Chapter 28: The cave

The entrance to the Volcano Cave was an imposing sight — a gaping maw of jagged, obsidian stone, framed by tendrils of smoke and steam. The air around it shimmered with heat, making my skin prickle with anticipation. As I ventured further into the cave, the world outside faded away, replaced once more by the dimly lit, ominous beauty of the cavern. The cave's interior continued to captivate me, with stalactites dripping from the ceiling and stalagmites rising defiantly, the echoes of my footsteps still resonating hauntingly.

Occasional pockets of phosphorescent fungi painted luminescent strokes on the cave walls, guiding my way with a soft, eerie glow. As I delved deeper, I felt the temperature rising, signaling the molten fury that flowed beneath the cave's surface. The walls around me seemed to pulse with life, radiating warmth, while the sounds of bubbling and hissing hinted at the proximity of lava. After what felt like an eternity, the tunnel began to open up, revealing a vast cavern. Here, I was met with the astonishing spectacle of fire and water colliding. Pools of molten lava, glowing a fierce orange-red, bubbled and churned, occasionally erupting to release gouts of flame and thick plumes of sulfurous smoke. And yet, where this blazing liquid reached the cavern's edges, it was tempered by subterranean waters seeping in from hidden sources. The steam resulting from this union filled the cavern, casting everything in a hazy, dreamlike glow.

It was on this precipice, where two great forces met, that I found the Lava Lilies. Their beauty was breathtaking — petals of fiery orange, tinged with reds and yellows, as if crafted by the flames themselves. Their green stems thrived at the juncture of the molten lava and cooling waters, drawing life from both extremes. Approaching with caution due to the stifling heat, I noticed the Lava Lilies' delicate petals quivering, almost as if dancing, in the thick, heated air. Carefully, I began to harvest them, acutely aware of their rarity and value.

With the Lava Lilies safely in my possession, I paused for a moment, taking in the majestic sight around me — a testament to nature's power, where destruction met creation, and life persisted against all odds. This place, with its sublime wonders and elemental balance, left an indelible mark on my soul. The cave was a welcome respite that I surely needed. I hadn’t realized how on edge I had been until now. I hadn’t felt this calm in a while.

As I made my way back through the Volcano Cave, the significance of what I had discovered and the astonishing sights I had seen occupied every corner of my mind. But, as the exit drew closer, a new emotion began to take precedence — the impending task of handing over the quest to Elyria. A warmth, unexpected and novel, washed over me at the mere thought of meeting her again. Our prior encounters had always been strictly business, yet the idea of recounting my achievements and the marvels I'd witnessed to Elyria evoked a sense of excitement within me, deeper and more intimate than I had ever expected. It was an emotion I hadn't braced myself for, and with the cave entrance just within reach, I found myself pondering the possibilities that lay beyond the end of this quest.

The days that followed were relatively quiet. I battled a few more creatures, like the emberwolves and another Lesser Obsidian Golem. But to someone of my skill, they posed little threat. As I moved forward, my thoughts kept drifting back to the tournament. How many of my rivals would make it through their respective trials? Would they too be bound by the same level 10 restriction? I assumed as much, but one could never be too sure. The last thing I wanted was to enter the next set of duels with a handicap. These considerations, among other distractions, filled my mind as I neared the exit portal. Arriving at the portal felt almost mundane. I couldn't help but chuckle, thinking of the blacksmith twins, Soot and Spark. Meeting them had been the highlight of my journey, and I found myself hoping our paths would cross again. With a silent salute to the volcano and memories of the twins fresh in my mind, I leaped into the portal, ready to return to the arena, ready to confront adversaries who stood in my path.

Emerging from the portal, the familiar hum resonated through me, and the brilliant luminance of the Grand Coliseum greeted me. Its majestic pillars, which always stood as a symbol of magnificence, now felt like a known landmark. This was my battleground, and I was determined to emerge stronger and unmatched this time.

My boots met the polished stone floor of the Coliseum with a reassuring thud. The din of the crowd, a distant murmur, reached my ears, hinting at the excitement that lay ahead. Yet, even in this majestic setting, it was the sight of a familiar stout figure that drew my immediate attention. His sturdy frame, like a chiseled boulder, and the intricate braids of his long, gray beard marked him out as none other than Korrok, my mentor.

"Ah, Everett!" His deep voice rumbled like a rockslide, but the twinkle in his stone-gray eyes betrayed his genuine warmth. "I watched the highlights of your escapades, lad! You've certainly been busy."

A grin stretched across my face, partly from relief and partly from pride. "It wasn't exactly a walk in the park, Korrok. But it feels good to be back."

He studied me with those discerning eyes, then nodded, clearly impressed. "You've grown. Not just in strength but in character. I can see it."

Flattered by his praise, I felt a pang of curiosity about my own progression. "Korrok, I noticed the system capped me at level 10. Was it the same for everyone else?"

The rock dwarf chuckled, the sound echoing like pebbles in a canyon. "Worry not! All participants in the Grand Tournament are leveled out to ensure a fair fight. Every warrior here, no matter their previous feats, stands at level 10."

A sigh of relief escaped my lips. "That's good to know. I wouldn't want an unfair advantage, nor would I want to be at a disadvantage."

Korrok nodded in understanding. "And what of the Lava Lilies for Elyria's quest?"

I patted the pouch on my side, feeling the delicate petals within. "Secured and safe. They weren’t easy to obtain, but I managed."

His eyes sparkled with approval. "Elyria will be pleased. We should head to her shop right away. She's been anxious about those lilies. And after, we can head to the participant barracks. You'll want to rest and prepare."
