Book 4: Chapter 7

The junkyard loomed before them, a sprawling labyrinth of rusted metal and forgotten dreams. Moonlight glinted off jagged edges of discarded machinery, casting eerie shadows that seemed to writhe and dance in the night air. Jessica's heightened senses tingle with anticipation as she crouches behind the skeletal remains of an old Chevrolet, her muscles coiled tight like springs ready to unleash.

Beside her, Nikki's eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, her breath coming in short, controlled bursts. The air crackled with tension, thick enough to cut with a knife. Jessica could smell the fear radiating off her friend, mingling with the acrid scent of rusted metal and stagnant oil.

A whisper of movement caught Jessica's attention, and she turned to see Salina sliding into position next to them. The witch's face was a mask of determination, her fingers twitching with barely contained magical energy.

"The trap is set," Salina murmured, her voice barely audible over the ambient creaks and groans of settling metal. "Now we just have to lure that thing right into it."

Nikki beamed her eyes at her. “Are you sure you are a real witch?”

Salina glared at her until she smirked. “Trust me, when you see me fight, you will know.”

Jessica swallowed hard, trying to quell the rising tide of fear threatening to overwhelm her. "I just hope the trap will work," she whispered back, her voice hoarse with tension. "That thing is strong.”

Nikki's hand found Jessica's in the darkness, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "That's why we have to work together," she said, her voice low and filled with a steely resolve that belied her young age. "Our powers combined will be enough to stop it."

As if summoned by their whispered conversation, a rumbling growl echoed across the junkyard, sending shivers down Jessica's spine. Her hackles rose instinctively as a familiar scent assaulted her nostrils–the sharp, metallic stench of the creature they hunted. It was a smell that haunted her dreams, a nauseating cocktail of rotting fish and ozone.

"It's coming," Jessica hissed, her body trembling with a potent mixture of fear and adrenaline.

The three girls tensed, their bodies coiled like springs ready to unleash. Seconds stretched into an eternity as they waited, every sense straining for the slightest hint of movement. Then, without warning, the ground beneath them trembled.

From the inky blackness between two towering piles of scrap, a monstrous form emerged. The cyborg fish creature's glowing yellow eyes swept across the junkyard, casting golden reflections off the surrounding metal. Its massive body, a horrific fusion of scales and circuitry, moved with an unnatural fluidity that made Jessica's stomach churn.

There was no time for second thoughts. With a shared glance of determination, Jessica and Nikki exploded from their hiding place. As they sailed through the air, their bodies shimmered and twisted, fur erupting from their skin as they transformed into their werewolf shapes.

The creature let out a deafening roar that shook the very foundations of the junkyard as the two wolves slammed into it. Jessica's razor-sharp claws tore into the monster's flank, ripping through scales and wires alike. The acrid stench of burned rubber and ozone filled her nostrils as she buried her fangs into what passed for the creature's shoulder.

Nikki's sleek white form darted in and out of the fray, her jaws clamping down on the creature's limbs with bone-crushing force. Together, they were a whirlwind of fur and fangs, their movements a deadly ballet as they fought to bring the monster down.

But despite their ferocious assault, the creature remained standing. Its unnatural strength and resilience proved a formidable challenge, even for two enraged werewolves. For every wound they inflicted, the monster's cybernetic parts whirred and sparked, seeming to repair themselves before their very eyes.

From the sidelines, Salina watched the battle unfold, her fingers moving in intricate patterns as she muttered an incantation under her breath. The surrounding air crackled with witch energy, building to a crescendo that made Jessica's fur stand on end.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Suddenly, a blast of pure magical force erupted from Salina's hands, slamming into the creature's side with the force of a freight train. The fish monster roared in agony, its attention momentarily diverted from the werewolves as it struggled to process this new threat.

Jessica seized the opportunity, using the creature's momentary distraction to leap onto its back. Her powerful jaws clamped down on the exposed wiring and circuitry at the base of its neck, sending sparks flying. The taste of ozone and motor oil filled her mouth, nearly making her gag, but she held on with grim determination.

The monster bucked and twisted beneath her, its slimy body grinding and screeching as it fought to dislodge her. Jessica's claws dug deep, anchoring her in place as she tore at the creature's vulnerable components.

Nikki, seeing her chance, lunged forward with lightning speed. Her jaws found purchase around the creature's throat, clamping down with all the strength she could muster. The fish monster's struggles grew weaker as the two werewolves pressed their advantage, their relentless attacks slowly but surely wearing it down.

For a moment, victory seemed within their grasp. But then, with a suddenness that took them all by surprise, the creature's tail whipped around like a steel cable. It caught Nikki square in the chest; the impact lifting her off her feet and sending her flying.

"Nikki!" Jessica's anguished cry tore from her throat as she watched her friend slam into a pile of rusted car parts with bone-crushing force. Nikki's wolf form shimmered and faded, leaving her human body lying motionless amidst the debris.

In that split second of distraction, the creature struck. Its massive jaws clamped around Jessica's midsection, lifting her into the air as if she weighed like a rag doll. Pain exploded through her body as the monster's teeth pierced her flesh, drawing a howl of agony from her lupine throat.

Jessica thrashed and snarled, her claws raking uselessly against the creature's armored hide. She could feel the pressure building, her bones creaking under the strain of the monster's inexorable grip. Black spots danced at the edges of her vision, crushing her life away.

Just when she believed all hope had vanished, a dazzling burst of light exploded nearby, so intense that it burned into her retinas, even with her eyelids tightly shut. The creature's roar of pain reverberated through Jessica's body as its jaws suddenly loosened, dropping her unceremoniously to the ground.

Gasping for breath, Jessica forced her eyes open, blinking away the afterimages that danced across her vision. Through the haze of pain and disorientation, she saw Salina standing tall, her hands outstretched and her eyes blazing with otherworldly power.

Wave after wave of magical energy poured from the young witch, each blast searing the creature's flesh and shorting out its cybernetic components. The air crackled with ozone and the acrid stench of burning circuitry as Salina poured everything she had into her assault.

The fish monster thrashed and howled, its metallic body sparking and smoking under the relentless magical onslaught. Jessica watched in awe as Salina's spells wove a web of shimmering energy around the creature, slowly but surely immobilizing it.

Gritting her teeth against the pain that wracked her body, Jessica clambered to her feet. Her wolf form wavered, threatening to give way under the strain of her injuries, but she forced herself to focus. They were so close to victory–she couldn't give up now.

As she scanned the battlefield, her gaze fell upon the telltale glow of the compactor they'd rigged as a trap. If they could just lure the creature into it, they might have a chance of ending this once and for all.

"Salina!" Jessica called out, her voice rough and gravelly from the abuse her throat had taken. "Keep it distracted! I've got an idea!"

The young witch nodded, her face a mask of concentration as she redoubled her efforts. Sweat poured down her brow, her hands trembling with the effort of maintaining such a powerful barrage of spells, but she didn't falter.

Jessica took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. With a surge of will, she forced her battered body back into its wolf shape, ignoring the screaming protest of her injuries. She had to end this–for Nikki, for Salina, for all of them.

The surrounding junkyard suddenly blazed with light as the power came back online. Jessica silently thanked Tiffany and the others for coming through. With the trap now fully operational, all she had to do was lead the monster right into it.

Summoning every ounce of strength she had left, Jessica darted forward. She weaved in and out of the creature's reach, her movements a blur as she nipped at its flanks and darted away before it could retaliate. Each motion sent waves of agony through her body, but she pushed through the pain, focusing on the task at hand.

The fish monster snapped and swiped at her, its movements growing increasingly erratic as Salina's spells continued to batter it. Jessica could see the toll the battle was taking on the creature–its once-fluid motions now jerky and uncoordinated, its glowing red eyes flickering like dying embers.

Just a little further, Jessica thought, her heart pounding as she led the monster closer and closer to the trap. Victory was within their grasp; she could almost taste it.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans.

Just as Jessica was about to make her final push towards the compactor, the creature's gaze suddenly locked onto Salina. In that moment, Jessica saw a flicker of cruel intelligence in those glowing red eyes–a realization that the young witch was the genuine threat.

With a guttural roar that shook the very ground beneath their feet, the fish monster charged towards Salina. The witch's eyes widened in alarm as she realized the danger she was in. Her hands wove intricate patterns in the air as she hastily chanted another spell, but Jessica could see the exhaustion etched in every line of her face.

"Salina!" Jessica howled, her wolf form surging forward to intercept the creature. But even as she pushed her battered body to its limits, she knew with a sinking feeling that she might not make it in time.

Time seemed to slow to a crawl as Jessica watched the scene unfold before her. Salina, her face a mask of determination even in the face of certain doom. The monster, its massive form bearing down on the young witch with terrifying speed. And Jessica herself, her paws pounding against the earth as she raced to save her friend.

In that moment, with the fate of her friends–and perhaps the entire world–hanging in the balance, Jessica made a silent vow. No matter what happened next, no matter the cost, she would not let this monster win. With a last burst of speed, she hurled herself towards Salina, praying that somehow, against all odds, it would be enough…
