17. The Shadow rose

17. The Shadow rose

I had another dream later, I was in my room again, shrouded in darkness but something was different, I felt no sense of familiarity or intoxication, I felt disoriented and very afraid. I started to question whether this was even my own room.

As I scanned for something or anything I could recognize my eyes fell upon a dark shape crouched in the corner, a deeper shadow within the darkness.

The longer I looked at it the more I began to be able to make out the edges of empty eye sockets, a mop of red hair and lips that stretched to expose a rictus grin full of faintly glinting teeth.

The shadow rose, standing upright so tall that it had to hunch down beneath the ceiling.

In terror I turned around and faced the other way in my bed, pulling my sheets over my head in some hopeless attempt to protect myself.

I heard wet footsteps pacing on the floor, coming towards me. And then a pressure on the bed as something pressed down on the mattress beside me.

For a few moments I could hear a deep, wet, panting breath only inches away and then the movement of moist lips and teeth as it spoke.

As It spoke right into my ear.

“Thank you.”
