Chapter 17: Foolish Catastrophy

Chapter 17: Foolish Catastrophy

After the battle we looked for Duke Lothairs corpse while also accounting our damages. A total of 400 Heavy infantry units died with 400 injured, 2545 light infantry units have also perished with 2000 injured and out of 100 cavalry units that I had only 30 survived including Anselm.

Wilhelms troops only suffered a total of 500 deaths and 100 injured. It was clear victory for us but with our remaining troops continuing to do battle is not possible. So on Henry V sent a group of delegation to send a letter of surrender to Duke Lothair immediately.

After the battle the emperor also inquired to me about my “inventions” and asked for the technology which I gave reluctantly. While dealing with the aftermath a messenger suddenly arrived.

Messenger: My emperor a band of demons and devilish creatures had arrived into the coast of the County of Portugal. Because of the sudden invasion of the western Iberia by the said demons the Islamic Kingdom of Almohad and the various Christian Kingdoms in Iberia had formed a temporary truce and alliance to fight back against the said demons. However even with the combined forces of the Christian and Muslim kingdoms they are gradually getting pushed back and as a result they have asked various rulers to send aid immediately!

When the court heard the message they all just laughed and tried to dismiss it as a joke, even I don’t believe it. But even so the emperor still verified the information…

Henry: Demons? Are you sure? Or the kingdoms in Iberia are just trying to trick us? You know that lying to me will result to your head right?!

When the Messenger heard those words he suddenly cried and begged he also said that…

Messenger: My emperor I have not lied to you and if you want any more valid information then you can just look at the French! They had already dispatched their available troops to provide assistance!

When we all heard it the court suddenly came to silence. Even the French have mobilized? We suddenly came to the realization that maybe this message about demons and devils are true. It is during that period of silence when suddenly a messenger from the Papacy had arrived, he looked extremely exhausted and that his current appearance doesn’t resemble any proper messenger of the pope.

Papal Messenger: Greetings Emperor Henry V

Henry V:  Spare me the formalities. Why have you come here?

Papal Messenger: Have you received the latest news already?

Henry: Is this all about that demons and devils invading from the western coast of Iberia?

Papal Messenger: Its exactly that you majesty, and because of that the Pope has sent me to stop fighting for awhile to assist our brethren in Iberia.

Henry V: Ho? Is the church not disgusted about fighting demons with the “Infidels”?

Papal Messenger: The pope has said that even though it irks him so much, he must endure fighting with the Heretics to protect the safety of all human kind your highness.

Henry V: Hahahahaha! This is laughable the church is fighting with the Muslims? Didn’t the church sanctioned a crusade against the Muslims some years ago? And now he wants to fight with them “for the sake of humanity”? what a joke! With my knowledge of you church people I’m sure that your just trying to stab them in the back when the time comes. It’s the same with those heretics! They’re just waiting for the right time to stab us in the back and your expecting me to help with that fragile alliance?!

Papal Messenger: Your highness is this your response? You wont help humanity because of your anger against the church?

Henry V: Interpret it as you will  the only thing that I can say is I wont send troops. But I may send some resources “For the sake of humanities survival” does that answer suffice?

Papal Messenger: Then your highness I shall now leave with your response. I hope that God may bless you.

Henry V: Hmph! Leave already!

After that conference with the papal messenger the court was in uproar again. Some nobles are trying to tell the emperor that he had done the right decision. Some tried to persuade him to send troops in Iberia to avoid gods ire. While some simply adopted the sit and wait strategy.

For me I honestly wanted to confirm the validity of information. First is because I don’t know what “Demons and Devils” they are talking about. Maybe they’re just tribal foreigners from the other side of the sea or whatnot. And second its because of the very event itself… Why did the Iberian Kingdoms and the Caliphate formed an alliance immediately? It is not realistic enough for them to form an alliance this time because of the recent crusade.

Aren’t the Muslims angry at us Christians because we took Jerusalem from them? Are they not suspicious enough to the point that they should not trust our every word. Most of all Aren’t the Kings and Queens of Iberia zealous enough to even propose an alliance with the Muslims?

Sigh… This is getting confusing! Where in the world did those devils came from anyway? In the first place are they even devils?! While I was in thought the emperor suddenly called for me…

Henry V: Silence! Before we tackle about that matter any further we must first give rewards to those persons who have contributed on the war. First I must reward Wilhelm for leading the auxiliary army leading to the enemies crushing defeat and for that I will reward him a small land in my demesne and give him a position as one of my military adviser.

Wilhelm: I thank you for your compassion and mercy your majesty and swear to you on my honor and blood that I will serve you loyally for the rest of my life or until you deemed me not worthy anymore.

Henry V: Very well. Then I must now reward the person who had contributed most during the battle. He is the commander of the main army the one who proposed the strategies that led to the enemies collapse and the person the person that made victory possible, Count Alberto of Habsburg. To reward him I will accede to his previous request and additionally grant him one favor from me that I will try to achieve at the best of my ability.

When I heard those lines from the Emperor I was shocked because this is not how the medieval court supposed to work but I just didn’t mind it anymore and strode forwards to receive my reward. I did the formalities required with the best of my abilities. While the ceremony was ongoing some noble looked at me with envious eyes. Some looked with appreciation and some looked with disdain. To hell with them! I deserve this!

After giving me my reward the ceremony continued on until every man who need to be rewarded was rewarded. After the ceremony the emperor continued to talk about the matter about the demonic invasion.

During the talks however the fools have given me pretty hard time which resulted to me being doomed.
