“Nothing is certain, except for death and taxes.”~Excerpt from Politics and loyalty by Daniel Defoe
Bernin woke from a restless sleep. She really shouldn’t have opened the packet late at night. She just couldn’t get the fact that she would be auditing a council member out of her head. The excitement had largely waned by then and had been replaced with a quiet tension. She had to get this right.
Though the fact that she had been assigned this level of job at all was a great honor, it was a burden as well. Eyes would be on her now, no mistakes. She straightened her sleepwear and moved to the shower, still having the future on her mind. She kept thinking about what to do next and how to approach it. What could go wrong and what could go right.
She moved largely on autopilot for the next half-hour. Staying in the shower for half of that time. After getting dressed, she took another breath and began working with purpose. It was time to pack. She began speaking aloud to herself, a method she picked up early to help center her thoughts.
“Let’s assume it will take at least a couple days to get there. With a week staying at either destination for the audit itself and a week to travel between towns… Let’s make it an even month with two weeks of staying in an inn there. Do inn’s in the frontier have cleaning installations, probably not, but they have to have something to clean themselves.”

“Let’s not risk it too much. I’ll pack the portable stuff with me as well. That takes up way too much space in the smaller suitcase, I’ll have to bring the big one.”
She moved to her closer and grabbed a brown suitcase, closed with two clasps. It wasn’t that much bigger than the one she normally took, at least on the outside. She had to shell out a large amount of money for it a few years ago, but it was worth it. It was a full 3 times bigger on the inside. A truly massive amount. Coupled with a weightlifting enchantment, it cost her a lot even with calling in a favor.
“Let’s get all the other stuff out of this one first.”
She had more pairs of clothing, but at this rate she might as well move her entire closet in. That wouldn’t work. She also couldn’t assume that all her normal amenities would likely be missing… Maybe it was time to go shopping. A good trip outside would help clear her mind anyway. Get her off of her fixation on the future and back to enjoying the present. Might as well make a day trip of it, get some lunch in a nice restaurant as well. Yeah that was what she needed. That was exactly what she needed.
