Chapter 6: The Unending Future

Chapter 6: The Unending Future

Eon sat back with a sigh. It had been a long time since he had entered the tutorial. This meant that Eon had fought more times than he cared to count since he had started practicing bodily revelation. He barely scraped through most of them, dying several and undergoing the agony associated with resurrection, at least early on.

However, as time went on, and as Eon kept getting stronger and more skilled, Eon would never die the same way or make the same mistake twice. Every time that Eon fought, he would become a little faster, stronger, more agile, and a little more skilled.

Eon didn't feel tired, hungry, thirsty, or any kind of need while he was in the tutorial. It was a somewhat bizarre sensation considering how hard he had been working, though it had been so long that Eon could no longer make much sense of how much time had passed thanks to not having any meaningful interactions or calendars. It must have been a very long time, that was the only thing he knew for sure.

Eon realized something during this extended time, he had no idea when the tutorial would let him out. It gave him no indication of what Eon should be doing, other than fighting, practicing, and otherwise getting stronger. How much longer would he have to be here? He had no idea and was feeling desperation in this regard.

Eon had changed quite a lot since entering the tutorial. He entered as a somewhat doughy boy, but as time went on he was becoming quite muscular, at the same time his frame remained rather sleek due to his need for agility. Eon also hadn't aged a single day, though he barely noticed. If it wasn't for bodily revelation requiring absolute awareness of the body, he probably wouldn't have paid much attention to the changes or lack thereof.

Eon was in a half-crazy state from the isolation and repetitiveness of each day, meaning time and changes to himself had begun to blur in his mind. Eon would continue fighting, getting better, training bodily revelation, switching out weapons, and at some point forgoing weapons altogether. He had to start getting creative to keep himself entertained.

Eon started challenging himself during fights, such as defeating the opponents bare-handed, then with one arm, then with palm strikes, then one finger, then without moving his feet, then legs, and so on in various challenges.

Eon also used bodily revelation to create complex games to test his agility and control. This was the only way that he could keep himself from completely losing it from the boredom and loneliness he felt. This was also putting himself to the test and tempering himself. He hoped if he became strong enough, the tutorial would let him go, though as the days passed it gnawed away at him that it might be a vain hope.

Eon might not have fully realized it yet, but he had long surpassed what a human being could normally achieve, and this was most evident in the fact that the tutorial could no longer really challenge him. That is part of the reason that Eon had created challenges to keep himself occupied, as fighting had become boring and easy.

Eon had created his own unique style of combat, It was feral and brutal, lacking any of the markings of civilized martial arts. Eon preferred unarmed combat as it was the most challenging and versatile. He could defeat most monsters that the tutorial sent him now with a single finger, not even moving his body. These fights were short, vicious, and brutal, even towards himself.

Eon didn't particularly care if using a certain move hurt him, as it would soon be healed anyway and he could always block the sensation of pain with bodily revelation if he chose to. Though he often didn’t train his pain tolerance to help prevent boredom.

Eon had also mastered bodily revelation, or at least as much as he could. This was a big reason Eon became as strong as he is, surpassing normal human limitations. Unfortunately, Eon couldn't figure out how to create life sparks.

While Eon could sense his bloodline and life force, he couldn't control them like the manual said he should be able to when he began to sense them. Something was keeping them frozen in place, they couldn't move even though he could feel them. Eon chalked it up to outside interference, as he couldn't conceive as to why it wouldn't work otherwise.

One uneventful day, Eon had defeated a small group of flying dragon-like lizards while balancing on the tip of his nose, with his eyes closed, and both hands in his pockets. This proved to be a simple matter and Eon won without even receiving a scratch.

Eon stood up and went to push the button to skip the waiting period, as there was nothing to do but sit and wait around as he had finished mastering bodily revelation to the best of his ability.

As he tried to skip the wait; however, Eon noticed something was off. There was a loud noise, like the grating of steel plates. It was unpleasant and irritating, but for the first time in a long time, vigor entered Eon's eyes. Things were always the same in the tutorial, no matter how much time passed. This was the first time that something had happened without Eon prompting it to happen.

Eon felt his body being dragged back to a huge crack that had appeared from nowhere in the wall, behind which was a purple portal. Without any hesitation, Eon leaped into the portal. His thoughts were:

'Even if it kills me, it is probably better than being stuck here for eternity. So what's on the other side is irrelevant.'

As Eon leaped through the portal, he felt like his body was ripped apart, yet he could feel at the same time he was being stitched back together. Eon has immense pain tolerance, both from getting beat up constantly in the tutorial and as a natural result of cultivating bodily revelation.

Even still, this pain was beyond his capability to handle. Eon started using bodily revelation immediately and cut off the sensation of pain. Nothing “hurt” in the traditional sense of the word but he could see what parts of the body were in pain like he was reading it off a monitor, and all of Eon's body parts were going on a rampage. This feeling was almost identical to the feeling he had received upon entering the tutorial, which sent his mind trembling with joy and yearning for escape.

This was quite obviously some form of teleportation, and Eon was beyond ecstatic to see where this portal would take him. He was surrounded by a purple tunnel, which almost looked like a fabric blanket surrounding Eon, just out of his reach. not that he could move anyway, his body was under crushing pressure that made Eon’s strength look like an ant’s.

The surface of the tunnel was covered in what appeared to be quickly moving stars from the night sky, as well as purple electrical arcs slamming around the walls and into Eon's body, causing severe damage that was immediately repaired by the blue healing sparks from the tutorial. This entire process lasted quite some time, but Eon's sense of time still had not recovered so he wasn't sure how long it took before a sudden flash of white light blinded him.

Eon felt something that was barely a distant memory now. The breeze. Eon felt the wind on his face and the rest of his body. He was completely naked. The air was cool and crisp.

Eon opened his eyes and slowly sat up. There was a blank look on his face, and his mind was empty. He was in complete shock, unable to comprehend what was happening. Around him, there was a verdant green grass field half as tall as a man, and above that was a bright blue sky, the sun was shining brightly and merrily, surpassing Eon's memories of the sun. Truly, memories can’t compare to the real thing.

Eon instinctively clenched his hand, combing the soil between his fingers. A stupid grin slowly made its way onto Eon's face. He had made it out. He made it. Eon bolted up and started sprinting and screaming like a madman, enjoying the feeling of the cool air caressing his skin, the soil and sharp grass beneath his feet, and the sun beating down on his exposed muscular back.

There was nothing but joy as Eon experienced these things that he long ago would have found irritating. Eon was finally free. 'Free. Free! FREE! I'M FREE!'
