Chapter 17: So Many Rats

Chapter 17: So Many Rats

Irie walks through the dungeon, heading down a long, yellowish corridor. She casually glances at her smartphone as she walks, her shoes lightly tapping upon the floor. A map displays on her smartphone’s screen, helping to guide her onward.

Behind the tall, elven woman, you walk, your stride relaxed. Koko, your girlfriend and fellow squadmate, travels beside you. The petite, feline woman swishes her tail excitedly as she looks around, her eyes wide with interest. You bring your hand to your mouth, giggling at the sight of her. She kind of looks like an overexcited tourist to tell the truth. It’s rather ironic since she has been in the dungeon longer than you have.

You continue walking down a long, yellow hall with the rest of your group, Irie still in the lead. You glance to a torch mounted upon the wall as you continue forward. Though you may not know how it actually works, the dungeon’s lighting can vary based on the time of day. At night, parts can get quite dark. Since it’s morning for now, a nice amount of light shines forth from the torches.

Irie leads your squad past another side passage. As you pass said passage, you glance down it with a touch of nervousness. You don’t really expect much trouble, but this is the dungeon. There could be ferals lurking around every corner. As it turns out, though, your pink eyes find nothing other than an empty-looking passage branching off from this one, definitely nothing to worry about. Irie leads you past it, her purple eyes going back to her smartphone. Thus far, your group has only encountered a few succubi on this outing. Irie currently holds the drops of the unlucky succubi in her backpack.

The elven woman leading your group comes to a sudden stop. You follow her lead, but since Koko looks a little oblivious, you grab her arm bringing the cat girl to a stop as well. Your pink eyes follow Irie’s gaze to a side passage just a short distance ahead. Though you can’t see into it from here, you can hear a skittering coming from it. Judging from how Koko’s ears are twitching, you can guess she hears it too. Something is coming.

[Class: Giant Rat

Strength: Lvl 3

Mind: Lvl 1

Soul: Lvl 2]

The giant rat rushes out of the side passage, coming to a stop a bit before Irie. A cold sensation washes over you when you behold the creature, and you find yourself taking a jerky step back. It’s not that the rat seems all that fearsome in and of itself. It’s just that this same type of creature had been in those nightmares. Your stomach churns a bit as you recall the second nightmare, as you recall a giant rat biting into Koko. Please don’t let it eat her.

Koko glances at you (a confused look to her eyes) before turning back to the rat. “I got this!” she says, darting to the rat blocking your group’s path.

You cover your eyes at her voice. Surely, she’ll handle this just fine. Surely, nothing bad will happen to her. A notable thud follows a surprised squeak, and you peek through your fingers. Koko has handled it without a problem, a [Rat’s Fur] drop at her feet. Guess you really were worried for nothing. Irie steps forward and picks up the big ball of black fur before poking it into her backpack.

With a furious squeak, a second giant rat comes barreling for Irie. The tan-skinned elf stiffens up, readying her staff. Expertly, she catches it under its chin with the tip of her weapon, flipping it up onto its hind legs. Its belly exposed, she slams her right palm into said belly and activates her burn skill. The thing squeaks in terror as Irie’s flames consume it. The next moment, a [Rat’s Fur] drops to the yellowish, stone floor. Smiling, the elven woman plucks the drop up and puts it away.

These rats really don’t seem that powerful. Just as the thought occurs to you, yet another giant rat scurries out, this one looking right at you. Seriously, what is with all these rats? Maybe this is just the part where you and your squad are supposed to show your skills or something. Guess that means its your turn.

Sporting a cocky grin, you step forward. “I’ll deal with this one, guys.” You raise your hands, your fingerless gloves on them. “My turn to show off.” You rush the rodent, bounding towards it. You throw a punch but just manage to clip the beast due to it pulling back. Well, that could have gone worse. “Wait. Is it … shadowboxing?” A sweatdrop rolls down your temple. “I think my rat is broken,” you add in monotone. Before you, said rat has reared up on its hind legs and is frantically punching the air. After cracking your knuckles, you twist around, slamming your right foot into its belly. The creature goes down like a bag of bricks, a [Rat’s Fur] quickly replacing it.

“Well, that was weird.” You bend over and pick the drop up before turning to Irie. “Here.” You hand the [Rat’s Fur] to the elf, who quickly sticks it in her backpack. “Oh, you have to be kidding me!” you exclaim as you notice two additional rats, this time behind you. Neither Koko nor Irie look too pleased either. Seriously, why so many rats?

You and your two squadmates prepare to take on the rodent duo, but then a third giant rat shows up. Then even more began to stream into the corridor to join the growing rat army. Seriously, why so many rats? You sweatdrop as you stare in dumbfounded horror.

“Run!” Irie screams, her voice snapping you out of your stupor. With neither you nor Koko disagreeing, the three of you abruptly about face and begin fleeing down the corridor, a squeaking mess of rats giving chase.
