Part 8- Three Bikes

Sunlight poured in through the window, waking Cody from his restful sleep. Cody laid in his bed, taking in the room he had been sleeping in since he was four-year-old. The walls were painted blue, but Cody remembered a time when they were covered by wallpapers of images of cultivators practicing their martial stances in the moonlight. Nancy told Cody he wanted to be a cultivator who could travel the stars when he was a toddler. Somewhere in the midst of growing up, they were replaced by nothing. Cody wondered if there are any wallpapers of motorbikes available.

Probably not. Most people don’t even remember them.

Cody turned his head to look at the small desk by the window. On the desk was a basic computer that was connected to the Cultivation Net, a computer that Cody had used to do some rudimentary checks on motorbikes.

To his surprise, the Net did have some information on motorbikes, but all of them were useless to Cody as they were just historical records from before the Cultivation Age. There wasn’t anything about how to build them. Like so many things, that information was lost after the extinction of the humans. Cody couldn’t even find any information on whether anyone tried to convert motorbikes to the new Age. Considering the success he and Chuck had, Cody found the lack of information to be surprising.

Someone must have tried something.

Unfortunately, Cody was never much of a history buff. Not that it would help. A lot of information was lost after the fall of the humans. Cody checked the small clock on his bedstand and shook his head. He was late.

Honestly, Cody wasn’t surprised. Usually, he had to wake up before dawn to get to the school stop on time, and even without the clock, the bright sunlight told Cody he had missed the school bus.

It was on purpose.

Despite the work he did with Chuck over the weekend, Nancy did not allow him to take the day off. Helping out in the barn was no excuse for missing school and she expect Cody to make his way to school. She even had an idea of how he was going to do it. Cody smiled as a strange feeling came over him. He knew what it was, and what was causing it.

Cody got out of bed with a spring in his step and went to the shower. He usually skips the morning shower as he woke so early in the morning, but he was not rushing for the bus and the hot water from the shower was invigorating.

After the quick shower, Cody went back to his room and took out his riding clothes. Like him, Chuck and Nancy believe his advancement was due to his vision and the motorbike, but they differ in which was more important. Cody and Chuck believe it was the act of riding the bike that improved his cultivation, Nancy believes it was Cody’s connection to his vision.

Like Chuck, Nancy was a Novice-Three cultivator but she was an artist and her cultivation was always more spiritual than mechanical. When it comes to cultivation matters involving visions, she was the closest thing the family has to an expert and Nancy believes Cody should live his life as close to the vision as possible to get the maximum effect. So, when Cody told his parents everything he seen in his vision, including the clothes the rider was wearing, Nancy went to work making the clothes.

Nancy wanted him to wear the same clothes as the person he saw in his vision. Cody did not object. Unlike private schools, public schools like Venspur West High do not have uniforms and Cody could wear what he wants to school.

Moments after taking out the clothes, Cody was in a set of dark blue jeans, and wearing a plain white undershirt with a black vest over the top of the shirt. Cody remembers that the vest was the most important part of the outfit, and it was the most problematic.

The vest Cody saw in his vision was made from a durable form of leather and there was a symbol on the back of it. Strange ancient words were written on the top and bottom of the symbol and Cody remember a strong sense of pride in wearing it. Words could not describe a symbol, so Cody tried to draw a picture of it. It was not ideal. Cody was no artist, and his picture was more like a doodle.

Nancy was less than pleased but the Harder family had no choice. Cody was the only lead they had, so Nancy decided that it would be safer to abandon the symbols and words and just wear the vest. Without the symbols, it looked a little bare, but it couldn’t be help. Cody put it on and walked to the barn.

The ground was still damp from the rain that fell the night before, but the door of the barn had been left open as usual. This was not an issue in the past, but Cody wondered if he should tell Chuck to install some security. Things were different now with the motorbikes.

The reasons for his doubts were evident the moment he stepped into the barn. Two gorgeous motorbikes stood in the corner of the barn, both of them were roadworthy, but Cody still could not help but frown when he saw them.

“Finally awake huh?” Chuck stood up from another motorbike he was working on. His overalls were dirty, but Chuck had a big smile on his face and his eyes shone with excitement. “And I see you are ready for school.”

There was pride in Chuck’s voice, but Cody was too anxious to hear it. He pointed at the motorbikes in the corner and asked in a loud scare voice. “Where’s the third one? There’s supposed to be three!”

“You mean the scooter? The one you claim should ‘not’ be called a motorbike?” Chuck gave a chuckle at his son’s reaction. “Nancy took it.”

“What?” Cody’s mind went blank.

“What do you mean by ‘what’? You knew Nancy is going to the Cultivation League today, and since you are going to test run the motorbike, it made sense for her to do the same.” Chuck sighed theatrically. “If only I do not have to work from home, I would be out there showing off my babies.”

Cody sigh in relief. It was irrational, but for a moment he was afraid the scooter had been stolen. He was too used to his father’s theatrics to be bothered by them, but Nancy taking the scooter was a change in the plans.

“That wasn’t the plan. I was the only one who is going to show it off to the city. Why did you guys change the plan?”

“Two is better than one,” Chuck replied. “Besides, you know I could never say no to my sweet honeybee.”

Cody did not barf, but it was a close call. He chose to ignore Chuck’s disgusting voice and went to the motorbikes in the corner. He only have eyes for the chopper, and his father was soon beside him. The older man pat on the seat he had installed on the motorbike and teased.

“I wondered how you can make it to school on time in this?”

Cody looked at the motorbike in question and answered with a smile. “Not a problem. I will make it with time to spare.”

Chuck raised a sceptical eye at the motorbike. “You’re sure? I don’t get why you liked the chopper so much. Nancy’s scooter is a far more comfortable ride and if you are looking for speed, the sport bike is much faster.”

Chuck pointed at the other bike in the barn. It was a sport bike and according to the blueprints he drew, sport bikes were motorbikes designed for speed and acceleration, often at the expense of comfort. It was a design that’s the direct opposite of a scooter.

Despite the misgivings of Cody, scooters were motorbikes and according to knowledge gained from his vision, they were one of the first motorbikes the humans created. Designed to be a comfortable ride with a step-through frame, a seat, and a platform for the rider's feet, Nancy had taken a liking to it in an instant.

Cody did not get it. For some reason, he looked down on scooters. He felt much better about sport bikes, but he also did not feel them the way he did the chopper. Cody did not love the sport bike the way he loves the chopper, and there was a problem with it.

“I thought you said you need to buy a more powerful cultivation engine for the sport bike? Surely, it hasn’t come in already?”

“Of course not,” Chuck said as he stood beside the sport bike, “but after looking through your blueprint, I think a more powerful cultivation engine is not actually needed for a sport bike. I installed a normal engine on it instead and it should work just as well. Less power, but it should still get you to school faster than the chopper.”

Cody frowned at his father’s words. “Chuck, that’s not what the blueprint says. Sport bikes are supposed to be high performance vehicles with powerful engines, a lightweight frame, and high-performance braking systems. This one doesn’t even have a windscreen to block the wind.”

“A windscreen is not necessary with a normal engine.” Chuck countered. “The frame and braking systems are there, and with a normal engine, you will not be going that fast. Besides, the motorbikes were designed before the Cultivation Age. They were designed for humans, and we cultivators are generally much tougher than humans.”

Like most cultivators, Chuck looked at the people before the Cultivation Age with pity and that was a viewpoint Cody shared. However, Cody had a slight change of mind after having his vision.

The humans can’t be that bad if they managed to invent something like the motorbike.
