Living Sword Pt. 5

Living Sword Pt. 5

Seph jumped out of the door and ran towards the wave of wyverns, completely void of all feelings of self preservation.

“That idiot…”

Fefnir shook his head, drawing his sword as well, but before he could walk out Letta caught his shirt.

“Y-you really think you’ll be ok?”

Fefnir shrugged.

“For him, it’s less about himself and more about these people… if that makes sense. He’s an idiot, he’s power hungry, all of the above that you could think about a person. Strangely enough he’s also caring though. Extremely. Sometimes it surprises even me and I’ve known him almost since we were born. That tongue in cheek attitude that he has is all just a facade, but he enjoys being a kind of villain. It’s almost hilarious to watch from the outside if I’m being honest. Anyways, time to kill some fucking wyverns.”

Letta simply blinked, surprised by the answer. Her grip loosened on Fefnir’s shirt and he smiled.

“Besides, we might not die.”

With a swish of his coat he was striding towards Seph who had arrived right outside the town and held his arms wide open as if he was about to receive a hug.

“C’mon you bastards!”

Letta could vaguely hear his shout as she bundled herself up. What the hell could she do about this? Those dumbasses were going to die if she didn’t do something… Not that she could really say she cared about two guys that tried to kidnap her… but the town mattered to her and honestly she didn’t really want them to get torn to shreds. At least not in her town. Besides, they were kind of the only defense against those wyverns and if they got through…

Letta’s head whipped around and saw faces in windows, staring out, wide eyed.

“Damn that Youkai…”

“Ahahaha! I haven’t felt this powerful in years!”

“Urf… shut up… Seph… you’ve never felt this powerful…”

Seph and Fefnir slashed through wyverns as the entire pack bore down on them. Luckily the wyverns were entirely focused on the two sword wielders, none of them targeting the town. It seemed that they wanted to take down the threats before moving to the prey. Made sense.

Seph slashed at necks, the power of Gram coursing through Joyeuse. For once it didn’t seem like the sword was all that crappy. He was glad that Joyeuse could suck up other swords, carrying two around would have been terrible.

“Watch it!”

Fefnir suddenly slashed right behind Seph’s back, a wyvern falling to the ground.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

“Seph I don’t know if we’re gonna be able to do this!”

“Nonsense! I’m a LeVay! You’re my knight!”

Seph deftly slung off two more wyvern heads and turned to the next, a scarred wyvern which looked to be larger than many of the others. If they could kill it there was a chance that the others would disperse. It acted like the alpha…

“Feffy! Alpha, it’s got scars and is big and stuff!”

“Could you… please stop talking like a five year old! There’s an alpha?”

Seph sighed, slashing down a wyvern at the stomach, and pointed with his sword at the alpha a few meters away. Fefnir’s eyes followed.

“An alpha. Great!”

Seph would have liked to puzzle out how an alpha could have grown to that size in his head, but at the moment there was a bit too much going on for any critical thinking. The only thoughts other than the battle that went through his head were how the how they would get to that alpha. Not only that, they’d have to kill it as well.

As Seph and Fefnir fought their way towards the alpha a thought quickly became prevalent in Seph’s mind. They weren’t going to make it. The more they stepped towards the alpha the more the wyverns were bent on protecting him. It was as if the alpha was a magnet drawing them towards him, sticking on his glistening scaly body and hissing with their fangs pointed towards the sword wielders.

“Seph?!

“Wha-?!”

“I think-!”

Just at that moment Seph saw what Fefnir was trying to point his attention to. Well, more like he heard it.

“RAAAAAAAH!!!”

“Shit.”

Not only was the alpha large and strong, it could breath fire. Breathing fire was something that very few wyverns could do, but the burning trees and grass near their feet made it evident that they had met one of the few that could do it. Sparing a glance at each other the two boys started calculating in their heads. To their knowledge neither of them could defeat a dragon and this wyvern was just about as close to one as you could get. The ice wall would have tilted the odds in their favor, but only if it had been used in a cave, something that couldn’t be made of use at the moment.

As they continued to kill the smaller wyverns the alpha began to walk forward, slowly, so as to not get the boys’ attention. It was likely going to try and snipe them with a couple well placed fireballs. Killing wyverns up close was hard enough, but dodging fireballs? Fefnir became less and less confident as the fight went on. Going against the dragon was one thing, they could likely escape if things went bad and perhaps gone to get help. This situation was completely different. Should Seph and Fefnir decide they couldn’t defeat the wyvern pack they would open up the city to their destruction. Not good…

BOOM!

Yep, there was a fireball. They sounded like bombs coming from the alpha’s stomach, very powerful.

BOOM!

Damn that was right next to Seph’s feet!

BOOM!

Seph felt the ground under his feet lift up and he was tossed to the ground in a wave of heat and dirt. Fefnir immediately put himself between Seph and the wyverns, protecting him. Seph tried to get up, but something had happened to his leg. Probably a burn or a slash, he could barely move.

“Rahhh….”

Seph, barely conscious, lifted his head to look around at the strange noise. Bringing his gaze to Fefnir he saw his friend fighting off dozens of wyverns, taking a few scratches every time he turned away from one. They weren’t going to make it… Not this time…

“Rahhh….”

“What…”

Seph rolled his head to the side and remembered something. The alpha was still stalking them. He could practically see the old bastard smile as it opened it’s mouth and readied a fireball. Huh, he never thought he’d die to these idiotic wyverns. Maybe a god, maybe some sort of powerful Youkai, but not this. Either way, he closed his eyes and accepted it.

BOOOOOMMMM!

Wait… that was… quite a lot louder than the alpha’s fireball.

“Izzat an… angel?”

With that, Seph fell unconscious.
