The Regressor Wants to Die [A Progression LitRPG]
2: The Source of All Catastrophes

2: The Source of All Catastrophes

He stood in the clean bathroom, the titled flooring reflecting his body. Empty cubicles indicated that he was all alone, looking into a broad mirror. He took notice of his somewhat slim body along with his current appearance in the ample lighting, droopy eyes with unruly black hair like he had just stepped out of bed.

“I look so bad.” Do-Yun wasn’t pleased.

This comment didn’t come as a joke, or as a way to dampen his confidence. At this moment, he was far from presentable, especially when he noticed the slightly crumpled black suit he was wearing.

“It looks like hunting for a job is more tedious than hunting Beasts for years,” He laughed, but it wasn’t a lie. The result was in front of him. He was way healthier before, now it seemed like he hadn’t slept for days. And even if there was something that contributed to it, he still had a bigger problem at hand that needed to be solved.

“This should be the location from where I was transferred to the other world.” Do-Yun was certain of it, as it was the day that he could never forget, even if he tried to.

That day, he was whisked away from this comparatively peaceful planet and thrown into a world brimming with beasts that he wouldn’t think of even in his worst nightmares, facing such a world for years before he could come back.

With the turn of the tap cold water rushed out, splashing it on his face Do-Yun felt a little refreshed. Whatever happened had passed, so it should be left in the past. At least, he would’ve liked it that way.

“Well, now that I am back—Bang!!!!” The door to the Washroom swung open and crashed into the tilted wall. Wiping his face with a handkerchief Do-Yun glanced towards the source. There stood an old-looking little green being with crooked teeth, glaring at him with his murky black eyes, covered in nothing but a loincloth.

“Even if I did expect it, at least give me some time to get my thoughts in order.” He complained, but the strange creature—that shouldn’t exist on modern Earth—was now brandishing the blood-stained dagger at him without any care.

Then it lunged towards Do-Yun swinging the dagger in an arc as inelegant as its appearance, the target was Do-Yun neck.

“These green flesh bags are always so full of energy, but they don’t have much intelligence to use it.” Do-Yun raised his hand with a languid look, but he wasn’t getting ready to use a skill.

All of them were taken away from him according to the contract. At this moment, Do-Yun shouldn’t be any different from a regular human, but he wasn’t. He still had a skill that could help him in this situation—whether he liked it or not—so he didn’t need to worry about the attack.

—That is how it was supposed to be.

He understood that something was wrong immediately when the goblin closed the gap, he felt an itch just a little below his Adam’s apple. Throwing his body to the side in a hurry, Do-Yun was able to dodge the dagger but he couldn’t get all of his body out of the way in time. The result of that was simple, he got cut.

“Blood? From a Goblin’s dagger?” Do-Yun stared at the hot red liquid dripping from his left forearm. The cut wasn’t deep as the blade just nicked him, but the fact that he got cut was.

—Kieeeekkk!!

The Goblin, on the other hand, was surprised. This was the first human today who had dodged his blow. And not only that, him dodging the charge caused it to slam head-first into the tiled wall behind him, which cracked upon impact. So, it turned around with renewed vengeance, wanting to stab this human to death only to meet a knee that drove right into its face.

The force of that attack sent the Goblin’s head back, smashing it into the tiled wall. Its fleshy nose was flattened along with the bone as the attack disoriented him. The dagger in its grasp slipped out, falling to the floor with a clink. But that sound was only heard once. In the next instant, the blade sliced through the air before it reached its destination.

—Khhaaak

Holding his neck to stop the blood, the goblin looked up with his blurry eyes, barely catching the same human from before holding his blade with a blank face. Before he understood anything his dagger was gone, and his neck was sliced open.

“Strange…” Leaving the struggling Goblin on the floor, Do-Yun was still more focused on the wound on his arm, and rightfully so.

He came back to earth and in less than a minute, he was attacked by a goblin that shouldn’t be here and he got injured by it. This shouldn’t have happened since he still had that skill. But his confusion soon vanished when the system panels popped up again.

[The Skill Adaptation(EX) has started to adapt to the Randora Flower Poison(E) progress 1%...]

[The Skill Adaptation(EX) has started to adapt to the item Rusty Iron Dagger(F-) progress 1%...]

[The Skill Adaptation(EX) has started to adapt to the Item type: Dagger, progress 0.000001%...]

“Demons are reaaally scary~.” That was all he thought about the current situation after recalling the previous system messages.

His skill was there, but all of the Proficiency he had was lost. For that to happen the Skill Equivalent Exchange should’ve been chipping away at his skill progression from the start, it was a plan to take the skill while chipping away at the adaptation progress of the Skill Equivalent Exchange.

‘Well, that is to be expected. He certainly isn’t the type to take a loss in any capacity.’ Do-Yun smiled. The plan still failed in the end so that was the end. The skill was still with him, and the rank remained the same.

Shaking his head he took off his black coat–which was stained with blue blood–and rolled up the bloodied sleeve of his white collared shirt. Tying the wound on his forearm with a handkerchief and part of the coat he tore off with the dagger. With the bleeding stemmed Do-Yun stepped out of the once-clean Washroom, leaving the dead goblin behind in a pool of its own blood.

‘This isn’t good,’ This was his first thought as soon as he stepped out.

The nicely lighted hall in front of him had a bunch of human bodies, getting stabbed by three goblins with gleeful laughs. The white tiles had turned red with the constant stream of fresh blood as the sound of flesh tearing and breaking bones echoed in the hallways.

—ShiK!

This was when one of them turned to look towards the bathroom because of a sudden squeaky sound, but what he saw was Do-Yun stepping in front of him as his leather shoes made another similar sound.

Before the goblin could even utter a warning, the dagger in his hand stabbed between Goblin A’s eyebrow. Passing through his skull and into his brain, blue blood spurted from the wound as it died.

—Kieekh!

Hearing the sound of the skull being punctured alerted Goblin B and Goblin C, they turned around to see what happened. But Goblin C went back tumbling because Goblin A’s body slammed into him. Goblin B, who had his attention taken away by its two flying comrades, couldn’t react to Do-Yun's attack that cut through his windpipe in one simple slice.

And as Goblin C came to his senses, the dagger in Do-Yun’s hand was already routed to his head before it could even stand up, it pierced through the skull and entered the brain. That is how three goblins were killed in less than 20 seconds.

“It is tough taking these daggers out of their skulls.” Do-Yun groaned pulling out the daggers from the skulls of Goblin A and C.

He had to use more force than what was needed to stick those daggers in, but he couldn’t leave them be. After painstakingly retrieving his weapons, his eyes turned to the humans. They were still bleeding profusely but weren’t moving. He turned the bodies over, and sure enough they were dead.

“I would be spooked if they survived after getting stabbed that many times. After all, they are normal people.” Do-Yun muttered while examining the expression on their faces.

Even if they had passed, the look of horror remained on their face. He could even see tears and smell something he didn’t want to, it was slightly bearable with the scent of blood in the air.

But among this crowd of 10 bodies, there was one guy who died with a face that wasn’t painted with fear. And he was the one who got the most stab wounds and slight cuts.

“Lee Jae-Sung, HR Manager, hmm…” Do-Yun read the IDs around the necks of these people. They were all employees of this company. But this name caught his attention, and digging through his memory he understood why.

“Didn’t I have the final interview with him before I got sent to the other world?” He did remember being particularly nervous that day, which is why he was in the Washroom.

He was trying to psyche himself up for the final interview, it was important since it would decide if he could land the job. Leaving that aside, there was another interesting detail here. Among the 10 bodies here, 7 belonged to the HR department.

“Looks like their escape didn’t go well.” Do-Yun looked at the stab wounds on the group, whether they were male or female didn’t seem to matter here. After all, they were all brutally stabbed to death as they bled, and it even continued after death. Monsters were such cruel beings, as they did not care for anything.

“Well, it is to be expected.” He turned his head to look behind him. Two goblins were running towards him at this very moment with their bare feet smacking against the floor, this made it easy to notice them even if the duo was planning a sneak attack.

“Respect the dead, will you?” Do-Yun stood up when the goblins were within a range of 20 feet. Throwing the daggers in his hands towards the Goblin on the left, he aimed to take it out at once.

“Oh, come on,” But he groaned. Only one dagger stuck into the Goblin when both struck him. The first dagger dug into its gut spilling out its blood as it cut through the intestines, but the second dagger’s blunt bone handle struck it on the head instead.

At least it wasn’t a waste, that strike to the head resulted in the Goblin falling. So, now it was one-on-one with the other one. This Goblin was rushing towards him with a wide smirk as Do-Yun was unarmed, that is how it looked from his side.

“Too bad for you that I already gathered the rest,” Do-Yun dodged the Goblin’s attempt to stab him in the chest, and stuck the dagger he pulled out of the jacket into its neck then rushed forward, doing the same to the Goblin that was tumbling on the floor trying to take the dagger out of its body. With this, he had again defeated the Goblins and was left alone in the quiet hallway.

“This body sure is troublesome.” Do-Yun sighed.

He hadn’t been moving around for 10 minutes total, but he was already feeling out of breath. His muscles were sore and his body asked for some rest, but he kept moving. After gathering all of the daggers of these Goblins, he placed the six weapons in the coat tied around his waist.

“Need to reach the house to rest…… Hopefully, it is still there.” Do-Yun patted the non-existent dust off his shoulder and walked under the flickering lights of the messy hallway.

The work areas he went through were especially in bad condition, probably because of the panic. Broken computers and other machines, with work desks turned upside down and broken glasses all over the floor made him mind his step.

Even in this environment where the footing was minimal, he was ready to attack at any given time. His ears were ready to catch any movement as he continued forward and kept two daggers in his hands.

His destination? The main exit of the building. To reach there he decided to go through the main stairs, instead of the emergency stairs.

‘Normal hallways are wide, and there are turns which allow the Goblins to lay in wait to pick up on scrambling Humans.’ Do-Yun sidestepped in a flash—to dodge the attack to his abdomen—when he reached a corner in the hallway that led to the Main stairs.

“Just like this little friend of ours.” Slashing the Goblin’s neck in one clean strike, he walked away without turning back.

That was how Do-Yun descended from the 5th floor of this office building, killing all of the Goblins he came across along his way even going out of his way to find them. And after 40 minutes, he reached the reception on the first floor.

“Once again, none are alive…” Do-Yun had also checked the bodies he found along the way.

They had all passed on due to excessive bleeding from fatal wounds that riddled their bodies. A good number of them were also sprawled across this marbled floor, but this time it wasn’t just human bodies. And there was something to note about the Goblin bodies.

“Hmm, Bullet wounds…?” Do-Yun examined the holes in the bodies of these Goblins, along with the shells on the ground not that far from them. His eyes darted around to check the language on the posters, and sure enough, it was Hangul. So, considering the laws set in place, this could only mean one thing.

“The army has already been deployed and is using live ammunition in the city?” This gave him a good understanding of what was going on outside. With monsters like Goblins running around, there was no other choice but to use live ammunition. But the problem was that this happened too quickly.

“And here I thought I could relax a little…” Do-Yun decided to not think about it, stepping towards the entrance of the building. The distant screams ringing in his ears were now getting clear.

“Ahhhh!!”

“Everyone! Please follow the orders!”

“S-Save me!!”

“Run south, I repeat, Run South!!”

“Argh!! S-Someone help!”

The panicked civilians running for their lives, the gleeful laughter of the Goblins who were after them, the pleas of the injured and the ones who were about to die under the feet of this mob, with the desperate shouts of the soldiers trying to help these people, but they failed to do so. The Goblins kept killing more civilians in the crowd, driving them into further frenzy.

No one was able to gain control over this and stop lives from being lost. It was a horrible sight with the cries of children being snubbed out by other humans who were too deaf to hear.

Was it a chaotic situation? Yes. But there was a more apt way of describing the scene in front of his eyes.

“The Source of All Catastrophes has arrived on Earth,” Do-Yun wiped the few drops of blue blood off his face. His sharp eyes fixed on the tall yet crooked tower in the distance, he knew that dark and imposing figure well enough.

He has seen it more times than he would’ve liked to.
