Cody knew that riding a motorbike to school would cause a stir, but he had greatly underestimated the reactions of his fellow students. The moment he arrived in the morning and parked the bike in the school carpark, they gaped at him. They gawked. They pointed and whispered, as if his motorbike was the most bizarre object they had ever laid eyes on.
In a way, it was.
Still, Cody wasn’t expecting some of the students to give him a wide berth. When he walked through the halls, everyone was stepping to the side and giving way to him. Cody supposed he should have.
In the Cultivation Age, strange often equals dangerous.
To his surprise, Cody found that he did not mind the looks he was receiving. He was a big guy with long black hair, but Cody was a non-entity in school due to his status as a Mortal-One cultivator. Being the centre of attention was strange, but in a good way.
Cody smiled as he made his way to his first class. When he entered, several students immediately shut up. Cody could see that most of the class were there, but everyone stopped talking the moment he stepped in. All eyes were on him as Cody walked to his seat. That was when Cody realized the students, at least some of them, were afraid of him.
Being feared is better than being ignored.
Another nugget of wisdom from the biker in his vision, only this one was something Cody agreed with. Cody could feel that it was just the beginning of a good day. He was now somebody in school.
However, it was only during lunchtime when Cody realized how big of a stir he created. Known as a Mortal-One cultivator, Cody did not have a group or clique in school, but he has a usual spot in the school canteen with a group of students. They weren’t really friends but were grouped together due to their similar circumstance. They were all students in Mortal-One.
It was a table for the losers of the school. Students who were only good for a pity laugh and the occasional friendly greeting. But that day in the canteen was different.
Cody had always been a loner, but he had ridden a motorbike to school that day, something that was unheard of. So, when he sat down on the bench, all eyes were on him. The kids around the table all waited with bated breath for the explanation of what the motorbike was and how he got his hands on it. Cody was forced to repeat his story but unlike his teachers and principal, the reaction from the follow students were much more encouraging.
Most accept his story, some even looked envious. Cody was a little surprised by that, but soon realized that his follow students thought it was wonderful thing to be part of a family that is trying to push the boundaries of cultivation. Even when Cody informed them that it wasn't his motorcycle, that his parents were the ones who invented their family cultivation method, and that their Cultivation Method might not be approved by the Cultivation League, Cody was lifted by association.
“So, your parents created a Cultivation Invention, and invented a new Cultivation System?” one student asked, a little disbelievingly.
“Yes,” Cody said, sticking to the story.
“Wow! I heard the rumours, but I did not truly believe it. What is it called? Has the Cultivation League certified the system yet?” the same student asked again.
“Not yet,” Cody replied, scratching his neck as he tried to remember the name of the student. Cody thinks he was called Jax, Jack, or something starting with the letter J. Cody hope someone will mention it in passing later and answered his question. “They only intend to submit only their invention to the League at the moment. That’s why they allow me to ride the motorbike to school today. The testing and verification of a Cultivation System will take much longer.”
“Motorbike? Is that what the vehicle is called? How did your parents come out with the name?” another student asked.
“They didn’t. The motorbike is a vehicle invented by the humans. You can check the Cultivation Net for information on them. My father modified the design for the Cultivation age.” Cody said.
“Is that true?” A tall, thin boy with a shock of blond hair and light blue eyes asked. Cody was glad the boy spoke. The boy’s name was Mario, Cody knows it because he had been taking the school bus since middle school as well.
Mario looked at the rest of the group that had gathered around their table, and everyone took out their transceivers. They began searching the Net and it wasn’t long before someone found a hit.
“Found it! Okay, this is so cool.” Mario said. “I never heard of it before. Your parents are going to be famous.”
“Oh wow! Cody, you are the luckiest kid on earth,” Jax/Jack exclaimed.
“That’s one way of looking at it, Jake.”
Everyone’s eyes went to the newcomer who put her tray on the table and sat down like she belong there. She didn’t. It was Kitty, and she definitely did not belong to their table.
This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Everyone was stunned, and Kitty had a very smug look on her face that told Cody she was enjoying their reaction. As Cody filed Jake’s name in his mind, he became clear to him that some of the students at his table have no idea who she was.
“Everyone, this is Kitty. Kitty, I believe you are at the wrong table. Unless you have something to say to us.” Cody decided to introduce her and find out what she wants.
“Oh, I do.” Kitty replied.
Cody blinked slowly, expecting her to continue. She did not. That’s when Mario begins to stand. “I think I’ll go somewhere else to finish my meal.”
A number of the other students decided to do the same, and for some reason that pissed Cody off. This was their table, why should they leave for an intruder?
“No. Stay.” Everyone stopped at Cody’s command, and it was a command. Cody’s words brooked no argument. Cody secretly prayed he’s not turning into Nancy.
Cody waited for everyone to sit back down before giving Kitty a head toss. She knew it was an indication for her continue or leave. She sighed before speaking.
“And here I was trying to keep things quiet.”
“Then, you shouldn’t have approached me during lunch. What do you want, Kitty?” Cody said.
“Oh, I see that strange vehicle you drove to school today, and I am wondering if you could send me back home this evening?” asked Kitty.
The other students quickly looked back at Cody. Their eyes were eager, but Cody was lost.
“What? Why?” Cody asked, not knowing what gotten into Kitty.
“Well, it’s on the way. And you don’t even need to drive me to my home. Just drop me at my usual stop, and you can go on your way. What do you say, my friend?” Kitty smiled seductively as she asked, and Cody had to wonder if she practices that smile to all the ‘friends’ Jenni found for her. If she did, Kitty would have a lot of ‘friends’, But Cody was not one of them.
“It is called riding, not driving. You don’t drive a motorbike, you ride it. And we were never friends Kitty. You are just a girl I know.” Kitty clutched her heart like she was having a heart attack and Cody had to stop from rolling his eyes. Everyone was so dramatic today.
“So, I am not giving you a ride anywhere till you tell me what’s going on.”
“Are you sure?” Kitty said with a smile that promised Cody he would regret it if he said ‘yes’. After a moment of indecision, Cody gave her a nod anyway.
“Well, I heard from the grapevine that you are now a Mortal-Two cultivator. And that your advancement was due to the vehicle your parents created. Is that true?” Kitty’s smile got wider as she asked.
Cody frowned as gasps could be heard throughout the school canteen. Cody knew many students were all listening in, the school canteen was a lot quieter than usual, but he was surprised by the number of knowing looks he saw. Has the news of his advancement spread already?
“You shouldn’t listen to gossip Kitty.” Cody said flatly.
“Is that a denial? Kitty challenged.
A challenge Cody could not meet. Cody could have lied, he should have lied, but something in his soul told him that the biker in his vision would not.
This is who I am. This is what I am. I deny nothing.
So, Cody did not.
Cody kept quiet, and his silence told the other students everything they need to know. He was waiting for Kitty to speak when Mario raised his hand and asked a question.
“Can these motorbikes improve everyone’s cultivation?”
Kitty seems a little put out by his interruption, but the tentative way Mario asked the question made Cody turned his head at him. There was a look of desperation on the blond boy’s face that made Cody realized what the news of his advancement meant to everyone at the table.
Outside Kitty, everyone at the table was a Mortal-One cultivator. They were the dregs of the school, destined for the lowest rung of society, and Cody was part of that. They just heard that Cody no longer was. Cody had climbed out of that hole, and they wonder if they could as when.
Cody had given them hope.
Realizing the implication of his words, Cody coughed and smiled. “Yes.”
Eyes widened, jaws dropped in shock, and Cody heard a chorus of raised voices. He raised a hand. The canteen quietened, and Cody shout loudly for everyone to hear. “As some of you may know, I am now a Mortal-Two cultivator, and yes, it is due to the motorbikes and cultivation system my family invented. Both have not been certified by the Cultivation League yet, so I can’t tell you anything about them. So, don’t even bother asking about them.”
Cody immediately began to hear whispers, but no one was shouting and several of the students were sitting back down. Cody knew it was as good he was going to get.
“I’ll pay you if you drive me home today.” Kitty said after a moment.
I frowned as several of students looked at her in surprise. Kitty put up a hand in mock surrender.
“I am not asking you to tell me anything about your family’s new system, just asking for a ride back home. I heard you gave Mr Oster a ride around the school carpark, so I know you are allowed to do it.”
Cody shook my head. “The motorbikes have not been certified and are under testing.”
“Then let me help you tested the vehicle. Your family need outsiders to test the vehicle anyway. How else would you know if the cultivation benefits affect cultivators outside your family? Let me help you.”
Kitty did not give up and Cody rubbed his chin in thought as she brought up a good point. Certain cultivation Systems and Techniques effects only people of a certain disposition or DNA, and while Cody did not believe motorbikes would have the same limits, he did knows how his vision affected his advancement. How much would the motorbike benefit someone who never had the vision? Cody did not know and realized this was a question the League would certainly be asking.
He looked at Kitty and saw the calm desire in her eyes. Cody was not fooled. Kitty’s desire was not for him, or for the freedom of the road, it was for her cultivation. She wanted to advance, and like most cultivators, she was willing to do anything she could to do so.
“I’ll give you a ride today, but I will need to ask my parents about allowing you to assist us in the testing.”
Kitty smiled like she won the lottery, but before she could say anything, Jake beat her to it.
“I am willing to help as well. Tell me anything, and I will do it.”
“Me too,” Mario said straight away, “whatever your family want, I am your man.”
Everyone sat forward, expressing their desire to assist Cody’s family. Cody was shocked and considered saying something to dampen his follow students’ excitement. Just as he was about to speak, a thought came to him.
A club. A Brotherhood. A Gang.
The alien thoughts came to Cody, and he knew that the biker in his vision approves of this development. Cody do not know if this was something he should pursue but decided to hold back to hear what Chuck and Nancy had to say.
A motorcycle club, a brotherhood, and a gang. A wry smile appeared on Cody’s face as he thought of the words and their meaning. It was not a bad idea.
