The Lost Sun - Volume 3 Chapter 2 (Revamp)

Yea. I haven't written my fanfic in while but here you go. Tell me what you think.

To Heal is to War

Spoiler :

It was restless on the city walls that night in Seinbain. It couldn’t be helped since the monster army could strike at any time since the scouts had reported that the enemies were closing in on their location. Soldiers had to keep watch in case of a surprise enemy attack, which they would then wake up all of the soldiers that were resting.

If they were able to get any rest that is.

Many of the soldiers were sleep deprived as they lay in their cots as they thought of the enormous monster army that stood before them. They had, in the past, repelled many monsters from Seinbain’s city gates but all of those past experiences paled in comparison to the magnitude of this monstrous army.

However, if things remained as they were then the army would be exhausted and thus unable to put up any resistance against the monsters. Sun and the other priests, on orders from a high ranking official of the Church of Freya, were walking throughout the resting quarters of the Kallamore soldiers and casting a basic level Slumber spell to make the soldiers sleep.

Although it was fairly dangerous for the city for its army to be out of commission, they could swiftly wake up all the soldiers by using a large area of effect Dispel to remove the effects of Slumber. The sun rose from over the horizon, signaling that morning had come. All of the priests cast their Dispel magic to waken the soldiers. The soldiers had received an adequate amount of rest and had quickly had to get into their positions to fight.

Off to the side of the soldiers were their commanding officers, the Royal Kallamore Knights. Although their power had waned after the disappearance of their invincible knight captain several decades before, they were still a force to be reckoned with. They were busy feeding their mounts to prepare for the charge against the enemy and completing a check on all the necessary supplies for each of their squadrons.

The churches weren’t idling around either. The priests from the Church of Freya and the Church of Lu, the two main churches in Seinbain, were busy organizing their holy knights into squads in order to assist the soldiers and knights in battle. Sun took a look at his own squadron of holy knights from the Church of Freya.

Most of the higher level holy knights had been sent to lead other squads of holy knights or had already been taken under Calvin’s command. Despite this, Sun still had many powerful holy knights that were around level 300. Sun had been allowed a maximum of 50 holy knights, of which he had sent 10 of them to go assist the Royal Knights in exchange for his friends, whom had been part of the militia, to join his squad. So he now had 40 holy knights, his five friends, Alena, and himself.

Although the overall size of his troops received a penalty of 5 units because he had traded 10 holy knights for his 5 friends, Sun knew this was going to help him significantly more than if he had kept the holy knights. There was nothing wrong with having holy knights since they were all very strong with their swords, shields, holy magic, and healing spells. The problem with holy knights were that they were very specialized classes which did not possess any skill sets aside from their defensive capabilities and melee fighting prowess.

The main skills of holy knights were combat related holy buffs, lesser healing spell, and defensive related holy buffs. They had no skills in any other field, which meant a severely low number of different tactics they could perform. Thankfully, the priests of the churches were there to supplement for the deficiencies that the holy knights such as strong status buffs. Although holy knights had strong buffs, they were very short term buffs that had long cooldowns. Priests were different in this respect in that they had a large variety of spells at their disposal. Healing was another large concern with holy knights since their healing was weak in comparison to a priest’s heals.

Aside from having his friends with him during the battle, he chose to include his friends into his squad in order to add skill varieties into his group so that they could have more tactics at their disposal.

Smoke.

The city had lit a fire signal to warn everyone about the enemy. Some of the priests began casting Dispel on those who had not yet awaken, while the remaining priests began casting support buffs on their squad’s soldiers. The Royal Archers headed to the top of the castle walls and cocked their quivers. Soldiers stood on standby on the castle walls to defend the archers from stray arrows. They also had the task of repelling enemy attempts to scale the wall through any means. Mages stood at guard towers, sketching out magic circles to perform large scale magic attacks and summon familiars. Almost everyone had a role to play in this war.

Now that the war had started, the adventurers that had been resting in the city’s inns began to appear. Their numbers were largely comprised of knights, which was hardly surprising since defending Seinbain would give them Honor stat points. Even with this large concentration of knights, there were still a significant number of other professions that had come to Seinbain with the prospect of making a profit off of hunting and other adventurers.

Still, it was not very comforting to see these adventurers. Although they had been conscripted to fight against the monster army, they were comparable to a disorganized mob since they had no military capability. Even in normal combat they could be considered sub-par since they had never considered the notion of real-life combat experience playing a role in a virtual reality game.

It was better than nothing though. The enemy army began its slow march to the front of the castle. They were in great number, much more than usual. Based on their reports, the monster army numbered in tens of thousands. The total fighting force of the city of Seinbain which were the soldiers, Royal Knights, the Church of Freya and Lu, and the adventurers only numbered a mere 15 thousand.

Reinforcements from the other churches were on their way, but they were still coming and needed a significant amount of time before they could arrive. Even with teleportation, for such a large scale magic teleportation it would require a significant amount of magic and resources. So until they could get the appropriate preparations complete, they had to defend Seinbain from the monsters.

All over the castle walls were squadron leaders that commanded over the soldiers and archers. The soldiers took up bows as well and took aim at the enemies.

“FIRE!”

Once the monsters had gotten within the vicinity of the firing range, the squad leaders yelled to their subordinates to fire arrows. At their command, thousands of arrows flew at the monster army. Thanks to their topography advantage, they rained down countless arrows on the monsters below.

The weaker monsters such as the wolves, bears, and spiders were heavily damaged from the arrows but the stronger monsters were largely unharmed. Either they were completely unaffected like the Demi-Dragons with their tough defensive scales or they received miniscule damage due to their large health pools such as Giant Ogres. There were, of course, enemies that could not be harmed by normal arrow attacks, such as spectres. The monster army was comprised of countless different types of monsters, which made it extremely difficult to fight against due to its complexity of combat types.

“All units are to provide support until I command otherwise!”

With only around fifty units, it was far too dangerous to try and charge at the enemy. It was also very foolish if they try to fight on the ground level and give up their geographical advantage. The main goal at the time was to whittle down the enemies with arrows and magic until they get too close to the walls, at which point the Knights would deploy.

Although the Holy Knights were a melee based fighting class, they weren’t completely idling around. Sun did not have much experience with warfare. Back in the Church of the God of Light, there had not been any major wars in several generations since the continent was at peace. This did not mean that he was completely inexperienced with commanding. Both in this world and in his own, he had commanded holy knights to fight against the undead.

Although the Holy Knights could not show their true prowess behind these walls, they could still support the ranged classes and also kill flying or spirit type monsters.

“What should we do?”

His party members, on the other hand, were rather confused at what their roles were in siege warfare. The more obvious members, Hou Yi and Xuehua, were busy with their roles in firing arrows and magic respectively. Alena, as a Magic Marksman, had the option of both archery and magic so she was busy shooting away. On the other hand, Da Xia, Yong Li and Feng Yun as the melee classes did not know what they should be doing since the melee fighting has not occurred yet.

Sun thought for a moment. It was rather pointless to have them just stand there doing nothing, but he also had to consider that they needed to be available when it was time to fight in close combat. They couldn’t provide support like the Holy Knights and their classes were very specialized for use in general combat.

An assassin, a heavy warrior, and a rune knight.

All classes that focused on increasing their own specializations. Sun considered having them use bows to fire arrows, but decided against it since they would not inflict any considerable damage and it would be a waste of arrows.

“Ah!”

Then he remembered something. Reaching into his bag, he took out a number of different items and spread them out on the floor.

“You need to pass these out to the mages and archers around us.”

“What are they?”

Feng Yun looked at the bottled liquids inquisitively.

“Potions.”

Sun had crafted a large number of magical reagents using his magic crafting subskill. Without rare ingredients there was a limit to his repertoire of items but there was still enough variety for the potions to be useful. Most of the potions that he had taken out where low grade mana potions and status increase potions. Since mages and archers were a huge portion of their damage, it was important to keep their reserves full so that they could cast more spells and fire more skills.

“Afterwards, use these to attack the enemies.”

Sun also handed them a small number of explosives that he had crafted. They were vastly inferior to magic and archery skills, but it was a good alternative for a melee fighter to deal damage to a large number of enemies.

Now that Sun had finished handing out all of his commands, it was his turn to start taking action. He took out his Pope stick from his inventory and started casting his support spells. Priests were one of the most influential classes in large scale combat, much more than most combat classes. Their spells could influence a large number of allies for a significant amount of time. They also had a wide variety of skills that were ideal for war such as buffs, large area of effect attacks, barriers, heals, and even debuffs for enemies.

“My body feels so much lighter.”

Some of the soldiers on the castle walls said as they hacked away at a flying gargoyle. Many of the other squads began to cast their buffs on the surroundings soldiers, increasing their combat ability and survivability by leaps and bounds.

Siege warfare was about endurance so it was going to be a long battle. The enemies were still large in number and it didn’t look like it was going to end anytime soon. Thirty minutes into the fight, the monsters finally managed to disable all the traps that had been set up and started advancing past the rain of arrows. It looked like it was finally time to open the castle gates and let out the melee fighters.

Sun gathered all his melee combatants together to begin fighting against the monsters. There were a significant amount of enemies but they did not need to fight all of them at once. Most of the monsters would be preoccupied with the rain of arrows and their inability to advance towards the castle. So they only needed to fight a small number of enemies in the front at a time. Hou Yi, Xuehua, and Alena would stay at the top of the castle walls but this time they were no longer shooting randomly at enemies. Their roles now would be to support Sun’s squadron from above.

“Advance!”

The castle gates opened and the Kallamore Knights galloped on their horses to the enemy soldiers. Using their enhanced mobility, they kited around the monsters and overpowered them with their might. The Kallamore Knights plowed through a large number of monsters and continued charging. Although it was a powerful charge, they now had to retreat from enemy lines and build up momentum before they could charge again. Luckily they lured off some of the enemy monsters, which broke up the enemy army’s formation.

The users began to pour out of the games in great numbers. There had been a considerable amount of knights so they charged out of the castle with their mounts. However, they were soon followed by the other melee type classes.

Unlike the Kallamore Knights, the knight users were not as powerful or as organized to kite enemy soldiers. So after the initial charge, they kinda rode around on their horses, at least those whose horses didn’t die on the first charge, and stabbed things to death. The other melee fighters began to split into small groups and fight against the monsters. There wasn’t any sense of organization but they were strong enough to put up a decent fight against the monsters.

“Charge!”

Luckily for them, the Holy Knights from the Church of Freya and Church of Lu had also dispatched from the castle gates. They left a number of their forces on the walls to maintain its defenses, as well as a large number of their priests, but the Holy Knight were still an imposing force.

“Don’t get separated from each other. Focus on defense when attacking!”

The main characteristic of a Holy Knight that defined them distinctly from normal knights was their holy magic and significantly increased defensive capabilities. Their damage was not as high as a normal knight’s but they compensated for that damage with their holy skills.

Sun’s group began fighting alongside the other holy knights from the Church of Freya.

“Yaaaah!”

Yong Li swung his large two handed sword, slicing through lower level monsters and knocking back many others. His slow attack speed left him vulnerable for a moment, but thankfully the Holy Knights were there to watch his back.

Each person had a role to play in this fight.

Feng Yun was an assassin, which was normally a good class to have in a siege. That is, if you were on the attacking side. When attacking a castle, the assassins were usually sent in to kill enemy commanders to incite panic. However, when on the defensive, the assassin class had great difficulty fighting due to the large number of enemies.

Even if her class specialty was mostly lost in this sort of battle, Sun had suggested that she perform hit and run tactics. She would go in and critically damage an enemy, then retreat behind the defensive line of Holy Knights. For a squishy class such as herself, this was the best solution to deal the most damage while receiving as little as possible.

In contrast to the Assassin class, Da Xia’s Rune Knight class was aptly suited for large scale combat. Much like a Priest’s buffs, her magic rune enchantments gave her increased combat ability for a duration of time. Her class only had a few negative aspects, such as she couldn’t enchant runes on others since it was fueled by her own mana. Since it was fueled by her own mana, whenever the time limit on a rune ran out it would automatically renew itself using her mana unless she cancels its activation. Over long periods of time it would consume significant amounts of mana.

Thankfully that problem was solved due to the magic crystals that they had acquired awhile ago. From slaying the Corrupted Wolf boss, they had acquired a unique mana crystal that stores mana for them. Sun had made sure that they had filled up the crystal full of mana before the fight had begun, with sufficient time for them to replenish their natural pool of mana. As long as they kept taking mana out of the crystal, their mana pool was essentially doubled.

This worked wonders for Da Xia’s Rune Knight class and even better for Xuehua’s Ice Mage class.

Having a large mana pool essentially doubled a class’s skill capacity, and this was most evident for the Holy Priest class.

Sun had already had a large pool of mana, which was now doubled after acquiring the mana crystal. As a Holy Priest, all of his equipment focused on increasing spell potency and decreasing mana costs. Furthermore, most items with magic rarity and higher usually had the option of increasing mana regeneration. So even the amount of mana he lost over time was greatly reduced. Naturally, his mana regen was not higher than his mana usage but it slowed down his mana loss considerably.

“Heal!”

Sun threw some healing magic here and there. Mostly at his own squad of Holy Knights, but also at the surrounding soldiers that were injured. Aside from healing magic, he refreshed his buffs on the surrounding soldiers and refueled their stamina. Every two or three healing spells, he would cast a crowd control spell on a dozen or so enemies. If everyone was in good health, then he would wait and recover mana. If there was an opportunity to attack then he would quickly cast a magic attack before he resumed his healing.

Even Sun’s low level heals replenished a large chunk of health so by repeatedly casting low level heals that had no cast time and low mana costs, he was able to heal his soldiers into immortality. Naturally they would still die if they got killed in a single blow, but the Holy Knights had more than enough defensive capabilities to withstand several heavy blows without falling.

“Grant fortitude. Ice Wall.”

Every so often, several walls of ice would form in front lines of the monsters around Sun’s group which halted the enemy army’s advance. Sun looked up to the spelltower to see Xuehua had cast a large area of effect Ice Wall to stop the enemy monsters. This gave Sun’s squad an opportunity to reform their formations and for them to switch out their damaged equipment. A fear that many soldiers had during battle was that their equipment would break, leaving them defenseless to their aggressors.

“Fire!”

A large rain of arrows followed the ice wall’s formation, pouring down onto the surrounding enemies.

“Snipe! Snipe! Snipe! God damn! There’s so many enemies! Snipe!”

Hou Yi kept firing his bow while using his Snipe ability, which allowed him to deal higher critical damage to enemies. The strength in an archer was in having a large line of archers to decimate the enemy. Hou Yi, however, was a Sharpshooting class archer which focused on critical damage. Naturally he still had many passive skills that increased his archer stats, but his true abilities were in taking down a single large enemy. With so many enemies, there was nothing he could focus his attacks on since it would most likely die before his arrows reached it. So he just kept shooting slightly beyond the front line so that his arrows would hit a monster instead of just a dead body.

Although Alena was also a ranged archer class, she did not have the same problems that Hou Yi had. She was a Magic Marksman, which was a hybrid class of archers and mages that focused on enchanting arrows with magic or using magic itself as the arrow. Much like Sun’s Holy Arrow attack, these magic arrows were not affected by gravity and were simply lock on spells. Unlike traditional arrows, these magic arrows could be imbued with special effects which made them useful in a large range of situations.

In this situation, Sun thought that creating confusion amongst the enemy ranks would be more beneficial than slaying individual enemies. That was why he told Alena that it would be best to use the flashiest skills that she had.

“Destroy the enemy with fire. Combustion Shot!”

Alena mainly focused on skills that produced large area of effects such as explosion attacks. So the main elements that she used were fire and lightning since they had the largest area of effect damage and produced the most sound and light. These two factors created confusion amongst the enemy. With her mana crystal, she was able to shoot without reserve since there was still plenty of mana.

In siege warfare, it was foolish to try and fight without having an army of ranged attackers. However, this was true for both sides of the war.

“Archers sighted! There’s thousands of them!”

After the soldiers were busy with the front lines of the monsters, there was a large unit of monsters that had ranged capabilities in the middle of the monster army. They were protected by the large wall of melee monsters so they were difficult to reach. Now within the range of the arrows, they could now be fired upon. But that meant the same for the monster army as well. Now that the monster archers were in range, that meant that the Kallamore Archers archers were in range as well.

“Grrrroooowl!”

There was a large bear that was standing on its forelegs and holding a large bow. Next to this bear was a large variety of other monsters with long distance weapons and magic users.

-Swish-

Thousands of ranged attacks flew towards the castle walls towards the allied archers. The arrows that did not reach the range began to fall on the soldiers in front of the castle. Many of the fighters on the ground lifted their shields to defend from the arrows. Sun cast protective magic over his area to shield against most of the arrows that had missed their mark.

“Shit!”

Sun quickly turned around towards the castle walls. Although he had managed to shield his own squad from getting pinned by the arrow attack, a vast majority of the arrows and all of the magic was aimed at the troops stationed on top of the castle walls. The soldiers on top of the walls took out their shields. They were there to prevent stray arrows from hitting the archers and to stop monsters from invading. It looked pretty grim for them since they were now faced with an onslaught of arrows.

“Holy Barrier!”

The arrows and magic crashed into a large defensive barrier that had formed around the walls. Some of the arrows bounced off of the shield but a vast majority of them managed to penetrate the shield. The archers remained completely unharmed though. This was because after passing through the shield, the arrows lost almost all of their forward momentum and then gravity forced them downwards.

“Haaaah haaaaaaaah haaah…”

A priest on top of the castle was having ragged breaths. It was to be expected since he had depleted all of his remaining mana in a single instant. As a Barrier Priest, Calvin’s protective magic was unmatched against all other support classes. Now that he no longer had any mana left, he would be unable to perform another large scale barrier like that. He took a chug out of a mana potion that a female knight had handed earlier in the battle. It replenished some mana, but not enough to cast any large scale magic. Calvin drank a few more bottles to replenish enough mana so that he could use support magic at least.

“Priests, prepare protective magic!”

Calvin shouted out an order to the rest of the squadrons. With such a large number of priests, they would be able to create a barrier that could defend against a few waves of ranged attacks. However, they did not have enough priests to maintain the barrier forever. The enemy ranged attackers had to be dealt with soon.

“Onwards!”

The ground troops shouted as they pushed forwards into enemy lines. They had to take down the enemy ranged attackers before they broke through the priests’ defensive barrier.

“Neeeeeeiggh!”

The Kallamore Knights had finished off the dispatchment of monsters that had chased after them and had turned around to charge once more. Using the amazing speed of their mounts, the Kallamore Knights cleaved through enemy lines right into the archer formation. Destroying the ranged formation and decimating a significant number of monsters, the Kallamore Knights continued charging through enemy lines.

This was the opportunity that the melee forces needed to turn the tide of the battle. With the ranged formation crushed, the mage unit on the spell towers cast a wide variety of magic spells at the enemy ranged unit. In their confusion, the magic precisely struck the enemy ranged unit. Magic rained down on the middle of the enemy army for a minute until the magic dispersed. A vast majority of the enemy’s ranged unit had been killed so they were going to be unable to remake their formation.

Even with the ranged unit gone, there still were tens of thousands of enemy melee units to fight against and the high level boss monsters had still yet to be killed. Giant class boss monsters still lumbered at the back of enemy lines.

Before fighting those giant boss monsters, they needed to somehow fight through the enemy that was in front of them.

Sun picked up his Pope stick and started waving it at the enemy. He REPLACEed a few vials of Holy Water into the Pope stick and began spraying the Holy Knights with his Holy Water. He needed to keep them blessed since he needed to use as much mana as he could to cast his large scale magic.

Sun focused all of his mana into his next attack. He erected his Pope stick and aimed it into the air towards the enemy monsters.

“Light, come forth and smite the darkness. Reveal thy form as the slayer of evil. Rain down justice upon the worshippers of evil. Holy Arrow Rain!”

A colossal amount of Holy Arrows shot out of his Pope Stick into the air. The number of Holy Arrows was almost comparable to the amount of arrows that the allied army had shot earlier in the battle. The Holy Arrows flew through the air and started striking the soldiers of the monster army. For monsters that had the darkness attribute, the Holy Arrows were twice as effective.

Sun was exhausted from spending all of his mana to create as many Holy Arrows that his mana pool could take but then he grabbed the mana crystal necklace around his neck and drew forth all of the mana inside.

“Holy Burst!”

Giant beams of holy light rained down from the sky, smashing into the enemy monsters. Unlike when he was low level, Holy Burst now dealt a significantly larger amount of damage to a larger number of enemies. It’s damage could not be compared to single target spells such as the Sword of Light that he had used against the Corrupted Wolf boss, but it was ideal for dealing damage to a large number of enemies. Although his two large scale area of effect skills had dealt massive damage to a large number of enemies, he had only managed to kill about a thousand that had already been injured and deal damage to about two thousand others.

“Haaaack!”

Sun coughed loudly as he fell to his knees from mana exhaustion. He had consumed all of his mana, not once but twice in a row. It was not a good feeling to have.

“Sun are you okay?”

Da Xia asked as she ran over while Feng Yun and Yong Li looked over with concern.

“Yea...ha….....just…haa………..tired!”

Sun said in between gasps of air. Yong Li walked over and helped him to his feet. After Sun had managed to regain his breath, he ordered to the Holy Water drenched Holy Knights.

“I’m out of mana so I need to meditate now. I won’t have enough mana to heal you so be sure to watch how much mana you have left.”

Sun pointed at one of the stronger Holy Knights.

“Bob, be sure to lead them properly.”

“My name is Ethan.”

“Whatever, just make sure no one dies. Work together and heal the people that are hurt.”

Sun got off of Yong Li’s shoulder and walked back to the castle gate to meditate. It wouldn’t be any good if he tried meditating in the middle of the enemy army and then got hit by a stray battle ax.

“Thanks for helping me back.”

The three of them escorted Sun back to the castle gates since it was still dangerous. Even though he had unleashed terrifying magic a few moments before, it still did not change that fact that he was a fragile priest.

“Go back to the Holy Knights and help them fight. If you get hurt, then ask one of them to heal you.”

Since they received rewards based on contribution, it was best that they fought as much as they could. Thankfully they had the protection of the Holy Knights so they didn’t need to have a Priest with them this time. Sun took out his Pope stick and waved his Holy Water onto them and then he sat down and started meditating.

“The enemy is retreating!”

Sun heard a soldier shout at the top of the castle.

‘Now that can’t be right. The enemy army still has an enormous amount of monsters left.’

But surely enough the monster army began to back away from the castle walls.

“Victory!”

“Praise to the Goddess Freya!”

The soldiers were cheering triumphantly. The users also had their time to celebrate.

“Yea! We won! I wonder what I’m going to get with my contribution.”

“I’m going to get a new horse with my Honor.”

“I’m hungry. Shit I’m out of barley bread. Gotta go get some more.”

With the exception of the last one, they all sounded pretty cheerful.

Still, Sun thought to himself. ‘What could have made the monsters retreat?’

***

“What is with this massive amount of monsters?”

The winged man said with disgust as he looked down on the back of the monster army.

“No, I can’t be distracted by this. I need to find where the traitorous god has fled.”

At that moment a number of arrows and magic attacks were shot towards the winged man. His auto-defensive shield mechanism activated to deflect the ranged attacks. He looked down to see many giant class boss monsters that had attacked him.

“I suppose that I can spare a moment.”

The winged man materialized a beautiful golden sword out of thin air. He took a stance and then accelerated downwards. His entire body was covered in intense holy light as he continued to pick up speed. Soon he flew right into the line of giant class boss monsters.

The giant class boss monsters all attacked with their unique boss type magic and swung their weapons. All of these attacks were either dodged by the winged man or nullified by his protective shield.

Soon the winged man appeared in front of the monster army and then he swung his sword.

“Winged. Slayer!”

A giant shockwave of holy light shot out from his blade and slashed through enemy lines, killing thousands of high level monsters and several of the boss class monsters. One of the boss level monsters, gave a shout of surprise and started yelling at the rest of the monster army. Soon enough the monster army blew a horn and began to retreat.

Faced with an army in front and a monster in the back, it seemed that they had no choice but to flee. Since it was high policy to not attack fleeing enemies, the winged man looked at the monsters with scrutiny.

“That’s the emblem of the traitorous god!”

The winged man looked at the emblem and then put all the pieces together.

“So that’s how it is. Damn it!”

The winged man cursed and then flew away to inform the rest of his comrades.

The soldiers took a well deserved break from fighting. However, a few were still placed on watch to see if the enemy was going to return. At the end of the war, the users were compensated according to their levels of contribution to the war effort. Thankfully because they had followed Sun, everyone in their party received ample rewards for the battle.

All of them received contribution to the Church of Freya for fighting on its behalf alongside the Holy Knights. Naturally since the quest was to defend Seinbain, all of them gained contribution to the Kallamore Kingdom.

There were significant casualties among the forces of the Kallamore Kingdom, but thankfully most of those casualties were the users that had died because of their own incompetence.

Sun still had some doubts about the monster army so he confronted Calvin about them.

“I suppose that you do have a point.”

Sun had three major questions about the monster army.

Why had they been in such an organized army?

Why attack Seinbain?

Why did they retreat?

Although they had driven away the enemy, none of those questions had been answered. Calvin was deep in thought and then told Sun to follow him to the castle.

“Tell Lord Andres that Calvin from the Church of Freya would like to discuss an important matter of the church with him.”

Calvin told the Royal Knight that was stationed at the castle. Soon enough they entered a conference room where a young, gentlemanly man stood to meet them. Although he was young, it was apparent that he was overflowing with a leader’s charisma. This man was most likely a lord that was very influential in Kallamore Kingdom’s politics.

“It’s nice to see you again Calvin. What matter does the church wish to discuss?”

Calvin began to explain his concerns with the monster army. Andres nodded his head in understanding.

“I see. Just as you had said, this situation is hardly ideal for us.”

“So you agree?”

Andres took the situation into consideration.

“Something needs to be done, but I can’t spare much given our situation. At most, I could send a single knight to investigate but that would not accomplish much.”

Calvin reluctantly agreed.

“The war situation is not one where we can send a large dispatch. The enemy could strike again at any time and we need to be prepared. However, if you are willing to send a single knight then it might be possible.”

“Explain.”

“This is Sun, a Holy Priest of the Church of Freya. He has more than proven his ability to provide support and collect information. If you are able to provide a knight, then it might be possible.”

Andres still wasn’t completely on board with the idea.

“Do you remember in the middle of the battle against the monster army when battlefield lit up for a moment?”

“Are you implying that this man here was the one responsible for those two large light attacks?”

Calvin didn’t say anything further and simply nodded.

“Alright. However, I have a condition. Aside from the knight that I provide, you can only bring one more person along.”

“Why this condition?”

“Because we are already pressed for manpower as it is. I will not be able to provide a well trained Kallamore Knight so you will only be able to get a Knight-in-Training. Also, this condition is because we need as many people as we can to fight when the time comes so you will only be allowed to take one person with you.”

“I see. Then I accept.”

Sun waited at the front of the castle with Alena. He could have chosen someone else to go with him, but Alena seemed like the best choice since she had the most versatile skills.

“I offer my sincere apologies for my tardiness.”

A monotonous voice came from the castle gates. A young female knight approached them.

“You are the Knight-in-Training?”

“Yes. You are with the Church of Freya, are you not?”

The female knight replied to his question with another question. Although females could be knights, such an example was Da Xia, they were still rather rare to see. The female knight bowed her head in respect. Her long black bangs moved forwards and covered her brown eyes as she introduced herself.

“It is a pleasure make your acquaintance. My name is Verena.Alcott. I am a Knight-in-Training for the Kallamore Kingdom.”

Sun followed her example and bowed his head forward as well since it would be awkward for him if only she was doing.

“My name is Grisia Sun. This is Alena. We are both from the Church of Freya. I hope we get along during this mission.”

After they finished greeting each other, they left the castle and headed into town.
