Chapter 33

“Almost everyone loves to see a job well done. The difficulty comes with the work required to make that a reality.”~Unknown

Bernin was woken from her nap by the sun. She had worked throughout the night and must have fallen asleep sometime in the morning. She stretched her arms, popping her joints and stood up. The job was done. As expected, the books of Gregarious were perfectly done. Now all that remained was to send the report and talk to Gregarious again. Then she could finally leave.

It wasn't that she hadn't enjoyed her time here. The opposite in fact, but the consequences were catching up with her. She had made a note in her journal though. This might be an excellent place to set up shop for a few decades if she felt like it. A more permanent solution could be worked out then, but that wasn't without its own cost. It wasn't a decision she made lightly. This place was but one of the locations though, she would have to think on it some more.

Picking up her briefcase and storing the final pages away, she decided to get some breakfast before going to the top of the tree. She hadn't eaten since lunch yesterday, so it was quite necessary. Breakfast here wasn't anything different or special. It was, however, pure comfort food. Sausages, eggs and bread were the basics, but they also had these small hardened sugary blocks. Without waiting for her reply, he continued.

“He had been engaged to one of the twins from one of the hunting teams. They are actually a whole separate conversation. Did you know they met when they both shot an arrow in the other eye of a three eyed deer. Supposedly they did the third eye together. But enough about them…”

Bernin tuned him out after that. It really wasn’t his fault. The whole town was like this, he was likely doomed from birth. Bernin lamented that his parents really should have known better.

“...it turns out that the brother’s boyfriend was also interested in him and using the relationship to get closer to him instead. The whole town is taking various different sides. There’s even a town hall meeting planned to resolve the situation. Mage Gregarious has been in talks for the whole morning trying to diffuse the situation.”

Bernin was happy to have tuned in again.

“I’m sorry Tyriom, but did you say Gregarious has been buddy for the whole morning? Surely he can make time for a short meeting? Right?”

“I’m afraid not Mage Bernin, at least not until this whole situation has been resolved. The whole town is in an uproar.”

Bernin sighed deeply and did something she hadn’t done since her time at university.

“Please Tyriom, tell me all about the drama.”
