“What’s happening?”
I asked her, looking around nervously, shifting uncomfortably on my hooves.
She smiled knowingly and gave me a hard, yet joking, pat on the back.
“Let’s just say, life doesn’t always go where you expect it.”
The dragon huffed beside her, a long, drawn out sigh.
“Human. Was that an attempt at a pun?”
She turned and smiled widely, nodding eagerly, beaming in delight.
I glanced around, inching closer to the dragon, stating.
“No, I mean like... What’s going on?”
She turned back to me, her eyes still glowing, smile showing teeth.
“Mister Dragon and I have resolved our differences!”
Punctuating the end with a hard punch to the dragon's leg, who snapped down with his neck.
“Girl”
“Hihihi, sorry big guy, you’re just so tease-able”
“Girl, I care naught for childish behaviour. But refrain from doing me physical harm, even if it does nothing.”
“Say please”
“Say... What?”
“I won’t stop unless you tell me pretty pleease”
...
“Please.”
“Please what?”
...
“Please refrain from being an inbred, invalid, enormously stupid girl.”
“See, not that- HEY!”
I took an awkward step, in between them before the bickering turned weird.
There were more important things to talk about.
For example.
The lizard army to the left, standing in front of the walls.
And the rat army to the right, standing in the vast field of stepp.
“Can you two PLEASE tell me what’s happening? Am I dead?”
The two looked down on me, the human seeming annoyed, then like a flash of brilliance, her face brightened.
“Oooh yeah, sorry mister butler, forgot that they knocked you out.”
She turned to the dragon and asked.
“You wanna get him up to speed?”
The dragon shook his head, lifting one giant paw and using one claw to gently push the human.
Which made her tumble forward with a yelp as she wasn’t ready for it.
“You do... Pffff hahaha oh girl! How meager can you be?”
Thrusting herself up on all four, she turned around angry, staring daggers at the dragon's delighted face.
“You asshole! I want-“
“CAN YOU STOP!”
I screamed, feeling myself growing to a boiling point.
My emotions running wild, barely enough time to process them.
Scared, confused, happy.
It was a little overwhelming, and I really didn’t want to deal with them while also trying to figure out what’s happening while keeping them from fighting.
She turned quickly towards me, still on all four, her frown growing to an awkward attempt at a smile.
“Sorry… Mister dragon is better at magic than I am.. But because he’s such an asshole-“
“Please.”
“.. Yeah, sorry!”
She said, climbing back on her feet, taking a step up to the dragon and punching his leg.
Then leaning towards it, ignoring the dragon’s protest.
“So, ehm.. To make matters short, Mister dragon brought you back from life... I think? Then he shouted into the air, and then the two armies stopped. And now we are in the present.”
I glanced to my left and right, noting the two armies shuffling very awkwardly.
The rats pointing spears and bows at the dragon.
The lizards seemingly down on their knees, pointing their clubs at the rats.
Then I glanced back at her, asking.
“Why?”
She turned her head upwards, looking accusatory at him.
“This is why I wanted you to explain.. I dont know!”
The dragon bared his teeth in what looked like a wicked smile.
“Is it not obvious? They fear me!”
He shouted the last part, bringing his wings to their furthest width. Making the rats scuttle backwards in freight, the lizards bow lower than what looked possible.
Then the dragon started tilting dangerously and took two awkward steps to balance himself out.
The human falling flat on her butt as her support left.
I looked in shock and started to ask.
“What’s wrong- "
“NOTHING! By the dragons! Would you look at that slippery ground, HAHAHAHA DRAGON! You’re so clumsy”
The human screamed, scrambling up on her feet, turning in circles, shifting closer to the dragon.
Turning to me, she waved me in, making me walk closer to the now stable dragon, wings brought back in.
And as I got close, she waved me in even closer, making me lean in my head very close.
Then she whispered.
“Be quiet, mister dragon isn’t feeling alright, apparently he’s not as strong as he let on”
She said, the last part turning to a smug grin while looking up at the dragon who looked down on us clueless.
Or maybe he heard. His eyes seemed to widen somewhat.
Then the human spoke up again, still in a whisper.
“So, well. He can’t really do anything right now. But nobody knows that right now. So that’s why there's this standstill.”
I nodded, noticing a distant scream in the direction of the rats.
And at the corner of my eye, seeing something golden and huge moving towards us from the direction of the lizards.
I asked a simple question.
“What should we do?”
She took a step back. Apparently this part didn’t have to be secret.
“I hoped you would know.”
She said, as if it was obvious.
And I felt myself staring intently at her.
Slowly shifting my sights up to the dragon.
“Why don’t you have an idea?”
He met my eyes, staring just as intently, then simply saying.
“I would normally just kill everyone... But as this girl does not want that.. I have no clue- I mean, I do not care.
Then, in a whisper not even a mouse could hear.
“As long as she is all right”
I couldn’t hear, but the human seemed too, jumping like lightening at his leg, mumbling out an “aaaawe”
while scraping her face on his sharp scales.
I cringed inwardly at that, both from how painful it looked.
And the fact that once again.
I was met with an impossible problem.
Well, that doesn’t really matter.
I should be dead, shouldn’t I?
My last memory was of that fall, then nice dreams.
Then here.
Once again, I’ve been saved by her.
Let’s not fuck it up this time.
Do it for her.
