Chapter 29: The Drift

Chapter 29: The Drift

It was a Saturday night, Alice was scrolling on her phone on her bed, brain-rotting on Ticking. Then suddenly she got a text from a friend on the grid.

"Hey Alice, are you up?" Kara texted her.

Alice was surprised to see Kara Fujiwara, her rival and friend, texted her out of the blue. She immediately opened Whats'up and replied to her.

"Yeah, I'm up. What's up?" Alice asked her.

"I was wondering if you'd like to come with me to a drift competition tomorrow morning." Alice asked her.

"You drift Kara?" Alice asked her.

"Of course I do! So do you want to join me?" Kara asked her.

Alice began checking to see if her schedule was free. She noticed that she only had to do her English homework and pushed it aside.

"Yeah, I could. When are we going?" Alice asked her.

"Really? Great! Meet me at the Kota City's metro. See you there!" Kara told her.

The next day, Alice took the train to Kota City's Metro. She got off the train and headed to the lobby. As she stood there, she got a text from Kara.

"I'm outside the Metro, meet me at the car park." Kara told her.

"Ah, okay, I'll come outside." Alice replied.

Alice made her way to the car park, where she saw Kara in a modified GT86. It has a wide body structure and is coated in black. The colors were a bit fated, seemingly left unattended. Alice looked in awe and went up to it.

"Woah Kara, is this yours?" She said in admiration.

"It used to, I sold this car to a friend after I left for England. Then I asked if I could borrow it and he said sure. I'm surprised it was still intact!" Kara told her.

"Wait, so this is your car! It looks so cool with the wide body structure." Alice said to her.

"Thanks, shall we go?" Kara said to go.

"Yep, let's go!" Alice agreed to her.

Kara and Alice got in the car and she started the car. The GT86 engine roared as Kara revved it up. Alice enjoys the sounds of the car.

"Hold on Alice." Kara told her.

"Eh? Why?" Alice muttered,

Before saying anything, Kara suddenly stepped on the pedal and the GT86's rear wheel started spinning, producing smoke into the air. Alice who was not prepared held onto the passenger handle. Kara exited the parking lot and onto the main road, there were no cars in sight and Kara continued to drift on the exit and onto the Highway.

"Kara slow down!" Alice screamed at her.

They drove on the highway and made their way to a stadium where the drift was held. Alice stepped out of the car shivering. Still frightened by Kara's driving.

"We're here Alice, hey you okay?" Kara asked her.

"H-How is your driving license not suspended yet?" Alice said to her.

"I'm just good at avoiding the police I guess?" Kara told her.

Alice smelt burned rubber in the air and the sounds of scratching tires throughout the stadium area. Alice and Kara went over to the source of the sounds and saw a Nissan 350z and a Silvia S14 battling it out on the track. Alice and Kara watched in awe and saw how cool they were. As Alice stood there, Kara had to go somewhere.

"Hey Alice, I need to go somewhere for a bit, I'll call you when I'm finished okay?" Kara told her.

"Ah sure, I'm probably just going to watch them fight then. See ya later." Alice told her.

As Kara left, Alice went near the track to get a closer look. She squeezed through dozens of people until eventually getting to the front of the crowd. There she could practically inhale the reminisce of the rubber from the wheels. The cars tandem drifted close to the barrier and the crowd was cheering them on.

"Man they're pretty fearless, they were practically touching the barriers!" Alice muttered to herself.

The track was filled with smoke and Alice couldn't see any of the cars on the track. The speakers there began announcing some driver's names. Suddenly Alice got a notification of a text from her phone.

"Hey Alice, you still at the track?" Kara asked her on the messaging app.

"Yeah, I'm still here." Alice told her.

"Great, make sure you watch this." Kara told her.

As soon as she read the text, she suddenly heard the speaker announcing a familiar name.

"A British driver from England with her GT86, contender for the ROA Cup, Kara Fujiwara!" The announcer said.

As soon as she heard this, she looked over the barrier and saw the black GT86 standing side by side with a red GT86. Alice looked on as she saw the cars drive towards the starting line. They stood there for a while and the lights went out and the drift battle began.

The GT86s were neck and neck with each other until a corner. They let the rear let lose and they drift side by side into the corner, a tandem drift. The crowd cheers as they make their way onto a straight. They both rotated their car early and entered a second corner, the track began fogging up as they drifted around the circuit. The clouds went over to them and made it hard to see. The spectators from Alice's view thought they couldn't see them anymore, and then suddenly a beam of light could be seen through the smoke.

The GT86s suddenly burst out of the fog, nearly inches from the barrier where Alice was standing. The momentum of the drift caused a small opening to form and Alice saw the GT86s rear of a split moment. They pass by Alice and slowly decelerate their cars as they cross the finish line. The crowd erupts into cheer as the battle ends.

"W-Woah..." Alice muttered in shock.

Alice noticed Kara driving off the track and heading towards a nearby parking lot from a distance. Alice made her way out of the crowd and went to Kara's car. As she approached her car, she saw Kara stepping out and removing her helmet. Alice excitedly went over to her.

"Kara you were so cool!" Alice said to her.

"Ah, thanks Alice. I was a bit rusty out there but I managed to hold through." Kara told her.

"What do you mean? I thought you did pretty well! You guys were so close to the barrier that I thought you guys would kill us!" Alice said to her.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Aww thanks, I tried not to hit the barrier this time." Kara chuckled.

As they were talking, the red GT86 came and parked right beside them. The driver came out and walked towards them.

"Pretty good drifting out there." The driver said to her.

"Ah, thanks, man! You did well too. Sadly I feel like I'm going to get low marks for the few mishaps I did."

They shared a quick laugh before the man suddenly looked towards Alice. He seemed to recognize her but couldn't tell where. He then realizes who she is and starts a conversation with her.

"You're that girl that won round 1 right?" The man asks her.

Alice was surprised when the man seemed to recognize her in public.

"Ah yes, I was that driver. How did you know?" Alice asked him.

"I saw you on KamuTube on one of the interviews. I watched your race and love your racing style. I'm honestly a fan." The man told her.

"You're a fan of me?" Alice asked him.

"Yep, I hope to see you race more, Alice Shah." The man told her.

Alice was over the moon when she heard that, she remained calm and acted casually.

"Ah, thank you. I hope you will keep supporting me." Alice told him.

"You bet, I hope to see you succeed. Well, I need to get going now, it was an honor meeting you!" The man told her.

The man went back into his car and drove off. Kara went over and placed her hands on her shoulders.

"Seems like someone is famous." Kara said to her.

"Eh? I'm not that famous. He just watched a video or two." Alice said to her.

Alice looked on as the red GT86s disappeared into the horizon. Alice and Kara entered the car and sat there for a bit. Then suddenly Kara had an idea.

"Hey Alice, wanna try drifting a drift car?" Kara suggested.

"B-But I don't really know how to drive this thing. I'm scared I would crash into a pole or something." Alice slightly chuckled.

"Come on, it's just like driving a race car, it's easy." Kara assures her.

Kara and Alice switched places and Kara began explaining some of the basics of drifting a drift car. After trying to understand what Kara was saying, Alice began driving slowly around the parking lot.

"Alright Alice, around this corner, I want you to pull the E brake and counter-steer." Kara told her.

Alice nodded and they began approaching the corner, Alice with a bit of hesitation pulled the E-Brake and the car slipped through the corner. Alice who was internally panicking remains calm and counter-steers. Alice managed to straighten up the car again, tho Kara was a bit more frightened than usual.

"O-Okay, it wasn't the worst drift but you could do better. Let's try again." Kara told her.

They drifted around the corner for a few more times and Alice managed to get a hang of it. She managed to hold a drift around a corner as if she was one of the professional drifters.

"That was pretty good not gonna lie. Want to keep going?" Kara asked her.

"Nope!" Alice said immediately.

Alice stopped the car and went out. They swapped seats and Kara is now driving.

"I'd like to stick with normal racing, thank you very much." Alice told her.

"Aww, I thought you were starting to love it, oh well." Kara said to her.

"It's fun! Just not for me." She told her.

Kara began driving Alice back to the Metro. Alice looked out the window quietly as the city lights reflected on her face. As they were in the car, Kara decided to strike up a conversation.

"So Alice, how does it feel like to have someone that you don't know support you?" Kara asked her.

Alice was caught off guard by the question, she began thinking of an answer to satisfy Kara's question.

"W-Well, I was not expecting any support from anyone other than my friends and family. It feels wholesome, to root for a random stranger you don't know much of." Alice told her.

"Ah I see, that's a pretty innocent answer." Kara told her.

Alice looked in confusion as to what she meant.

"What do you mean 'innocent answer'?" Alice asked her.

"It's nothing really, you just look cute when you say that." Kara told her.

Alice flustered slightly and decided to change the topic.

"Alright alright enough about me, when did even start drifting Kara?" Alice asked her.

Kara thought for a while before coming up with an answer.

"When I was in England, my dad taught me to drive his old car down some road when I was 11. When I was 13, I snuck out of the house and drove with my friends. I think I was about 14 when I started before he made me transfer to Akinabalu to attend the racing academy. During my academy days, I would sneak out of the facility and join an illegal drifting community. Hence why I managed to convince my father to get me this GT86." Kara told her.

"You were one troublesome kid Kara." Alice teased her.

"Hey what can you say, I was a rebel." Kara casually said.

As they talked, they noticed a red and blue light flashing behind them.

"Crap, it's the police!" Kara said to her.

"Eh? Why are they pulling you over?" Alice asked her.

Suddenly Kara remembered she had forgotten to put the original plate back on her car.

"I-I forgot about the plate..." Kara told her.

"Isn't that a fine? Your Racing license will be suspended if they fine you. You might miss round 2 of the ROA Cup!" Alice said, slightly panicking.

Kara remained calm for a while before she talked to Alice.

"Alice, I know it might be unethical but we need to lose them." Kara told her.

Alice's eyes widened as she heard Kara's crazy plan to lose the cops.

"W-What? If you get caught, you might go to jail as well!" Alice told her.

"Alice, do you trust me?" Kara asked her in a serious tone.

Alice thought for a while before nodding her head, trusting her completely.

"Alright Alice, hold on!" Kara told her.

Kara began speeding up and suddenly they could hear the sirens blasting from behind. Alice was internally panicking while Kara remained calm throughout the chase. The sound of the boxer engine roars through the city as the sirens blast behind it.

"Alright Alice, I'm going to lose them now." Kara told her.

Alice nodded and held onto the holder. She felt the GT86 was going faster than ever and was slowly gapping the police. Kara suddenly switched off the car's headlights and seemingly disappeared into the dark. The cops were left speechless as the car seemingly disappeared into thin air. Alice could only see a pitch-dark road dimly lit by the street lights.

"K-Kara, we can't see anything ahead of us!" Alice told her

"Don't worry Alice, we're close to freedom now!" Kara reassures her.

Kara turned her headlights back on, the police car noticed that she was way ahead of them and decided to push on the pedal. As they try to catch up, the car disappears momentarily before reappearing again. The police who were chasing them thought it was an act of provoking them and decided to charge in faster. Kara saw a left-hand exit to her right and decided to do it one last time. Kara closed the headlights again and turned them on just before the exit. The cops began speeding on the highway and noticed that the lights ahead were gone.

"W-Where did they go?" The cops muttered to themselves.

Kara managed to lose the cops by turning off the lights last second before immediately changing to the exit lane on the left. Kara went to make their way towards a parking lot and parked there. Kara's hands were a bit shaken as she got out of the car.

"Man, this feels like the old days! Hey Alice we're here." Kara told her.

Kara noticed that Alice wasn't stepping out and went to inspect her. There she noticed Alice was frozen in her seat, still shaking from fear.

"You okay Alice?" Kara asked her.

"Y-Yeah, I am..." Alice told her.

Alice opened the door slowly and stepped out of the car, she suddenly stumbled forward and kneeled on the floor. Kara noticed her stumbling and went to check on her. She held her hands to see if she was alright.

"Holy crap Alice, are you actually okay? I can take you to the hospital if you want?" Kara said to her.

"N-No need. I'm just still shaken that's all." Alice said reassuring her.

"Sorry Alice that you had to go through this. I didn't mean for you to get into this much trouble." Kara said to her, feeling guilty.

Alice began standing up, a bit wobbly but she managed to stand up straight.

"It was a stupid idea, Kara. I wouldn't have thought you'd go to this length and risked your life." Alice told her.

"I know, it was my fault. I'm sorry for putting you in danger." Kara told her.

Alice felt a bit guilty seeing her putting herself down. She decides to lift her spirits a bit.

"But if you haven't done that, your license would've been suspended and you couldn't race. Which I also didn't want to happen." Alice told her.

Kara looked at Alice seeing her put on a brave face. She felt a weird feeling of comfort as she held her hands.

"I know you had to do what you had to do, Kara. But promise me you won't do this again!" Alice told her.

Kara stood there, contemplating all her actions that had led to this. Kara shed a small tear and hugged Alice.

"I-I promise, Alice, I'll not do it again!" Kara told her, breaking down.

Alice was surprised by her sudden hug but she embraced it. Alice comforted Kara while she let it all out. After what she felt like an eternity, Kara finally let go of her.

"Man, I haven't cried like this since forever. Thanks, Alice." Kara told Alice, still a bit stuffy.

"No problem. I'm glad I could be a shoulder to cry on." Alice told her.

Alice checked her phone and noticed that she could be late to catch the final bus that goes to her home if she doesn't get on the train on time.

"Crap, I need to get back to the Metro!" Alice said, slightly panicking.

"The metro is a couple of blocks here. You can catch the train if we run." Kara told her.

Alice nodded and they began running towards the Metro. Once they arrived, Alice managed to buy a ticket that was about to leave in 5 minutes. Alice turned towards Kara and hugged her. Kara was surprised by the hug and embraced it.

"Thanks for today Kara, it was really fun." Alice told her.

"It sure was. Sorry again for the trouble." Kara said.

"It was chaotic, but I had a good time." Alice replied with a smile on her face.

Kara was happy to hear it. Alice waved goodbye to Kara and went on a train to her town. Kara, on the other hand, went back to her car and began driving back home. They both stared outside their windows, and a shooting star passed by. They looked at each other awed before they returned to their respective homes.
