The North

Chapter 11 - The North

Where am I?

I don't know.

Maybe I overdid it. Just a bit. I misscalculated. It produced way more force than I thought it would. It's cold here. It's snowing. That's not good. It was warm just a while ago.

I only flew for about 2 minutes though? But I'm definitely not in Avongale anymore. I wonder jsut how much distance I covered. Since I easily broke the soundbarrier, an estimate of about 20.000 to 60.000 km/h shouldn't be too far off. That also roughly matches the distance to where I should be if I extrapolate and compare the distance I was able to cover in the one week long travel along the forest with where I should roughly be on the map.

A lot of distance lies between different climate zones. Well, I don't think I will be visiting Avongale City anytime soon now. Starting my search for the rifts here or there won't make much of a difference to me.

By the way, I think I actually landed somewhat close to another one. I can vaguely feel it in the distance. Not like I've got anything better to do.

I quickly climb my way out of the small crater I made when I smashed into this mountain with the rest velocity that wasn't converted into heat yet. At least my mana protected my body from the friction and the impact. I hope my fiery flight won't end up being made into a legend though, I probably scared quite a lot of people today.

Hmm, the rift seems to be even more north than I currently am right now. About a weeks journey if I were to travel on foot. Not that I'm going to though. Even if my mana easily protects me from the cold, I'm not a lunatic. I don't have to walk everywhere.

I want to try more refined methods of travel. Blasting myselft through the sky is really not that elegant. Maybe I could try skiing? I never tried it before though. Well, it won't be too hard, right? I certainly hope so.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Having decided on a plan, I quickly shape my mana into some ski-like objects and crystalized them when I finished the design. They look fine to me, but somehow I feel like I missed something. Can't have been that important then. I bound them to my feet with mana and began my descent down the mountain, towards the next rift.

Since it has been snowing here for a while apparently, there are basically no obstacles I could crash into. Just a seemingly neverending blanket of powdery white. I like snow.

...

Err, how do I brake again? That cliff over there seems awfully inconvenient. Well, nothing that a bit of mana cannot solve.

Actually, can't I use something like wingsuit? Shooting myself high up into the sky is no problem, and the wingsuit is also no problem. A bit more moderation would be nice though. I don't want to end up in space after all. Not yet at least.

Having decided on a new plan, I blast myself high into the sky. I condense a pair of wings, each filling the space between an arm and the corresponding leg and begin to quickly glide towards the rift I'm sensing. Should take me about 3 to 4 hours if I maintain maximum velocity, not a problem if I regularly boost my altitude with a little air manipulation.

Hmm, the mana this rift emmits is a bit different from the last one I closed. It has a similar vibe but it's mana signature is different. I don't know whether thats a good sign or not. I definitely wouldn't put my money on that. Not that I have any to begin with.

It also looks a bit different from the other rift. This one appears more like a cut and it's not as fragmented as the other one. At least there is no vegation it could possibly kill anywhere close by. Judging by the amount of mana flowing out of there, It should also be a lot older than the other rift.

I start calming the turbulent space down just like I did with the first rift. After all, why change a working method?

Huh, for some reason it feels like it's way easier to close this rift, even though it's much bigger than the previous one. Maybe the weird skill [Dimensional Lv. NaN] that I got with the quest is interfering/helping? Well, I don't care that much anyways. Done is done. I successfully closed it.
