Chapter 16 - Opposites... (wait for it...)

#Opposites... (wait for it...)

At the top of the stairs has a locked steel door, which was opened by a key that was dropped earlier on by one of the zombie guards. Behind the door was an irrationally large room, and kneeling in the room were two irrationally large people dressed in rags.

They were kneeling far enough apart that if they were to stretch out their arms, they would just barely NOT be able to touch each other (even while standing. They were twice as tall as "The Instructor" that I faced not too long ago, although they were of a less muscular build.

Shackles were attached to one of each of their arms, and a long chain joined those shackles to opposite ends of the room, so that they could not approach one another.

The one on the left was a buxom woman, a Giantess, with flaming red hair. She was hot in both the figurative and the literal sense. Figurative, as in she was a very sexually attractive female. Literal, as in she actually had flames running across her skin and hair that was bright enough to light the entire room, although, by some video game logic it refused to burn her clothes off (damn!).

The one on the right was a wiry man, a Giant, with icy blue hair. He was cool in both the figurative and the literal sense. Figurative, as in he was a very calm and handsome man. Literal, as in he actually had frost forming on his skin and in his hair, cold enough that we couldn't feel the heat coming from the flames of the Giantess.

Although they were facing us, they hung their heads low so that they were looking at the floor, almost as though they were sleeping.

From what the Faeire told us earlier, we had infered that we had to fight two bosses together and we had agreed that Voltanis and I would attempt to land a pre-emptive strike.

"[Snap Shot]!"

"[Ball Lightning]!"

At the same time that I fired my bolt at the Giant, Voltanis raised an arm and let loose a basketball-sized sphere of lightning at the Giantess.

The reacction was immediate. As soon as we fired our attacks the two bosses defended, not themselves, but each other.

Just before the lightning could hit the Giantess, a wall of frost (not actual ice, but more like a frozen mist) materialized and diffused it around her. And before my bolt could reach the Giant, a burst of flame hit the bolt (which, must be noted, was already on fire) and turned it to ash in an instant.

*So much for a pre-emptive strike...*

"[Charge]!!!" Splay Mark yelled. It was both a skill name and an order.

Propelled by his skill (not dissimilar to the [Body Slam] skill from a few chapters before), Splay Mark dashed towards the Giantess and spun his body, swingning his NaS a complete revolution to strike at her.

The Giantess raised her free arm (she was still kneeling down) to block the blow. If she weren't a boss-class monster, her arm would definitely have been cleaved in half, along with her body, by that blow. However, her arm steadfastly held its position after blocking the attack with a grunt, even as Splay Mark tried to press through.

"[Rescue]!"

Unnoticed by Splay Mark (that's starting to really get annoying to type, should I just call him SM?), the Giant had stood up and flung a man-sized chunk of ice that had materialized in his hand at him. It was a good thing Kenobi used his skill, which practically teleported him next to Splay Mark.

Kenobi raised his buckler to block the attack, but the force of the attack was too strong, and it blew both him and Splay Mark away.

"He's distracted, strike him now!"

Learning from my earlier mistake, I fired an arrow with my Sword-Bow instead of attacking with my Dragon's Breath as a projectile that's not already on fire would have a higher chance to survive an attack by the Giantess.

The arrow, however, was still stopped by a shield of ice that forned in front of his face, while a wall of frost identical to the one he used before cancelled out the small fireball Voltanis fired.

"You... used a fireball..."

"It seemed like a good idea."

"WATCH OUT ABOVE YOU!" Kenobi called.

"UWAAH!"

"[Lunge]!"

Voltanis leaped to the side and barely avoided a stream of fire that came from above us, while I leapt towards a space just above the Giantess's head.

*It seems that among the four of us, only Voltanis doesn't have a movement skill. Come to think of it, the fact that 3 out of 4 of us are capable of high speed motion is unnatural.*

"MEEEEEN!!!"

Although I used a Kendo Kiai, the attack did not resemble a Kendo strike at all. By extending my arms, I struck the forehead of the Giantess with the force from my [Lunge] skill.

The Sword-Bow skidded across the surface of her forehead, leaving nothing more than a thin line and clipping away a lock of hair.

SCREEECH!!

The Giantess let out an inhuman sound as she made her hair burst into flames. If it wasn't for my flame-resistant armor, I might have actually been in trouble. As it was, the attack already took out a large chunk of my HP.

"Freya, by your grace, [Heal]!"

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

I was enveloped by a soft glow and my HP was slowly recovered.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the Giant preparing to throw another chunk of ice towards me, but I didn't worry as I also saw Splay Mark moving.

"Oh no you don't!" he swung his NaS and hit the ice with the flat of his weapon, sending it flying back at the Giant.

The Giantess shot a stream of fire towards the ice, but was only able to reduce its size before it crashed into the Giant's head, stunning him.

Getting back up, I quickly moved to the Giantess's right side, so that she was in between me and the Giant. The reason for this is so that I could avoid a counter attack by the Giant.

"(Fake) Double Shot!"

I fired as many shots as I could at the Giantess's armpit, and managed to land 4 arrows.

She tried to turn towards me, but realizing that she'd be entangling herself in the chain, she instead swung her right leg and let loose a wave of fire.

The short moment she lost when she tried to turn gave me enough time to duck (Matrix style) and avoid the brunt of the attack and fire one more shot before I hit the ground.

Before she could put her foot back onto the ground, Kenobi took advantage of the opening and leapt into action.

If you've seen Jedis fighting then you should be able to imagine Kenobi's movements. All that spinning and jumping and lightsaber twirling, combined with the flames from the Giantess, made for a really epic rave. It seems that a multitude of small attacks would work better than singular strong attacks.

But getting too close to her is not a good idea. With less effort than it takes to say "Flame On", the Giantess wreathed herself in flames and forced Kenobi to back off.

Meanwhile, the Giant has been trying to imprison Splay Mark within walls of ice. Despite all his efforts, the walls kept freezing over before Splay Mark could fully destroy it.

"Voltanis!" I called as I quickly got to his side, "Use Ball Lightning on the guy Giant!"

"Alright! [Ball Lightning]!

The Giant turned his attention to us and once again formed a wall of frost to diffuse the spell. And once again, the electrical charge diffused harmlessly around to wall.

But unbeknownst to the Giant, I had hidden something withing the spell:

A single flaming bolt.

Even though the frost extinguished the flames, the bolt continued to fly forward and hit the Giant square in the face.

Finally breaking free, Splay Mark swung his NaS at full force at the Giant's leg and causing him to trip and fall. The chain prevented him from catching himself as he fell face first onto the stone floor.

"He's down! Get him!" (Splay Mark)

Voltanis looked towards the Giantess.

"I'll hold back the fire girl!" said Voltanis, "Freyr! Lend me thy steed! [Blóðughófi]!"

Just as he finished casting the summon, the Giantess fired yet another stream of fire at Voltanis.

"[Resc-" Kenobi was about to use his skill, but I stopped him.

"Wait! His HP isn't decreasing!"

When the flamethrower finally ended, Voltanis was revealed to be completely unscathed by the fire. He was sitting on a horse with white fur (skin?) and crimson hooves and mane and tail, the exact same color as the Giantess's hair.

Voltanis let it sink in for a moment before saying:

"... Well, what are you waiting for? I can't hold this summon very long! Finish it quickly!"

"You heard him!" I shouted, "[Shower]!"

My skill marked the begining of what could be best described in the following picture:

Everytime the Giant tried to get back up, Splay Mark would smite him back down, and any shield he tried to project couldn't stand up to our onslaught. Meanwhile, Voltanis and his (correction, Freyr's) horse would intercept any attempt by the Giantess at shooting at us, even if the attack came from overhead.

Slowly but surely, the Giant's HP was dropping to dangerous levels.

But just before we could land the killing blow...
