, and a tangled mass of black fetal hair. The creature was unexpectedly cute.

"Is this what I look like now?" Arthur muttered in astonishment.

He noticed various functional options at the top of the panel. The first was "Remodel," which offered things like adding or removing parts of his body. These allowed him to modify and define his appearance, add special effects and colors, and integrate them into his self-portrait using puzzles.

Arthur also learned that he needed souls to perform these operations. The more detailed the description and the more complex the definition, the more souls and higher-quality souls were required.

Arthur, with a background in art design, found the modeling aspect manageable. However, obtaining souls proved more challenging.

As he contemplated this, the moon's light grew brighter, signaling that many demon eggs on the beach were hatching. Little demons emerged from their shells, transforming the once-silent beach into agonazing crys
