Chapter 108: Cutting off its Strings

‘Fuck, it’s poison is almost at the level of the third ring,’

Zyrus activated his eyes of annihilation to see its weak spots, and sure enough, they were changed.

[Arcane Lance]

[Spear Aura]

Nealy a hundred spears were stabbed at the flying dragon’s underbelly.

-250,-250,-250….

*ROOOAR*

Not a single one missed the mark. At the moment when it least expected, its hp was reduced to less than 50% just like that.

-2000

As a result though, Zyrus was forced to take a full-on attack. All of the scales on his chest were blasted off. Lorica Squamata also had its durability reduced to less than 40.

He unequipped his armor and ran while drinking a potion. Naturally, the angered dragon wouldn’t allow that.

It clawed in his direction and all Zyrus could see were five streaks of green light flying in his way.

-500

‘I need a movement skill next,’

He blasted off another round of spears while cursing at the flying dragon. His hp which had just recovered was reduced once again. The same was true for his MP and stamina which fell to double digits.

At least for a short while, he'd have to survive with 1500 hp and recover his MP and stamina.

‘Well, it’s still more than enough,’

Zyrus was confident in his chances of survival. As long as they were in the sanctuary, the dragon would have to follow its rules.

It won’t be able to use the same move in a short while. Most field bosses have 2-3 different skill-type attacks in each phase. Apart from them, they could only use the basic attack to fight against the players.

Thus, a game of cat and mouse began once more. Zyrus attacked without holding back his mana and avoided all of its attacks.

His stats weren’t to be looked down on the second ring. No creature on this ocean had the power to kill him using just the basic attacks.

‘The moment it releases its third attack, it’ll be over,’

Zyrus relaxed despite the dire situation. 13 curses of void were a cheat-like ability that could deal with all opponents.

*Crash*

“Heh, is that all you have?”

*Grrrrr*

‘C’mon, just use the skill already,’

There were many strategy guides surrounding strong monsters. The three phases of boss monsters could be summarized this way: First, stat check. It was a phase where the monster would use its normal attacks with one skill at random. Any group of similar-level players could deal with it. And if you have any trouble in this part then just pack up and leave.

Second, recovery and preservation. The monster would become stronger and it’ll use skills more often. It is the time when the players have to save their long cd skills while surviving and dealing sufficient damage. The key here is teamwork. As long as you’re prepared for the special skills of the monster such as poison, petrification, an aoe attack and so on, a group of elite players can deal with it.

Third and the last phase, Eruption. This was the most difficult part and the phase where most of the players were wiped out. No amount of tricks worked in this phase. Attacks, defense, buffs, debuffs, all of them would erupt without holding back. It’s a do-or-die round where the side with more explosive power wins. Half of the strategies are also regarding this stage where different combinations of class and skills were tested by the leaders.

Only after doing all these would they send their true main force. Zyrus’s advantage could be imagined as someone who didn’t have to go through all that.

And as far as this fight was concerned, he was never worried about the first and the third phase.

*ROOOAR*

[Arcane Lance]

[Spear Aura]

[Earth movement]

Zyrus didn’t bother with the dragon’s attack and dived underground. His aim was to set up a rhythm from the start, and then break it to pieces. It was a simple yet effective way to catch the enemies off guard.

-250,-250,-250,-250,…..

And as always, it worked.

Sizzling poison seeped into his body even as he traveled underground. He didn’t dare to imagine the fate of someone who took it head-on.

‘Just this attack is enough to wipe out a party,’

Zyrus stuck out his head from the ground and launched another volley of arcane lances. It was like a game of whack-a-mole where he attacked while avoiding the dragon’s claws and tail.

*ROOAR*

-500

‘Haa…finally it’s done,’

Zyrus grinned even though he'd just lost another 500 hp after being struck by the dragon’s tail. Why? Because with this dogfight, he had finally pushed it into the third phase.

Others might be scared for their lives when they saw a green dragon that was going berserk, but not him.

Now was the time to obtain his second trait.

[Curse of Uncertainty: Void Quandary]

Zyrus used half of his power to attack the dragon’s weakness. The way the 13 Curses of Void worked was different from his activation on earth. It was similar to activating a command in the game. The energy bar would empty out once you use the skill.

The entire process of mental calculation and most of the charge-up time were removed. Of course, the effects were weaker due to that, but that was in his favor since they could work within the sanctuary’s rules.

*ROOOAR*

“Oh, you noticed it huh. It’s too late though,”

[Curse of Collapse: Spatial Stab]

Zyrus pointed his finger at the empty spot above the dragon’s head.

*Crrrack*

A tiny black dot appeared on the spot. It ignored the layers of mana barriers, it ignored the obstruction of the laws of life, it ignored the very concept of blocking and defense.

How can you block an attack without determining its direction? It was a paradox with no answer.

The dragon was flustered at the sudden attack, but it didn’t have the time to deal with it. The curse of uncertainty bypassed the layers of defenses and left behind a path.

It was a tiny region smaller than a grain of sand, but it was enough for Zyrus. The moment he pointed his finger, all of his remaining power was concentrated on that space.

*Shatter*

The space, mana, and even the laws of life collapsed into that region. And the mighty dragon died in such an absurd manner.

“So that was it. He wouldn’t have died even if I ground it to pieces,”

Zyrus realized as he slumped forward. The revived dragon didn’t need something like a heart, brain, or even soul to survive. Its physical appearance was just like a puppet.

And the only way to stop that puppet was by cutting off its strings.

‘Unless one can use the power of laws to cut through the laws of life, there’s no way to kill it,’

Now that he knew about the monsters' weakness, he was much less worried about it. Although it was a calamity-grade existence for those on a similar level, it wasn’t that useful in the grand scheme of things. At least, he didn’t believe that someone could conquer planets with an army of monsters like these.

He had initially thought that he would need the power of laws to attack and defend, but that wasn’t the case. As such, even if you can’t kill creatures like these, there was a way to deal with it.

‘Banish them into outer space, seal them under formations, hack, you can even capture them for experiments…’

Zyrus was sure that there were monsters like these that he didn’t knew of, and others must have used similar methods to deal with them.

‘Maybe it’s related to the mission that Matope talked about…’

He put aside his random thoughts as he reached the dragon’s corpse. It took a lot of luck and coincidences to work out, but he got what he wanted at last.

[Blood Fusion]

A red light flashed past his eyes, and a bloody mist erupted from the fallen dragon. Zyrus felt like he was standing on a river of blood as his perception escaped his body.

[You have met the necessary requirements to activate the talent]

[You can obtain one of the #######’s special traits]

[Obtained traits: 1/10]

Note: This ability can be used once every 20 levels.

Note: The traits will be granted at random and they will be modified to suit your race.

Note: The obtained traits can be developed further with racial evolution.

Emerald-white specks of light seeped out from the dragon’s corpse. They swirled and weaved while transforming into a distinct shape.

Zyrus had a solemn look as he observed the snarling dragon which was taking form. It was the Source of Existence of the Nidhogg king, the field boss of this lair.

It wasn’t the first time he was dealing with a field boss’s source of existence. But unlike with Tauranox and Camazotz, he was currently in a soul form just like the Nidhogg king. It would be difficult to deal with the empowered soul.

‘Regardless, the outcome is fixed from the moment I activated the talent,’

A talent created from Nidraxis’s blood wasn’t a joke. And as if to prove his thoughts, a harrowing change took place on the dragon’s corpse.

Its gigantic body withered at a visible rate as bright red chains popped out from within.

The dragon's soul howled as all of the bloody chains pierced various parts of its body. Even Zyrus, a bystander, felt a chill down his spine.

‘Using your enemies’ blood as a medium to devour their souls...’

Unlike the time when he used the skill on the burrow rat king, Zyrus was more knowledgeable about the laws. He sensed it at this time that the blood-red chains were in fact the manifestation of the laws of blood.

‘Looks like I still have a long way to go,’

The activation was different compared to before as he was already bleeding when he activated the talent. As such, he had no time to observe the hair-like platinum threads that covered the entirety of the sanctuary.
