Book 2: Chapter 8

Jessica's heart pounded in her chest as she crept along the shadowy corridor of Castle Dregan's upper floor. Every nerve in her body tingled with heightened awareness, her werewolf senses on high alert for any sign of the vampire's approach. The ancient stone walls seemed to close in around her, their icy surface a stark reminder of the danger that lurked within this fortress.

Beside her, Salina moved with careful precision, her eyes darting from side to side as they searched for a hidden escape route. The tension between them was palpable, a shared understanding that their very lives hung in the balance.

A flicker of movement caught Jessica's eye. She whirled, muscles tensing, ready to face their pursuer. But it was only a tapestry stirring in a draft, its faded threads depicting some long-forgotten battle. She exhaled slowly, willing her racing pulse to calm.

"Jessica," Salina whispered, her voice barely audible. "Over here."

Jessica turned to see Salina gesturing toward a window at the far end of the corridor. Hope surged within her as they approached, noticing the broken lock that hung uselessly from its frame.Salina's fingers trembled slightly as she eased the window open, wincing at the faint creak of rusted hinges. A gust of cool night air rushed in, carrying with it the scent of pine and damp earth. Jessica leaned forward, peering down at the dizzying drop below.

"We’re high," she murmured, her enhanced vision picking out details in the gloom. "But there's forest cover. We might be able to make it."

The sound of footsteps echoed from somewhere in the castle's depths, sending a chill down Jessica's spine. Her ears twitched, picking up the faintest whisper of movement. Time was running out.

"Salina," Jessica said, her voice low and urgent. "Get Kevin and Tiffany. Get them through this window and into the forest. Set up the trap we discussed–I'll know where to find it."

Salina's eyes widened. "What about you?"

"I'll draw him out," Jessica replied, her jaw set with determination. "Buy you some time."

For a moment, Salina hesitated, conflict clear in her expression. Then she nodded, squeezing Jessica's arm. "Be careful," she whispered. "Good luck."

With a last glance of understanding between them, Salina slipped away, moving swiftly and silently to gather the others. Jessica watched her go, a knot of fear and resolve tightening in her chest. She was alone now, facing a predator that had stalked the night for centuries.

Jessica took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She needed to get Dregan's attention, to lead him on a deadly chase through the forest. Her mind raced, considering and discarding options. A direct confrontation was too risky–she needed to be clever, to use the vampire's arrogance against him.

She moved deeper into the castle, her footsteps deliberately heavier now. Let him hear her, let him think she was panicking. Jessica's senses remained on high alert, tracking the subtle shifts in air currents, the faint echoes that betrayed movement elsewhere in the building.

The ancient stone walls seemed to close in around her, amplifying every creak of the floorboards beneath her feet. She paused at a corner, straining her enhanced senses for any sign of the vampire's approach.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are," Dregan's voice echoed from somewhere in the darkness, a sinister singsong that sent chills down Jessica's spine. "I can smell your fear, little wolf. It's intoxicating."

Jessica gritted her teeth, forcing down the panic threatening to overwhelm her. She had to stay focused. The plan depended on her leading Dregan to the right spot outside.

She raced back to the unlocked window in the corridor, a faint breeze tickled her cheek. As if on cue, the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps told her Dregan had taken the bait.

"There you are!" Dregan's triumphant snarl came down the corridor as Jessica

fumbled with the latch, making a show of panicked desperation.

Just as Dregan's icy fingers brushed the back of her neck, Jessica wrenched the window open and dove through. She hit the ground outside in a rolling tumble, wincing as tiny sharp rocks dug into her feet.

"Impressive," Dregan's voice drifted down from above. "But do you really think you can outrun me outside?”

Jessica scrambled to her feet, backing towards the treeline. "Maybe not," she called back, injecting as much bravado into her voice as she could muster. "But I bet I can outsmart you, old man."

With that, she turned and plunged into the forest. The darkness enveloped her, but Jessica's heightened senses guided her through the tangle of branches and roots. Behind her, she heard Dregan's frustrated growl, followed by the sound of him landing on the ground.

"Run all you like, little wolf," the vampire called, his voice carrying easily through the night air. "It will only make the chase more exhilarating when I catch you."

Jessica didn't waste breath responding. She focused on leading Dregan along the path she and her friends had planned, careful not to move too fast. She needed to keep the vampire's attention fully on her, to make sure he didn't notice the trap until it was too late.

The forest gave way to a moonlit clearing, revealing a pentagram painted in blood. Jessica's heart leapt. This was it. She skidded to a halt in the center, turning to face her pursuer. Her shadow concealed the trap as if it were a dark blanket.

Dregan emerged from the shadows, his pale skin seeming to glow in the silvery light. A predatory smile curved his lips as he stalked towards her. "Nowhere left to run, my dear," he purred. "Have you finally accepted your fate?"

Jessica backed up slowly, careful to keep her movements natural. "Not quite," she replied, forcing a tremor into her voice. "Maybe I'm just tired of running."

Dregan's eyes gleamed with triumph as he stepped forward. "Wise choice. I promise to make it qui-"

The vampire's words cut off abruptly as his foot crossed the concealed pentagram. The surrounding air shimmered, and suddenly Dregan found himself unable to move.

"What?" he snarled, struggling against unseen bonds. "What is this trickery?"

From the edge of the clearing, Salina's voice rang out. "It worked! We got him!"

Kevin, Tiffany, and Salina burst from their hiding spots, faces flushed with a mix of fear and exhilaration. Jessica sagged with relief, the tension draining from her body.

"Nice job, Sabrina," Tiffany quipped, nudging Salina with her elbow. "Looks like your witchcraft beats his."

Kevin checked his watch, his face pale in the moonlight. "Okay, we just need to keep him contained until sunrise. That's... ten minutes.”

Jessica allowed herself a small smile. They'd done it. They'd actually trapped the centuries-old vampire. Maybe they would survive this nightmare after all.

But Dregan's laughter, low and cruel, wiped the smile from her face.

"Oh, you clever children," he said, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement. "Did you really think it would be that easy?"

Before any of them could react, Dregan chanted in a language Jessica didn't recognize. The surrounding air pulsed with an eerie red light, and the shimmering barrier of Salina's trap wavered.

"No!" Salina cried, fumbling in her pockets for something–salt, herbs, anything to reinforce the spell. But it was too late.

With a sound like shattering glass, the magical trap broke. Dregan stepped forward, flexing his fingers as if testing their movement.

"A valiant effort," he said, his voice dripping with condescension. "But I'm afraid you're dealing with forces far beyond your comprehension."

Jessica's mind raced, searching desperately for a new plan. They were out of options, out of tricks. As Dregan advanced on them, fangs bared in a vicious grin, Jessica steeled herself for a final, hopeless stand.

And then, like an answer to a prayer she hadn't dared to make, a new sound cut through the night–the wail of a boat police siren, growing steadily closer.

Dregan's head snapped towards the sound, a hiss escaping his lips. "Meddlesome humans," he snarled. "Always interfering where they don't belong."

For a moment, hope surged in Jessica's chest. Maybe with the police here, they stood a chance. Maybe-

Dregan advanced with supernatural swiftness, interrupting Jessica’s thoughts. One moment he was yards away, the next his iron grip closed around Jessica's arm.

"I'm afraid our little game must end," the vampire said, his eyes blazing with fury. "But I'm not leaving empty-handed."

Jessica's friends screamed her name as Dregan launched himself into the air, dragging her with him. The ground fell away at a dizzying rate; the wind whipping Jessica's hair into her face as they soared over the treetops.

"Let me go!" she yelled, struggling against Dregan's grip. But it was like fighting a steel vise.

"Oh, I don't think so," Dregan replied, his voice somehow carrying over the rush of wind. "You've proven far too entertaining to simply discard."

They reached the castle in a matter of seconds, Dregan touching down on the highest tower with impossible grace. He tossed Jessica onto the roof like a rag doll, her body skidding painfully across the weathered shingles.

As Jessica struggled to her feet, ribs aching from the impact, Dregan loomed over her. In the pale moonlight, with the vast expanse of his domain spread out below them, the vampire looked every inch the monster from a nightmare.

"I must admit, you and your little friends have impressed me," Dregan said, his tone almost conversational. "It's been centuries since anyone has given me such... spirited opposition."

Jessica backed away, her eyes darting around for any escape route. But there was nowhere to go–nothing but a sheer drop on all sides.

Dregan continued, seemingly oblivious to her desperation. "But I'm afraid playtime is over. I have a schedule to keep, after all."

"What are you talking about?" Jessica demanded, buying time as she inched towards the edge of the roof. Maybe if she could just get a little closer...

Dregan's smile was all teeth, sharp and predatory. "Why, the expansion of my empire, of course. Your charming little town will make an excellent start. By this time tomorrow night, every man, woman, and child will be turned. My own personal army of the undead."

Horror washed over Jessica as the implications sank in. Her family, her friends, everyone she knew and loved–all transformed into monsters like Dregan.

"No," she growled, feeling the familiar surge of the beast within her. "I won't let you."

Dregan laughed, the sound echoing across the rooftop. "And how do you propose to stop me, little wolf? You've played all your cards, sprung all your traps. What's left?"

Jessica straightened, meeting Dregan's gaze with steely determination. "This," she snarled.

She stopped fighting the change, letting the wolf surge to the surface. But this time, she didn't let it take over completely. Instead, she channeled the transformation, shaping it to her will.

Bones cracked and reformed, muscles bulged and stretched. But when it was done, Jessica stood not as a full wolf, but as something in between–a towering, white-furred humanoid form that combined the best of both her natures.

Dregan laughed. “Oh- this will be so much better!”

Jessica flexed her clawed hands, reveling in the raw power coursing through her new form. "You have no idea," she growled, her voice a low rumble in her chest.

For a moment, they stood frozen, sizing each other up. The ancient vampire, with centuries of dark power at his command. The transformed werewolf, fueled by desperation and the primal strength of her inner beast.

Then, as if by some unspoken signal, they lunged at each other. The final battle was about to begin, with the fate of Jessica's entire town hanging in the balance.
