Chapter 17 - The River That Remembers

Chapter 17 - The River That Remembers

The deafening thunder was heightened by the storm that emerged from the sky. I couldn’t stop smiling as I saw the giant shade of yellow descended. Its gaze was fixed on Kara. The dragon roared. The collar on its neck was glowing darkish and sinister purple. A gust of wind was whipped up by wings and launched at me and Kara.

“Kara!” Remmy and her sister appeared from behind the waterfall alongside fifty other people as they rushed towards Kara. Half of them were holding their hands out as they muttered something. Just before the wind could reach Kara, its path was blocked by a giant umbrella of transparent barrier. Some of the wind caused giant turbulence as it reached towards the waterfall.

Remmy reached out Kara’s hand as they all stuck together alongside everyone. I could see a small transparent mouse on top of Remmy’s head as it disappeared. It was the same mouse that Kara used to attack the demon girl. Kara was successfully able to deliver a message using her electric mouse.

The thunder dragon looked at the situation with empty eyes as it opened its mouth as it roared. I looked at its action with amazed and excited eyes. The sheer size of the dragon was enough to make anyone shudder, yet everyone was ready to face it, albeit all of them had a lingering fear in their eyes.

“Call me if you need help, okay?” I silently whispered to Kara. Without a single noise, I teleported on top of the gigantic waterfall as I sat down with anticipation. Of course, I didn’t forget to bring popcorn with me. I could see Kara was shocked at first seeing my disappearance, but she remained calm. I made a promise with Kara that I would protect her, so I already took countermeasures with everything. I made sure that no one would seriously get injured even if the dragons attacked, but I wouldn’t help if it wasn’t a dire situation.

While sitting on top of the waterfall, I could see Kara was gathering everyone and preparing all the various kinds of races with wand and staff as they all pointed towards the dragon. However, before they could act, the dragon immediately flew towards the sky as its body was in contact with the clouds. It was flying with a crazed path as it tried to touch every cloud as it could.

For every cloud the dragon touched, it became gray and solemn. As it was flying around, I could see the dragon glancing towards my direction for a mere second. Without hesitation, the dragon scratched its claws in the air as the gray cloud discharged its lightning towards me.

“Bad boy! I’m not your opponent,” I spoke loudly, just enough so that the dragon could hear me. I simply shooed the dragon with a simple flick of hand as it dispelled the lightning while blasting the dragon unconscious towards the ground near where everyone was. The collar that was glowing darkish and sinister purple on the dragon’s neck stopped giving its ominous light.

“Now!” Seizing the opportunity, all of the mages that Kara gathered were shooting arrays of magic towards the dragon. I could see Remmy summoned a small meteor of fireball while her sister was continuously shooting arrows as it exploded after it was in contact with the dragon.

Everyone that was capable of melee combat also joined in as they swung their weapons towards the dragon. Clang! I could see the group of adventurers Kara and I met were struggling to hit the dragon’s scales as they hit them multiple times. Kara joined in as she tried to hit the dragon with her usual electric magic, but it did no damage.

The blue tiger launched itself towards the dragon’s thick scales with the intention of biting it. Yet, the dragon scales proved to be too tough for the tiger to bite, so he simply tried to scratch it with his claws.

The dragon’s eyes were awakening as the collar on its neck stopped its temporal dimness. The collar was once again glowed with darkish purple as the dragon’s silent eyes were opening towards the people that tried to attack it. The dragon’s roar was loud enough to make everyone near it close their ears. “Fall back!” The melee combatants rushed into defensive positions as they created a wall of protection for the rear of the group.

“Kara!” I could see Baiyun on the rear screamed at Kara being on the vanguard, running from the dragon. “I know, Lightning mouse!” I could see Kara yelled as she ran following the other melee combatants. While stomping the ground running, an army of mice came out of the ground as it ran everywhere on the battlefield.

The dragon finally had enough as it scratched its claw like before it did to me. The dark clouds from the sky were showing its bright light as lightning was coming from every direction of the sky. However, before they could even hurt anyone, a familiar warmth enveloped the entire battlefield with a gentle orange blockade. As I looked closer, a few dozen lanterns similar to the one I saw in the village seemingly appeared out of nowhere from the ground as it floated. At the center of it all, of the spread out floating lantern, I could see Baiyun was drawing some kind of magic circle on the ground as an unlit lantern was appearing from the magic circle.

Apparently, while everyone was attacking the dragon, Baiyun had been steadily creating numbers of lanterns as a countermeasure for defense against the dragon’s lightning. He was spreading them out on the battlefield to make sure everyone was covered. So the moment the dragon tried to attack, Kara’s lightning mouse was able to light up all of the lanterns Baiyun prepared.

Countless incoming lightning was striking the group of people on the ground as they were praying that the lightning didn’t penetrate the lanterns defense. Each moment passed, the bombardment of the lightning grew intense as rain started to pour down even harder. It was no longer a simple rain, but a complete thunderstorm.

I munched my popcorn while seeing the helpless people defending against the dragon. As the heavy rain started to annoy me, I materialized a super strong umbrella as I continued to watch the fight in silence. Curious, I used my power to sneak a peek on what was happening in the village. I could see that they were all evacuating using some secret path, and the lantern that was floating around the village was gathered to create a wall to deter the dragon.

The lanterns were slowly losing its light one by one after taking a beating from the dragon’s relentless lightning strike. Even with the mages' help creating a barrier to stop the dragon's attack, it was still a tough situation as the barrier from both the lantern and the mages were shaking. After a few more minutes of complete deafening thunder from the sky, the dragon finally stopped its attack.

Most of the mages dropped to their knees as they heaved a relief and exhaustion. Meanwhile, the dragon’s eyes weren’t too happy. Rather than anger, it was more of a painful expression on the dragon’s eyes.

“Mr. Dragon, please stop!” Kara screamed at the dragon.

However, it seemed to have no effect –no, the dragon twitched a little.Though it wasn’t clear whether or not that was caused by Kara’s scream. Even then, the dragon didn’t hesitate to flap its wings as it generated thousands of winds towards everyone on the ground as they barely hung on with the barrier. Once wasn’t enough, the dragon kept on flapping its wings twice, thrice and kept on doing that as the winds were blowing out the river and the waterfall.

“Seems like we bought enough time for everyone in the village to evacuate, let’s escape!” Remmy yelled just loud enough outside the volume range of the blazing sound of wind from the dragon. Unfortunately for everyone, the moment she said that, the dragon flew as it charged towards the group. Letting its gigantic body ram towards its smaller size opponents. Everyone instinctively went out of the path of the dragon as they rolled on the grounds after recklessly putting their way out of the dragon’s path.

“Mr. Dragon, please, mom said you’re friendly!” Kara yelled.

The dragon noticed Kara’s plea with a silent expression. Everyone was struggling to get up as the dragon was inching closer to Kara. “Kara, run!” Remmy said as she launched a powerful barrage of rocks from the ground, but the dragon took it without a scratch. Out of nowhere, Remmy’s blue tiger appeared as he snatched Kara by biting her outfit and ran away.

The dragon wasted no time as it stomped the ground with its powerful tail, creating an earthquake which made the blue tiger lose its footing and fall. Kara fell together with the tiger, and tried to get up as she saw the dragon was walking closer to her. The blue tiger’s instinct made him immediately stand in front of Kara as he tried to confront the dragon and protect Kara. Nevertheless, the dragon simply flickered its claws as it shoved the tiger away.

I could see everyone was struggling to stand up as they tried to walk and protect Kara. But it was too late, the dragon raised its claws as its darkish purple collar glowed heavily and swung its claws towards Kara. However, just before its claws could touch Kara, her necklace was glowing with a vibrant glow of color and quickly cleared away the gloomy sky and rain.

I watched the whole thing unfold while sipping some bubble tea from on top of the waterfall. That gem on Kara’s necklace was one of my countermeasures on making sure Kara was okay. Meanwhile, the diamond shaped gem cracked as the key inside it started to fall, however Kara’s alertness was able to make her catch the key. The vibrant glow from the gem was able to blind the dragon’s movement temporarily.

Kara immediately took the opportunity as her nimble movement was able to climb up the dragon’s body within seconds. The dragon started to move around, trying to get rid of Kara, but she refused to fall.

The dragon took off from the ground as it flew with all of its might, but that didn’t stop Kara from hanging on from the dragon. Kara spent all of her energy for her legs and arms to move upwards, while being careful not to slip off. She kept on climbing until she could finally reach out the part of the dragon’s neck.

“Mr. Dragon, please wake up!” Kara yelled as she put the key she was holding into the giant keyhole she found on the glowing collar. The moment she put it in, the collar lost all of its ominous color as it transformed into fragile glass, and broke. There were no longer any remains from the collar on the dragon’s neck.

“Aaah!” The moment the dragon lost its collar, Kara lost her footing and slipped out from the dragon’s neck as she fell at incredible speed. She glanced below herself to see a frightening sight of the strong current of the river. Long before she could even fall towards it, the dragon was able to swiftly catch Kara on its back.

“Are you okay?” The dragon said, as it found a nearby spot to land.

Feeling dizzy from what happened, Kara answered, “yes,” as she climbed off from the dragon’s back. She looked at the dragon as she smiled, and hugged its feet. There were no longer any kind of apathetic eyes from the dragon.

“Are you really okay, Selvye? You look a lot smaller than I remember,” The dragon asked. A worried expression surfaced on the dragon’s eyes. There was a dumbstruck moment in Kara’s expression as she muttered, “mom…?”

Kara had a puzzling face for a second, but she quickly realized. “Ah, no. My name is Kara, I'm her daughter, nice to meet you!”

As soon as she said that, I teleported myself besides Kara. She smiled at my appearance and immediately hugged me. I could tell that her strength was depleted, but she kept on hugging me intensely.

“You did well, Kara,” I said while patting Kara.

The dragon watched the interaction silently. It looked around to see the remnants of chaos that happened from earlier, which caused the eyes of the dragon to shift with anger. Kara noticed it and immediately tried to calm down the dragon.

I could see everyone was slowly getting up from the distance. Some of them were applying bandages and drinking an odd colored drink, perhaps medicines. When the battle started, some of the people were carrying rather large backpacks filled with medical supply.

I could see a similar face from a distance. Remmy was waving her arms towards Kara and me. I smiled and waved back at her as Kara did the same, perhaps signaling that everything was okay.

“Did I… cause this?” The dragon asked with a regretful tone as he watched the people taking care of themselves in the distance.

Kara hesitantly replied, “y-yes, but it wasn’t Mr. Dragon fault! It was that demon girl’s fault!”

Hearing the word demon, the dragon was roaring as the once cleared up sky was turning into a thundering sky. However, the dragon realized its consequences as it saw Kara putting her hand up to cover her ears. The quickly quenched its anger and apologized to Kara.

The dragon slowly walked towards the river as it saw the beautiful reflection of the moonlight and the shrine lantern that I placed earlier. As if it was sighing, the dragon put its majestic head down as Kara and I followed it.

“Are you okay, Mr. Dragon?” Kara asked.

The dragon shifted its eyes as it looked at Kara with a saddened look, “no… It’s just, I’m slowly remembering what had happened when I wasn’t in control.”

The dragon sat down as it continued to watch the strong current of the river as it looked brokenhearted. Kara watched the dragon with a complicated gaze, as she followed the dragon’s gaze and watched the river. Moments of silence continued as I also followed suit on watching the scenery in front of me.

“The longer I watch this river, the more I remember,” the dragon said, breaking the silence. There was intense emotion, filled with regret and anger inside the dragon’s eyes. The clouds even occasionally flickered a few thunder as if emphasizing with the dragon.

“Do you know where this is?” Kara asked curiously, changing the subject as we watched the river flow.

For the first time, I could see the dragon put up a relaxed state as its giant body was sitting with a calm atmosphere. The dragon was taking a calm and deep breath as the night breeze was passing by. It shifted its gaze into the waterfall with nostalgic eyes.

“The cave behind the waterfall is where I hatched.’
