Chapter 2- Memories of potatoes past

Chapter 2-

*thunk**thunk*

The sound of me tilling the ground  fills up the area. I swing a few more times before I stop, pausing to wipe the sweat from my forehead.

"Good job Locke!" Someone behind me then approaches me and pats my head. He has short silver hair and the pupils in his eyes are white, almost indistinguishable from the rest of his eyes. I have the same eyes as him, however, I have Raven black and slightly long hair, almost covering my eyes.

He continues to mess up my hair " If you keep this up, you might put me become even better than me at this!"

I take his hand of my head and chuckle "Of course I will, I'm going to be the greatest farmer of al time!"

He scratches his head and laughs heartily while doing so "That's my boy! Aim high, and you'll never go astray!"

I smile slightly and continue tilling the hard ground.

My dad notices and and does the same, beside me.

After a few minutes of tilling, I stop again abruptly. I drop my hoe and sit down on the ground, tired.

"Done already?" My dad says. "Well what more can you expect from a 7 year old kid? Go, play with your friends, I'll finish up here."

"No thanks." I swat my hand in the air, as if to swat away the idea.

"Well, it's not as if you have any choice, I think I here your wife calling." My dad laughs and tills the ground one more.

"DAD !" I scream "I already told you before, I don't plan on marrying! I want to be devoted to the crops! And besides, Alice is only my friend!" I say rapidly to try and deny his statement.

I then stand up and cross my arms "I don't even hear anyone calling!"

"Locke! Come with me and plaaaaay!" A loud shout interrupted my sentence, as if to dispute it.

"Oh I hate my luck...." I sigh and turn around to see a child, around my age. She has long, yellow, almost golden, hair.

"Oh, Alice, what a surprise!" I try to look delighted.

"Come with me! Let's go play by the forest!" She spins around with a smile bright enough to awe anyone who sees.

I groan and reply "No thanks?"

She then puffs up her cheeks s if mad and grabs my hand.

Alice is thin, but she is not frail by any means. As proof to this statement, she is dragging me off to the forest by my hand as we speak.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"Bye, dad, I'm going to the forest" I shout towards my father, who is now planting seeds in the newly tilled fields.

I see him laugh a bit before he shouts back "Don't get home too late now!"

I then sigh as my cute, but insanely strong friend drags me off to play.

I see my son get dragged off to the forest by his childhood friend.

I laugh and continue to plant seeds in the field.

As I continue to place seeds, I can feel my tears well up in the corner of my eyes.

I slowly sit down and weep, dropping my bag of seeds to wipe my tears eyes.

"I can't believe it's already been seven years since then. If only you could see him now my love, he's grown so much..."

I wipe away the remainder of my tears and look up at the sky.

"It looks like everything will begin soon, my duty calls."

I close my eyes and grimace on what I be required to do later.

I stand up and say silently in my heart

"I'm sorry Locke, I hope you forgive me one day for this."

I sigh and walk towards my house, one last time.

I return from my exhausting play session with Alice.

I see my father's hoe and some seeds scattered by the field. " Strange, dad doesn't leave things outside...."

I pick them up and return the items to the house.

As I enter, I see my dad, dressed in his traveling clothes, while wearing a silver traveling cloak.

I tilt my head and ask "Are you going somewhere?"

He nods and stands up. I think I can see some tears in his eyes.

"Is something wrong?" I ask again while I place his tools into their proper places around our small house.

"Nothing's wrong, Locke. I'll be back." He says as he leaves the house.

"Bye." I weakly say while seeing him depart.

As he leaves and closes the door I hear a faint whisper "I'm sorry"

Little did I know, that was the last time I would ever see my father.
