Chapter 14

POV: Seicig

I kept seeing weird remnants of something in my sleep. I knew it wasn't from my memories, but then from who? I was suddenly in a small cottage. I saw a bed in the room with a woman screaming and giving birth on top and a man with long golden hair sitting next to her, holding her hand. "You can do it, push!" He sounded a lot like Kykvendi, but his hair was gold and his skin was normal.

"Aaaaaaaahhhhh!" The woman screamed.

Slowly, a newborn came out and cried with his mother.

"What should we call him?" She was holding her child in her arms and breathing exhaustedly.

"How about Ard-" Suddenly light instantly flooded the room. I heard wood break and something fly past really quickly and sink into something soft.

"KILL THEM ALL!" A deep voice shouted and something hit the wall hard.

I woke up in a cold sweat. Who was that man? Kykvendi was sleeping in a fetal position, snoring lightly. Everyone else was still asleep. Maybe I could sleep a bit more to get rid of this headache.

POV: Kykvendi and Reivi

I was no longer having nightmares. When I woke up, I felt mostly replenished, but everyone else was still asleep. Seicig was fidgeting in her bed. I got dressed in my new clothes, strapped my rifle and my sword to my back and sat against the door and entered my mind.

Now that we have some free time, I want you to tell me more about myself.

-Your nitroglycerin, sorbent and stabilizer mix is da bomb!-

I mean about me being a demon.

-Listen. Many people might think you're hot, but you're actually also cool.-

Stop speaking in riddles.

-you're so sweet when you threaten people. Your body must maintain thermal equilibrium between your insides and your skin. If you're in a trance or angry, your body heats up tremendously.-

I figured as much.

You can immolate yourself by making yourself sweat a lot and lighting it on fire, which is different from doing it magically, which makes you angrier the longer you use it.-

If you didn't control my demon form, who does?

-Perhaps an alter ego who took a darker turn than you.-

What about my Grief abilities?

-Well, you can feel things none of the twenty one natural senses of the human body can feel, even feel physical objects around you without sight, hearing or taste, but seeing as you are still weak, it only extends as far as one centimetre.-

Is there any other way to manipulate fire?

-If you had a gas sack to store your liquid methane rather than sweat it out, then you could exhale even more fire out of your mouth for longer. What if you made a sword out of the blood of your enemies?-

That would require gallons of blood for just a few miligrams of iron.

-depends on the species, but yeah. Also any other metal works as well. Imagine that, a steel sword forged from the blood of four hundred people, and temperd by their ashes-

I'm not a killer anymore, I gave that role up years ago.

I then felt a hand approach and nudge my shoulder, I opened my eyes and everone was surrounding me. I stood up and sat on the bed.

"There is something I have to tell all of you." Seicig looked at me and nodded. "I... was in control for a few seconds while in my demon form." Everyone nodded groggily, and Seicig looked disappointed.

"Let's just go eat breakfast, I'm fucking starving." I could not agree more with Varr.

We walked down to the restaurant part of the inn and ordered bread and beef for breakfast. When I walked over to the counter to pay, the owner smiled. "The mayor wishes to speak with you." I paid up and got back to shoveling food into my mouth. Whilst I was eating, Djarfr poked me with her fork for my attention. "Where'd you get all that money?"

"The last man that crossed me paid with more than just his life."

"Who gives you the right to kill whoever you feel like?" Djarfr looked at me angrily.

"I should ask you the same thing."

"Please, Djarfr." Seicig tried defusing the riled up Djarfr.

After we finished eating we got to our mounted animals, Milder strapped a large saddle to Daufi's fluffy back, Seicig was putting her books and journals into some saddlebags on her buffalo, Varr, Saethwyr and Djarfr on the other hand were riding a titan lizard for smooth mounted archery. I whistled loudly, and Ehiztari walked into the stable. He submitted himself to the dirt below him. Disgusting. he was not a tool, and I would not allow him to be for very long. I covered my face with leftover bandages and walked away from the beast. "I'll walk instead." And so, we left the town to go south.

All the roads held little to no canopy, letting in all the light. Roads with no canopy were paid to be protected by the patrol, hence the lack of bandits on them, good thing I was not going that way. The roads had miniature canals made out of pebbles on the edges and the road itself was made of gravel. "I know you probably don't think the same, but I'm going to travel on the unofficial roads. I killed a patrol before I met you and I'm sure you don't need to be attacked constantly by the government." I walked down a path branching from the original.

A few minutes in, and it was darker, messier and less maintained, and I could hear lots of people hiding, they were not even hard to see, they were just hiding behind trees. I heard a shrill and inmediatly threw a knife in the direction, I walked over and picked the harpy who tried to scare me. "Let go, filthy demon!"

"I'm looking for the way to the town down south, so tell me or you won't like what happens next."

"I'd rather die than tell you! SCREEE!" It alarmed the bandits, making them jump out in an impromptu ambush. I quickly pointed my rifle to the closest enemy and shot them in the shoulder. The next one I slammed my right stump into the left side of his head. The rest of the bandits stopped in their tracks.

"I'm sure you all have families to go home too. either leave them with no one to support them, or I'll strip the meat from your bones." They slowly backed away. I'm glad that worked.

"You are sick! Sick! Sick in the head!"

"Brown sugar spiced baked harpy sounds delicious, or I could just eat you raw. Directions seems like a good deal for your life, don't you think so?"

"Fine, fine!" I let it go and it jumped up and perched on my head, digging its talons into my hood and started to tell me the way, with the bandits too afraid to do anything but retreat back into the flora. After about a while of walking, I came upon a knight wearing a barbute and a cuirass with pauldrons and faulds, the rest being chainmail hanging from his armor, covering his gambeson leggings and his fur boots. He was a holy pilgrim. "Hello sir. I was wondering if you could help me with something. You see, I am looking for this person."

He held out a wanted poster of me. It was me, snarling, and covered in flames. The eyes were what surprised me the most. It had been only a few days and already the kingdoms were offering money for my head. I tried my best not to look scared in this critical moment.

"He looks constipated." It took a second for the knight to burst into laughter at my joke.

"My friend, you have a great sense of humour, but this is a matter of great importance. Have you seen him?"

"I think I saw him up at the town up north, maybe you can catch him before he leaves."

"Thank you, good sir. By the way, what is your name?"

...

"Reivi."

"How do you know the demon is north unless you saw him yourself?"

Shit...

"He was causing damage. That's why I left the town."

"Thank you. Now I must be on my way, Reivi. I cannot let this demon run wild like this. People will die unless I find out what he's doing."

-damn, you're good at avoiding people.-

I continued walking through the forest, hopefully that knight would be sent on a wild goose chase or at least further away from the group.

POV: thrall

I felt exhausted, battered. I looked down, the bodies of my fallen foes were now part of me. Was I still myself? I don't know, but The angels had to die. I was hobbling over the ruins of the elven outpost, I found a newspaper and read the title:

VEGGR DESTROYED BY GLUTTONY DEMON

Strange, I was the the one that demolished the impenetrable wall that was Veggr, not a measly demon. Wait, was I the demon? I absorbed the power of anything dead I ate, when did my mission to expunge the demons turn me into one? My heart, it's burning. No, my whole body is.

Oh no.

I was just a tool, wasn't I?

"Don't be foolish. You gained the powers of an angel. Angels are incapable of becoming demonic. You simply absorbed their mass to become more powerful."

"Perhaps i better send you north, to intercept someone familiar."

Who?

"The demon that killed you. Once you kill him, you will be free."

YES!
