Chapter 9: backstory

Chapter 9: backstory

When I woke up, I saw that the group were sleeping, meaning I probably slept for 4 hours seeing as the sun hadn't risen and wouldn't do so for an hour. As I got up, I looked at my right hand to see how much had regenerated.i had regained about a nail's length of skin and muscle back. I then heard shuffling coming from the bed, Seicig lying on it. She was in a night gown With simple but elegant designs of begonias and daffodils.

Without making noise, I walked out of the room to find some food, which I desperately needed after not eating for a few hours.

Walking to the bar in the inn, I found an enormous empty table, presumably resumed for parties, and ordered a... MEAT. MEAT.

-get you some damn meat.-

You don't have to tell me, I know.

They had meats. I got meats. Whilst I was waiting for my food, I entered my mind on the request of Reivi.

"Couldn't you just have said it to me outside?" I was a little annoyed at that but he quickly pointed to a crack in my domain. "I hope we have some mind insurance." Still he made no sense, but I approached the crack, and with each step, I felt angrier at the group, probably plotting to kill me, They tried and failed, but they won't fail again. That humming won't stop. Stop Humming. STOP IT!

Reivi pulled me back. the rift was the reason behind my burst of anger, I stepped back.

"What caused this?" Reivi just shrugged, knowing just as much as me in this case. "Maybe a remnant of Seicig's mind left an imprint here, but highly unlikely, Horrible brain maintenance, or... your anger is mutating." Reivi looked at me and I could see his eyes twitching out of control "Wait, what do you mean by that?" I heard footsteps approaching me.

"Damn. Did you order this for all of us?" Varr was the one to ask first. I just sighed loudly. "Did you seriously think I ordered all this for us? It's for me. All of it." I looked at him with a straight face. I heard all of them whisper something like is he crazy? or maybe it's a joke. "How can you eat this much and not explode?" I don't remember when Djarfr started caring for me.

"I need a lot of food to function, and I'm hungry." They looked at me, still scared of me, but for a different reason now. "Wouldn't you get fat? You wouldn't be that fast if you were bloated, right?" Seicig was full of questions today.

"I doubt it" they looked like they understood and they walked over to the counter to order food for themselves. I suddenly felt a violent compulsion to eat.

-Trust your instincts, You're hungry. When you are in need of food, your mind prioritizes food, so you feel a weird urge to stuff your face full of food.-

I slowly took a fork and a knife in my hands and shakily started cutting the food and eating it. My hands didn't want to do as I told them. Funny how I was taught to kill which I was a natural at, and yet table manners escaped me in these 3 years. Closing my eyes, I quietly slammed the utensils down on the table, which were a bit louder than I anticipated, and grabbed the food with my hands and just ate. All the flavors mixed and exploded in my mouth as I put more in my mouth. People looked at me eating and were in a mixed state of astonishment, awe and horror. The group came over with their food and almost dropped them from their hands at the visage of a thirty three year old man shoveling food into his mouth and drinking large bottles of drinks as if his life depended on it.

"Don't you think you could share a bit of food?" Milder was in a sleeping gown made of wool, he had messy short brown hair with mutton chops along an uneven jaw, His eyes were brown and he had neck stubble.

-I don't see why people make fun of neckbeards, or why people have to keep removing neckbeards, they are still beards.-

"Why would I need to do that? You already got some food and you get served breakfast every morning. Also, Seicig, where were you yesterday at night?" Although I had my mouth full of food the whole time, I could still pronounce everything normally by putting food in my cheeks and chewing to the rhythm of words. "What? I fell asleep when you came with the soporific and I woke up earlier this morning, after sunrise. Why do you ask?" Saethwyr looked a bit angry at me for asking her that but I ignored that.

"Oh nothing, I just saw a really stupid forest nympho. She must have seen me with you and thought we were in love so she mimicked your form and tried to seduce me while I was bathing in a river yesternight. So I ran away because if it was you I would have killed a person in cold blood and broken a promise." I finished eating the food.

-You ran away because you were nervous to see a naked woman that wasn't your now ex wife despite killing bathing women before and you and we both know that's true.-

Leave me alone.

"Wait if there is a forest nymph- Did you just say nympho? Nymphs are dangerous, we should tell the burgomaster." After finishing licking the plates and my hands clean, I walked over to the waitress and looked at her. "Thank you for the food. Do you have anything sweet?" The chair invited me back to a resting spot.

Seicig took a chair and sat next to me. "Who were you married to before?" She was annoying me and I contemplated hitting her, but I refrained just before I did something I would regret. "Yes."

"What was she like?"

"The most patient and kind woman I have ever met."

"Where was she from?"

"Enough questions, look the food's coming." The cart with a large mold lying down came to my table and the chef came with the waitress and the owner and tried to lift it. They put it on the table and lifted the mold off to see a wobbling monstrosity of cream, sugar, cornstarch and almonds. "Could you get me a large spoon if you have any." Seicig nudged me. "And some normal size spoons as well, please." The trio rushed to get a large spoon and walked back with what I asked for.

"Will you answer my question now?"

"Linr. Happy?"

"I've never heard of that place. Is it overseas?"

"If I let you eat this dessert with me, will you shut up about my past?" She nodded and took the large spoon before I swatted her hand and took it for myself, scooping up an enormous piece and balanced it on my spoon before throwing it up and making it fall in my mouth, sliding down my throat and then I swallowed. Seicig looked at me, laughing as she took a piece and ate it. "Can you tell me about your past? I did tell you about mine." Although Seicig was pissing me off, she had a point.

-Come on, you have to tell somebody. If you just bottled up your emotions forever, you would suffer much worse. Or maybe you're afraid she's gonna going to realize what you truly are.-

"Later. Now, surrounded by lots of people, some would either get angry and form a mob or get bounty hunters on my ass."

"Was your past that violent?"

"..."

"Please tell me."

"later."

When we finished half of it, The rest of the group took a spoon. "You two have had enough, let us have some." Seicig and I walked back to my room for another session of her idea of therapy to help me. When we got in there, she sat on the bed and I sat on a chair next to the bed. "What did you mean your past was violent?"

"Remember the massacre overseas of that colony? That was me. the death of the lady who drank blood of young women? Me. The holy punishment of the fallen church? Me." She took a second to register before widening her eyes and her heartbeat got a lot faster. "Oh My Goodness. Why?" She almost cried. I just moved my chair and leant back. "I was doing my job." She was crying now.

"How could you kill so many people and not feel a shred of remorse?"

"I simply did what was asked of me by my peers."

"What peers?"

"Other kings. Jealous kings."

"What does that mean?

"They trained and employed me after being sold by my family. I had nothing else."

"That doesn't excuse you killing hundreds."

"More like a little bit over a thousand."

"EVEN WORSE! DON'T YOU EVER THINK THAT FAMILIES WOULD FEEL LIKE YOU DID WITH YOUR WIFE!?"

"Oh, I kill the wives and children too. But the point is, I kill. I know that, and yet you predent you don't do the same."

"DO WE KILL PEOPLE BECAUSE IT'S OUR JOB!?"

"What I did is but a footnote compared to what the other kingdoms did, and that's excluding the torture."

Seicig calmed herself down by inhaling and exhaling deeply. "What did you mean it was your job to kill?"

"Ever heard of the silent wardens?"

"No?"

"They are the kingdom of man's ultimate defense against threats, exceptional at assasinations and genocide, but we were the elite among the elite. I was their strongest asset in years because of my great skill. The only reason I left was because of my wife."

"Who was she?"

"The princess of Linr."

"What is Linr?"

----------------------------------------

From the books of the Library of Hirzla

To the west of the Blackguard forest, the center of Aldrfold, lied the kingdom of Linr, where slavery was outlawed and nobles treated like men, the king had found a corpse, barely breathing, on the shore. Believing the man a victim of the massacre overseas, he took him in and nursed him back to health, hopeful to bring back just a small sliver of culture of the now extinct colony. The man had hair like gold, a trait of the pyromancers down south, scars that were more than one man could possibly carry on him, and weapons sticking out of every part of him, like a sewing pin cushion, yet he was still fighting for his life.

The king was adamant on helping any injured person and helping a pyromancer could potentially strengthen any peaceful bonds between them, but the princess was the one with the questions and curiosity. When he was nursed back to health, the princess bombarded him with various questions like what happened and did you see who did this, but he stayed silent. When she asked him what his name was, he simply denied having one ever.

A kingdom like this attracted many people who had nowhere else to go. It started as a prison valley and turned into a kingdom. Their king's line were the children of the man who freed them not though blood and iron, but lavish gifts and the promise of independence. The last king adhered strongly to those principles.

When another kingdom pleaded for help from Linr, the king refused to go against the enemy, who had great bonds with his kingdom. Backstabbing was not something the king would do, not against anyone.

The princess was still nursing the survivor back to a healty state, and she grew more affectionate of him each day that passed. When the young man was back to a healthy state, he left without a word. This greatly saddened the princess who, after helping him and nursing him back to health was left lonely. She stayed in her room for days, only coming out to eat. Time passed and The princess seemed hopeful he would return so she could know his name, for she never heard it.

Then, one day, The young man arrived. People flocked to see the man who seemingly came back from the dead come back, probably to thank the king and princess for their act of kindness. He walked through the city to the castle where he was stopped by none, for everyone had heard of him. When the princess saw him, she was delighted to see him and quickly ran to him, embracing him and kissed him on his lips. He returned the kiss and declared that he had decided to stay.

This time when the princess asked for his name, he once again said he had none, so she gave him a name herself. She married him and they lived happily together, before it all changed into a nightmare, and the wolf shed its sheeps wool. he killed her father in cold blood.

The monster and the princess disappeared without a trace and, without a leading figure, a noble from another kingdom came to rule Linr and with people who opposed him, dungeons were made underground to hold any people who went against his rule and everything that the kinngdom once opposed, became its new founding principles.

And then, Linr perished from the annals of history, now only a place of unhappiness and slavery.

No one knows where the monster and the princess disappeared, but it was rumored that it ate her.
