Chapter 12: I can do magic!

Zephyr stared at his reflection in complete silence.

It wasn't just his hair that changed color but also his eyes.

It was hard to tell their exact color in the reflection, but they were definitely not black anymore.

“Have I become an awakened too?....”

He could hardly believe it despite seeing it with his own two eyes.

He had become an awakened human, there was no doubt about that.

All humans had black hair and eyes. Any change of color was a clear indicator of the awakening of magic in that person.

“But I have never heard of a change in hair color….” This was new to him.

He didn't know what to feel right now.

A part of him had always craved for this… to awaken a hidden power inside him. To be more than just a servant for his aunt and uncle… and do something more important with his life, like that person from his dreams, but...

But this was also a huge problem. Magic was forbidden for humans… if anyone saw him now, he would be reported to the Celestial Beings and arrested.

“Like they did with Dalia and Bill….”

His situation is even worse. They may already suspect him for the death of Thomas but if they also find he is an awakened...

“They will think I attacked them with my magic, like Bill did a year ago.”

The worst part was that he didn't even have any magic.

“Wait… could it be?... that light that I saw was my doing?”

Could he have killed the sea monster by accident with his magic?

He had first assumed that the monster had been killed by that woman who spoke to him, but perhaps he had been wrong all along.

Zephyr glanced at his hands and then back at his reflection on the water.

He focused on his eyes, trying to discern their exact color but it was difficult for some reason.

The color of the eyes was an indication of which one of the four elements that person could use.

Orange for fire, blue for water, green for wind, and yellow for earth.

His eyes looked almost blue but much clearer.

He remembers vividly the eyes Dalia had when she awoke. They were blue like the sky.

His own eyes were definitely not that. And that light that killed the monster was not water, that was for sure.

“They voice said something back then… she said… lightning!”

As he spoke the word, sparks of electricity appeared on the surface of his hands.

“Ahh!” Zephyr got startled and tried to shake them off him for fear of being hurt.

But just a moment later… the sparks disappeared by themselves.

He examined his hands but could not find any damage on them and did not feel any pain either.

“Was that… magic?.” It was the only possible explanation.

He extended his hands and once again said the word out loud. “Lightning!”

Now that he was paying more attention, he could feel something running through his body and toward his hands before the sparks appeared.

He stared with amazement. “I'm doing magic!”

Not only that but he was using an element outside the four.

But like before, the sparks disappeared without causing any damage. “Am I doing something wrong?”

He must be… this is different than the one he saw the day before.

That one had been powerful enough to kill that giant monster.

Unfortunately, he could not stay here in the open much longer. Someone could see him here.

He did not have a clear destination in mind any longer but he had to get further away from the village so he grabbed his bag and started walking.

His initial plan had been to travel to Zloria Town towards the northwest and make a living there.

But the risk of being recognized by some traveling merchant was too high.

This would not have mattered if he had just left the village, but the death of those three boys had complicated things.

The second plan had been to travel to Elmeria Village, which is much further away and thus… much safer to be in.

But now that he had become an awakened human… no town, village, or city would ever be safe for him to live in.

Any human who sees his eyes will immediately report him to the authorities.

“Where should I go then?... is there any place where I could live or… should I just turn myself in?”

The idea crossed his mind.

Perhaps the safest road ahead for him was traveling to Zloria Town and turning himself into the Celestials.

No one knew for sure what happened to the awakened. Some believe they are executed or imprisoned for life, but maybe that is not the case.

“I also have different elements…” Something told him that was not a good thing.

They may want to use him for experiments or something like that.

The Celestial Beings did not seem to care much for their lives, as long as they served a purpose for them.

“No… I won't turn myself in…” Zephyr decided.

But then his other option was just to wander the wilderness and hide for the rest of his life.

That was not a great prospect…

But then an idea came to his mind. “The Wall!”

There was one more direction he could go… south.

Traveling south beyond the Wall was considered a great crime, worthy of immediate execution.

Not that many were willing to go there anyway.

The lands beyond the wall are considered to be inhabitable.

The Celestials always told them that the poison cloud created during the “Great Sin” still remains there to this day.

And that anyone who went beyond the protection of the wall will suffer a very painful death.

“But… what if it's not true?” Zephyr wondered.
