Chapter 26

Who doesn’t love a job well done.~Unknown

Bernin was packing her suitcase. She was used to living out of it, but the last couple weeks she had unpacked a lot more than normal. Once news from Haspal came down that she was leaving, some of the townspeople had also decided to give gifts. They didn’t have much, but that was beside the point.

There were no merchants in town this time, so she would have to travel by herself. Now that she could cast the tracking spell again though, it shouldn’t be a problem. She might not have a sunship, but she still had a broom. It was a little stereotypical, but it could move quite fast and she should be able to ride above the treetops the whole while.

Gregarious lived in a larger town. She had read up on it before she left. Treehome was named, rather poignantly for being a town surrounding a truly massive tree. There were some reports that it had been unnaturally grown, but nothing had ever been proven. She was looking forward to it, the larger settlement would likely have a lot more accommodations. While the town wasn’t terrible, it was still just a small town.

Before all that though, there was one more thing to take care of here. Haspal knew about it of course. When he had mentioned her ‘nickname’ it proved he knew who she was, it had also shown that he knew what happened next. Luckily the town had been very welcoming, Bernin never liked what she had to do if they weren’t. The urge was becoming larger and larger as she said goodbye and left just out of sight. It was time to begin.

----------------------------------------

In the moonlight, in a circle of small daisies she sat. The ground soft beneath her legs and swaying softly with the wind. What came next was more instinct than directed magic. Her gift had come with string attached, some she had figured out pretty early. An allergy to cold-forged iron was rather obvious once found. Other parts though, she had only realised years later.

Greetings and hospitality are important to the fey. She wasn’t a full fey, she could live and survive in the material world. But she had enough of their magic, enough to make first and last impressions important. The urge was always there, easily ignored most of the time. But she had come to this village to pass judgement, while technically she had only come to judge Haspal, that logic didn’t stop the urge. Luckily the town had been helpful, hospitable and even kind. That made what had to come next a lot easier.

In words not of this plane she spoke a judgement into being. Even she did not understand the words perfectly, they come without conscious thought, feeling given form. The spell was larger than she could normally cast, the land itself helping shape it into being. She did not know what effect it would have, but she threw her feelings of kindness and welcome into it. Eventually she collapsed. The daisies shone briefly as if lit from within.

Bernin would wake hours later, undisturbed within the ring. She turned herself invisible and flew up hoping to see the results. Nothing massive had happened. No new trees, grass or people. The fields did look a bit healthier though. Just a tiny bit. Hopefully it would be enough. She left soon after.
