The late afternoon sun streamed through the canopy of towering oaks, casting a warm glow over the forest floor where Jessica Trumblelee stood, muscles straining as she lifted a hefty rock above her head. With a sharp exhale, she hurled the stone at a nearby tree trunk, watching as it splintered the bark on impact.
Jessica wiped the sweat from her brow, surveying the small clearing she had claimed as her own for these rigorous training sessions. Ever since that fateful night at Dregan Castle eight months ago, she'd poured countless hours into honing her werewolf abilities - the heightened senses, the raw strength, the instinctive need to protect her loved ones and town.
That night, two lives were lost, two souls forever wrenched from her by the fangs of a starving vampire, their screams still echoing in her memory. She couldn't let that happen again. Not on her watch.
"Jessica! There you are!"
The sound of Kevin Lebowski's voice snapped Jessica out of her dark reverie. She turned to see her best friend hurrying towards her; Salina Carpenter close behind.
"We've been looking all over for you," Salina said, her usual dry sarcasm tinged with genuine concern. "You know, it's summer now. Time to take a break from the whole 'lone wolf' routine."
Jessica cracked a weary smile. "Can't exactly take a break when there's supernatural evil lurking around every corner."
"That's exactly why you need a break!" Kevin said, throwing an arm around Jessica's shoulders. "It's been eight months since... since everything happened. Don't you think you've earned some time off?"
Jessica sighed, the tension in her muscles easing ever so slightly at her friends' presence. "I guess you have a point. Maybe a little vacation would do me some good."
"That's the spirit!" Salina grinned, bumping Jessica's hip playfully. "And lucky for you, we've got the perfect getaway in mind."
Jessica arched a brow. "Oh?"
"My parents won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bahamas," Kevin explained, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "They said we can all come - you, me, and Salina."
Jessica felt the familiar twinge of worry in the pit of her stomach. "I don't know, you guys. What if something happens while I'm gone? I can't just leave Moon Valley unprotected."
"C'mon, Jessica," Salina said, her tone uncharacteristically gentle. "Your dad's the sheriff. He's more than capable of handling things while we're away. And let's be honest - when was the last time the three of us actually got to be, you know, normal teenagers?"
Jessica had to admit, the idea of a carefree tropical getaway was tempting. No monsters to hunt, no innocents to save - just sun, sand, and the company of her closest friends. And her dad was more than capable of looking after Moon Valley in her absence. Maybe a week or two away was just what she needed to recharge.
"Alright, fine," she conceded, a reluctant smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "When do we leave?"
Kevin whooped with joy, pulling Jessica into a tight hug. "Yes! This is gonna be so much fun, you'll see. We're gonna have the best time, just the three of us."
Salina chuckled, shaking her head. "Careful, dork. You don't want the werewolf out of our resident werewolf cheerleader, do you?"
Jessica laughed, playfully shoving Kevin away. "Alright, alright, enough with the mushy stuff. When do we leave?"
"Dad said he booked the plane tickets for next Friday," Kevin replied, grinning from ear to ear. "He and Mom are so excited to get out of Moon Valley for a while, too. I think they need the break just as much as we do."
"Well, I better start packing then," Jessica said, already mentally drafting a list of everything she'd need. Sunscreen, swimsuits, a few light sundresses - and of course, a stash of meat strips, just in case.
As the trio made their way back towards town, Jessica couldn't help but steal one last glance over her shoulder at the forest. She couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was watching her, just out of sight. The memory of glowing crimson eyes flashed through her mind, and she shuddered involuntarily.

"You okay, Jessica?" Salina asked, brow furrowed in concern.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," Jessica lied, forcing a smile. "Just...ready for a vacation, that's all."
Salina didn't look entirely convinced, but she let the subject drop. Kevin, oblivious as ever, rambled on about all the activities they had planned - snorkeling, beach parties, maybe even a trip to a nearby island.
Jessica nodded along, trying to match his enthusiasm, but a part of her couldn't help but worry. Moon Valley had become a veritable battleground for supernatural forces, and she was its first and often only line of defense. Could she really afford to leave, even for a little while?
As they reached the outskirts of town, Jessica glimpsed the "Welcome to Moon Valley" sign, its cheerful lettering mocking her apprehension. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to push those concerns aside. For once, she was going to be a normal teenager, not a protector or a warrior. Just Jessica, Kevin, and Salina, enjoying a much-needed vacation.
"Alright, count me in," she said, squeezing Kevin's arm reassuringly. "Let's do this."

A week later, Jessica stood on the Trumblelee family's doorstep, her suitcase in hand as Mr. and Mrs. Lebowski's car pulled up the driveway. She could feel the weight of her father's worried gaze upon her as she bid him farewell.
"Are you sure about this, sweetie?" Sheriff Daniel Trumblelee asked, his brow furrowed with concern. "I know you've been practicing self-defense for a while since….. the incident at Castle Dregan. But the outside world is unpredictable.”
Jessica offered him a reassuring smile, doing her best to ignore the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. "I'll be fine, Dad. Kevin's parents will be with us, and Salina and I can handle ourselves. Besides, you've got things covered here, right?"
Her father nodded reluctantly. "Of course. But if anything - and I mean if anything happens, you call me immediately, you hear?"
"I hear you loud and clear," Jessica said, pulling him into a tight hug. "Don't worry, Dad. I'll be back before you know it, good as new."
As she released her father and turned to climb into the waiting car, Jessica couldn't shake the nagging feeling that she was forgetting something - or someone. Just as she was about to close the door, a flash of movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention.
She froze, her gaze drawn to the shadowy figure standing at the edge of the tree line, just barely visible through the gathering dusk. A chill ran down her spine as she glimpsed glowing crimson eyes, the same haunting presence she'd felt in the forest a week ago.
"Jessica?" Mrs. Lebowski's concerned voice pulled her from her reverie. "Is everything alright, dear?"
Jessica blinked, the figure vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. "Y-yeah, everything's fine," she stammered, sliding into the backseat next to Salina. "Just thought I saw something, that's all."
Salina shot her a curious look, but Jessica shook her head slightly, unwilling to dwell on the unsettling sighting. As the car pulled away from the curb, she stole one last glance at the darkening tree line, her heart pounding in her chest.
It's just my imagination, she told herself firmly. Nothing's going to happen while I'm gone. Dad can handle it.
But even as the familiar landmarks of Moon Valley disappeared from view, Jessica couldn't shake the nagging sense of foreboding. The shadow of the past lingered, a silent warning that her vacation might not be as carefree as she'd hoped.

The drive to the airport was a blur of nervous anticipation and excited chatter. Kevin babbled on about the resort's amenities, while Salina listened with a rare, genuine smile, occasionally chiming in with a sarcastic quip that had them all laughing. Jessica tried her best to focus on their enthusiasm, to let herself get swept up in the thrill of their impending adventure.
But no matter how hard she tried, her mind kept drifting back to the shadowy figure in the trees, the glowing eyes that seemed to bore into the very depths of her soul. What if it wasn't her imagination? What if something sinister was lurking, just waiting for the chance to strike?
Before she knew it, they were pulling into the airport's bustling drop-off zone. Jessica took a deep, steadying breath as she climbed out of the car, her eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of the eerie presence that had haunted her.
"Ready to go?" Salina asked, bumping her shoulder gently.
Jessica forced a smile, unwilling to dampen the mood. "As ready as I'll ever be."
As they made their way through the crowded terminal, Jessica kept her senses on high alert, her eyes darting from one face to the next, searching for any hint of the supernatural. But all she saw were harried travelers and TSA agents who appeared bored.
Relax, she told herself, taking another deep breath. You're just being paranoid. There's nothing out there.
Still, she couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that something - or someone - was watching her.
The trip through security was a blur, and before long, they were standing at the gate, their boarding passes in hand. Jessica's stomach twisted with a mixture of excitement and trepidation as the announcement for their flight rang out over the intercom.
"That's us!" Kevin exclaimed, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet. "C'mon, let's go!"
Salina rolled her eyes affectionately, grabbing Kevin's arm and tugging him toward the boarding ramp. "Easy there, Kevin. The plane's not going anywhere without us."
Jessica hesitated for a moment, her gaze sweeping the crowded terminal one last time. Just as she was about to turn and follow her friends, a flash of movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention.
There, standing amidst the throng of travelers, was a familiar face - or at least, a familiar figure. Tall and imposing, with a white count hair and piercing crimson eyes, the vampire known as Count Dregan stared back at her, a twisted smile curling his lips.
Jessica's heart lurched in her chest, her fingers trembling as she clutched her boarding pass. It couldn't be. Dregan was dead, she'd seen him crumble to ash with her own eyes. How was he here, watching her from the shadows?
"Jessica?" Mr. Lebowski's concerned voice cut through the fog of her panic. "Are you alright, dear?"
She tore her gaze away from the crowd, meeting his worried eyes. "Y-yeah, I'm fine," she lied, forcing a smile. "Just...thought I saw someone I knew, that's all."
The older man frowned, but before he could press the issue, Salina's voice rang out from the boarding ramp.
"Hey, Barbie Girl! You coming or what?"
Jessica took one last look at the spot where she'd seen Dregan, but the vampire had vanished, leaving her with a growing sense of dread.
"Yeah, I'm coming!" she called back, hurrying to catch up with her friends. As she stepped onto the plane, she couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was terribly, horribly wrong.
It's just your imagination, she told herself, trying to quell the rising panic. Dregan is gone. You're safe now.
But deep down, Jessica knew that the horrors of Moon Valley had a way of following you, no matter how far you tried to run.
