Prologue

They had been driving for days. Morgaine was currently at the wheel with Robert and Keung both in the backseat of the old caspian blue Mustang. They had left Nevada after Keung’s failed attempt to leave Earth had resulted in his setting off a weapon of unimaginable destruction.

She checked the backseat and made sure the two were asleep. Satisfied they were out she turned on the radio for an update on what is happening back in Nevada.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the death toll has reached sixteen thousand and we still have no idea what had caused the catastrophic damage to the west coast electrical grid. Today is day six that the west coast of The United States is going without power during a record breaking heat wave. President Orangeskull has not yet released a statement on the attack that decimated the power grids of Nevada, California, Arizona, Oregon and New Mexico. Figures are still coming in, but experts are saying this is likely to be the most catastrophic attack in United States history.

Generators have been dispatched throughout the impacted states with a priority on the elderly and infirmed.” the radio continued.

“Yeah, it’s not everyday a homicidal alien intelligence attempts to destroy a centuries old artificial intelligence with complete disregard for any and all bystanders,” Morgaine said in a whisper to herself.

“Is this accurate,” The host said in a hushed tone picked up by the hot microphone.

“This just in, President Orangeskull has just announced that the perpetrators of the attack have now been confirmed to be the government of Mexico. We take you live to the Whitehouse lawn where the President is now making the announcement to the press,” The announcer said and switched to the audio of the live feed.

“We have been searching, so long, so hard, it wasn’t easy, not easy at all. My people, all great people you understand, the best, the best people with a talent to search things out, they called all their people, they shook every tree and today, I can tell you, the attack that devastated California and Nevada, taking out their electrical grid and the grids of the neighboring states, it was a weapon, a super weapon of amazing power, that was launched by Mexico. That’s right, Mexico, I spoke to the president of Mexico and he denies the attack, like he was going to admit it, no. Uh no. I told him, ‘Mister Presidente, I will not be taking this lying down, no sir. You have awakened the giant my friend.” The buffoon said through the whirling of helicopter blades.

Morgaine turned off the radio. “You have got to be kidding me,” She said to herself and looked at the two men in the backseat sleeping soundly.

They were hours into Arkansas. She had been in this state for a few weeks while hunting down Keung. She smirked. That old man Deogol was evasive and a computer genius. He had dozens of alias’, dead end physical addresses, and dead drops. Now he was a man she would have liked on her side. She checks the mirror to look into the backseat and upon the men there.

Keung is now something of a mass murderer and Mexico is getting the blame, but he isn’t the same man that had taken those actions. Then there was Robert. He’s a city cop that vanished off the grid after stealing a kid from a hospital, went into another state, and ended up being held hostage by her.

She smiled again. Okay. People change. Keung didn’t know exactly what he was doing and Myna’s children and HAL set him straight. But now who is Robert? Her time getting to know that man was limited, that’s true. But when you are a telepath, that is often more than enough time to get to know the truth of a person. These two.

They just aren’t the same people that went under the knife, so to speak.
